  • Patent number: 7509720
Abstract: A continuous tool rotation tool turret is comprised of a turret head, a plurality of spindles and a motor. The spindles are attached to the turret head. Each spindle is adapted to secure and rotate a cutting tool. The motor simultaneously rotates each spindle. The spindles rotate at an operational speed while the turret head is being indexed. A bevel gear operationally connected to the motor simultaneously rotates a bevel gear attached to each spindle. Air pressure separates the turret head from its rest surface during indexing. The turret head rotates around a manifold which supplies coolant and pressurized air to the turret head. Optionally, a mating wedge and wedge receptacle attached to the turret head and its housing provide for more precise indexing of the turret head. The continuous tool rotation minimizes the time needed to index the turret from one position to another.

The bit holders are mounted at arcuately-spaced positions on a turret rotatable around an axis that is set at an angle to the axis of rotation of the drive shaft. The drive shaft is reciprocal between first and second axially-spaced locations at which, respectively, the drive shaft is engaged and disengaged from the bit holder at the position of use. The positioning of the drive shaft at the second location establishes a drive connection between the drive shaft and the turret so that subsequent operation of the drive shaft rotates the turret to interchange the positions of the bit holders at the position of use. The drive shaft is adapted to return to the first location and restore the drive connection with a new bit holder at the position of use after the turret has been rotated.

Abstract: A turret hand drill (10) features a turret (22) mounted on the drill for swivel motion about a pivot axis (5) angularly spaced from the tool drive axis (3) of the drill between a pair of opposite index positions. The turret (22) includes a pair of chuck assemblies (26A,26B) arranged symmetrically about and coplanar with the pivot axis (5) of the turret (22) for selective positioning in alignment with the drill tool drive axis (3), with the idle chuck assembly extending downward out of the way. A spring biased clutch mechanism (70) allows for disengagement of a chuck shaft (30) from a drive shaft (20) of the drill by pulling on the chuck (28) to switch between chuck assemblies (26A,26B). A frusto-conical ramp (90 or 94) is engaged by a chuck half (72) of the clutch mechanism as the turret is swiveled to gradually retract the chuck half (72) against the spring bias so that the chuck half is automatically urged into operative engagement with a drive half (74) of the clutch mechanism upon alignment therewith.

Abstract: A reconfigurable tool changer allows a tool cartridge to be easily attached to, or detached from, a standard machine-tool spindle head. The modular design, includes a revolving tool cartridge having a plurality of tool holders, a meshing gear for engaging a tool holder with the spindle of the machine tool, and an adapter block for positioning the revolving tool cartridge on any standard machine-tool spindle head. The adapter block allows the automatic tool changer to be easily coupled to a wide variety of commercial machine-tool spindles, making the invention a truly reconfigurable and portable tool changer. The revolving tool cartridge incorporates a novel three-dimensional cam structure mechanism, which allows tool indexing to be achieved by means of only one actuator.

Abstract: A self-aligning multi-tool for use in a punch press having a ram. The multi-tool includes a housing carrying a striker and a magazine bearing a plurality of circumferentially spaced tools and rotatable with respect to the housing so as to bring a single desired tool into alignment with the striker. The housing has a striking surface adapted to be engaged by the ram of a punch press and configured to rotationally lock to the ram when correctly rotationally aligned therewith to prevent the housing from rotating as the magazine is rotated. The housing is provided with at least one alignment pin having a tapered cam surface and positioned such that the ram will contact and cam against the tapered cam surface of the pin as the ram approaches the striking surface if the machine ram and the striking surface are rotationally mis-aligned so as to urge the housing to rotate into correct alignment with the ram to enable rotational locking therebetween.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a portable electric drill having a rotatable magazine containing multiple tool bits from which a single bit may be selected for use. The magazine is in the form of an approximate 120-degree segment of a cylinder with a plurality of open grooves for holding the various bits. The drill includes a Jacobs-type chuck assembly with a bore into which the selected bit is inserted for use. The magazine may be rotated to position any one of the magazine grooves into axial alignment with the bore of the chuck, so that the user may index the magazine to position a selected bit for expulsion from a particular magazine groove into the chuck. The chuck may then be tightened around the selected bit and the electric motor actuated to drive the bit. A cable assembly within the drill housing is operable with an exterior button to be movable between a stored position and a forward position to push a selected bit from a groove on the magazine into the chuck assembly.

Abstract: A rotating turret (10) having an outer plate (12) with several interchangeable tool (13) posts mounted to an index plate (22). The index plate (22) is mounted to a first axle (23) that extends through a block (24) and rotates on a set of bearings (28) mounted inside the block (24). The index plate (22) provides for rotation of the turret (10) between the several tool (13) positions. The pins (34, 37) are spring-biased toward the index plate (22) by springs (52, 55, and 58). A handle (16) attaches to a second axle (40) to provide a quick release mechanism. The second axle (40) mechanically engages with the pins (34, 37) and a sliding wedge (49) such that when the handle (16) is rotated the pins (34, 37) are retracted from the index plate (22) against the force of the springs (52, 55, 58).
