With Means To Bias Tool Away From Work Patents (Class 408/112)
  • Patent number: 9358016
Abstract: A measurement system and method for determining a depth of penetration of a working portion of a surgical instrument (e.g., a rotating drill bit in a bore). A first sensor outputs a first signal representative of a displacement of the leading edge of the drill bit in the bore. A second sensor outputs a second signal representative of a force applied to the leading edge of the drill bit. A processor outputs a third signal representative of the depth of penetration of the leading edge of the drill bit when the leading edge of the drill bit passes from a first medium having a first density to a second medium having a second density. The third signal is based on the first and second signals.

Abstract: A tool support for mounting a working tool on a pipe comprises a base having inverted V-shaped saddle portions engaging the pipe and a clamping chain extending between opposite sides of the base for clamping the base on a pipe. A first end of the chain is mounted on one side of the base by a biasing spring arrangement which provides for limited displacement of the end in the direction of tensioning of the chain, and the free end of the chain is adapted to be releasably interengaged with an adjusting mechanism on the opposite side of the base and by which the chain is tensioned to clamp the base against a pipe. A pipe drilling tool is removably mounted on the base and includes a handle by which the tool can be carried and supported during mounting on and dismounting from the base and by which the base and tool can be carried as a unit.

  • Patent number: 5993122
Abstract: A drill or machine tool attachment for use with a vacuum debris extraction system, comprising a bar to which a vacuum extraction nozzle is attached, and a tube slidably mounted on the bar and connected to a drill or machine tool. The nozzle is located on the bar ahead of the drill or machine tool, with the tube biased toward an extended position by at least one spring. The limit of the extended position is set by a locking plate. In use, as the apparatus is offered up to a workpiece to perform a drilling or machining operation, the nozzle makes initial contact with the surface of the workpiece and as the operator applies pressure to the assembly, the drill or machine tool and associated bit or tool moves slideably against the action of the spring thereby guiding the bit or tool through an aperture in the nozzle to contact the workpiece.

Abstract: An improved drill stand is provided which includes a stand column slidably connected to a bearer unit so that the position or height of the bearer unit with respect to the stand column may be adjusted. The bearer unit includes a gear segment which is biased toward the retracted position by a reset spring. The gear segment is meshed with a geared slide rod. The geared slide rod may be disposed parallel to or perpendicular to the stand column. The slide rod is connected to a machine receiving part. Rotation of the gear segment with respect to the bearer unit against the bias of the reset spring results in movement of the slide rod in the machine receiving part towards an extended position. The machine receiving part is also connected to a bit stop rail. The bit stop rail is connected to a bit stop. The position of the bit stop along the bit stop rail is also adjustable. Movement of the machine receiving part towards the extended position is limited by engagement of the bit stop with the bearer unit.

Abstract: The drill/countersink nosepiece assembly of the present invention permits the fabrication of a precise hole and countersink in a structural assembly workpiece in a single operation with the aid of a drill plate or other hole template. The small size of the nosepiece tip enables multiple holes to be closely spaced without interference between drill plate engagement slots. A close fit between the shaft of the rotating drill/countersink bit and the inner surface of the sleeve prevents the bit from wandering upon repeated or heavy use. The drill/countersink nosepiece comprises a combination drill/countersink bit to be received by a drill motor chuck, a bushing to be received by a fixed housing portion of the drill motor, a sleeve telescopically mounted within the bushing, a spring within the bushing to bias the sleeve forward, and fingers or other features at the end of the sleeve for engaging an alignment slot in a drill plate.
