  • Patent number: 11358261
Abstract: Apparatus for use with a tool assembly in operations of tightening or loosening threaded fasteners about an axis are disclosed, and in one example includes: a lower clamp assembly; an upper clamp assembly; a reaction adaptor assembly; and a spring assembly formed between the upper clamp assembly and the reaction adaptor assembly. Advantageously an operator can tighten or loosen all fasteners without having to change the initial setup of the apparatus. The lower clamp assembly eliminates the need for extra operators and heavy and bulky equipment to hold the apparatus near the fasteners. The upper clamp allows the operator to rotate the apparatus around with ease. The spring assembly stabilizes and eases vertical height adjustment of the apparatus. The reaction adaptor substantially negates reaction turning forces of the tool assembly during the operations. Drive knobs provide easy alignment of and quick and safe mounting of the tool assembly on the fasteners.

  • Patent number: 7220084
Abstract: In order to facilitate and make more ergonomic the drilling of a multitude of holes in workpieces, particularly in the assembly of large scale components, such as an aircraft body, the power drill is docked to a support by an attachment which engages and locks onto a guide bushing or bore in the support. The attachment assures that the drill bit is precisely axially aligned with a hole to be drilled. The feed advance is performed by a leveraged action controlled by the operator. The leverage can be provided, for example by a Bowden pull cable. The attachment reduces the exertion to be made by the operator, thereby avoiding ergonomically unsatisfactory work positions.

  • Patent number: 7073989
Abstract: A bushing and associated drill are provided that may be actuated either pneumatically or with a spring in order to be biased into contact with a structure, such as a multi-layer structure, to reduce gaps therewithin. The bushing includes a housing and a nose piece slidably disposed relative to the housing. The bushing also includes a gas inlet in communication with the internal cavity such that the nose piece may be pneumatically urged forwardly relative to the housing and into operable contact with the structure. The bushing may also include a mounting mechanism for releasably attaching the housing to a drill motor. The mounting mechanism permits the housing to be detached from the drill motor to access the internal cavity, thereby permitting a spring to be inserted that will bias the nose piece forwardly relative to the housing.
