Abstract: At a contact step in a tool radius adjusting method, a reference portion of a movable body provided radially movably on a housing of a boring tool and a position adjusting reference member fixed on a machine tool are brought into contact by sliding the movable body relative to the housing so that the position of a cutting blade comes to a predetermined position in a direction to go away from a rotational axis. Then, at an adjusting step, the position of the cutting blade relative to the rotational axis is adjusted by changing the relative position between a tool spindle holding the boring tool and the position adjusting reference member in a direction to come close to each other by drive mechanisms of the machine tool used for positioning a spindle head with the tool spindle relative to a workpiece in machining the workpiece with the cutting blade.

Abstract: An improved tool assembly for enhancing the surface of a heat transfer tube is provided. The tool assembly includes rods having cutting tips and positioned in rod guides which are slidably positioned in shafts provided in a tool holder. In an equilibrium state, the cutting tips do not extend from the tool holder. When a force is applied to the rod guides, the rod guides move in a first direction along the shafts in the tool holder, resulting in exposure of the cutting tips which enhance the tube surface. When the force is removed from the rod guides, the rod guides move along the shafts in a direction opposite the first direction to retract the cutting tips within the tool holder. In this way, the cutting tips are protected when not in use.

Abstract: The invention pertains to a deburring tool for deburring the interior and/or exterior of work pieces, for example, abutting edges on intersecting bores or on longitudinal and transverse grooves in bores or on transverse bores in a deep-hole bore with different diameters of an engine block, tubular work piece ends, edges on and in flat work piece surfaces or surfaces of a toothed wheel or a sprocket wheel. The deburring tool can be used in machine tools and is pressure-controlled. The cutting forces can be variably adapted to the burr dimensions that change during the machining process and to different materials. Corresponding embodiments of the deburring tool ensure the deburring of different work pieces with a good quality and in a short period of time. The inventive deburring tool is particularly advantageous in that it can be used in intermittent assembly lines with the latest manufacturing technologies.

Abstract: A tool for chip removing machining, including a basic body and two replaceable cutting inserts. Each insert includes a chip-removing main edge situated between a chip surface and a clearance surface, a first insert of which precedes a second insert during machining of a workpiece. The cutting inserts overlap each other in a zone defined by a borderline along which a surface generated by the main edge of the first cutting insert, with a time delay, is intersected by the main edge of the subsequent, second cutting insert. The main edge of the second cutting insert that afterwards intersects the already generated surface, is formed along a chip surface including primary and secondary sections, which have different shapes in cross-sections spaced-apart along the main edge in order to form a primary part edge and a secondary, reinforced part edge arranged to intersect the already generated surface.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for adjusting the position of a cutting tool. In one embodiment, a boring tool includes a coupling member which is driven by a CNC boring machine, and a sliding tool holder which is slidably coupled to the coupling member. A frictional force resists sliding movement of the cutting tool holder. The frictional force is sufficient to retain the position of the cutting tool during machining operations. However, the frictional force is insufficient to resist a lateral force applied parallel to the direction of sliding, as used during adjustment of the tool position. In another embodiment, either a surface of the sliding tool holder or a surface of a frictional member are contoured with a shape that corresponds to a desired contour of a sidewall of a hole. During machining, a follower in contact with the contoured surface causes the cutting tool holder to slide laterally during machining, thus contouring the sidewall of the hole.

Abstract: A magnetically levitated high-speed spindle assembly (20) is provided for forming non-circular holes (22) in workpieces (24) or non-circular surfaces on pins. The non-circular holes (22) can be formed with dimensionally varying axial trajectories at high speeds and with great accuracy. This is accomplished by supporting a rotating spindle (26) between first (58) and second (60) magnetic bearing clusters and independently controlling these bearing clusters (58, 60) to move a shaping tool (32) at the end of the spindle (26) in a predetermined orbital path (B). A multiple input-multiple output control strategy is used to control spindle (26) movements in the X and Y axes. The tilt angle between the cutting edge (34) of the shaping tool (32) and the orbital path (B) is maintained perpendicular under this multiple input-multiple output control of the magnetic bearing clusters (58, 60) to further improve shaping precision and spindle (26) stability during high-speed operations.
