Abstract: A mechanism and method for adjusting the position of a cutting insert relative to the body of a cutting tool is disclosed. The mechanism of the invention comprises a pair of flexible cantilevered walls each defining a wall of cutting insert pocket in the body of a boring bar. A boring bar of the invention comprises a bar body having at least one pocket for receiving a cutting insert and a position-adjusting mechanism including a pair of flexible cantilevered walls each defining a wall of the pocket. In the method of the invention, a boring bar is provided having a plurality of pockets each defined by a pair of cantilevered walls adapted to be flexed by a wedge mechanism. Next, a cutting insert is installed into each pocket. The position of the cutting edge of each cutting insert is then determined. In the last step of the method, the radially inwardmost insert is adjusted outward by using the wedge mechanism to flex the cantilevered walls.
Abstract: A tool holder for a machine tool is provided with a tool shank clamping mechanism in the form of an expanding or contracting sleeve, hydraulically actuated, and the chuck has an annular groove aft of an annular collar on the clamping mechanism. Circumferentially spaced conical screws, mounted axially in the collar, bear against the body of the tool chuck and allow fractional tilting of the clamping mechanism relative to the true holder and spindle axis to provide exact centering of the cutting end of the mounted tool.
Abstract: A tool has independently radially adjustable cutting edges. Adjusting drives are provided for each cutting edge. Each adjusting drive is laterally spaced from, and axially overlaps, an adjacent adjusting drive. Each adjusting drive comprises a servomotor which directly drives a screw. A screw nut is axially movable on the screw and is rigidly connected by means of a bridge with an adjusting piston arranged parallel thereto. The adjusting piston is axially movable and is connected by a bearing to a tubular connecting rod. Axial movement of the latter serves to radially adjust an associated cutting edge of the tool. The connecting rods of the adjusting drives are coaxially and telescopingly arranged.
Abstract: A boring device adapted for deep well drilling wherein a cutting plate is fixed in operative position in a recess of a boring head by means of a clamping bolt. The cutting plate is reversible and its position in the boring head is adapted to be adjusted in a substantially radial direction. The cutting plate has a serrated surface and the bottom of the recess has a matingly serrated surface which when contacting each other enhance the clamping action of the clamping bolt.
