Tool Having Detachable Cutting Edge Patents (Class 408/713)
  • Patent number: 7147414
Abstract: A cutting tool insert having a specialized spur point geometry at the center of the insert. The insert comprises a spur point cutting portion and a blade cutting portion wherein the spur point provides stability by providing a spot and allowing a flexible workpiece to partially spring back when the spur breaks through. The spur point insert facilitates the cutting of relatively thinner workpieces and workpieces requiring the tool to have a longer reach to the hole, while minimizing the burr resulting from the drilling operation.

Abstract: An insert retention screw has a head with a radius that is a sufficient size to fit within a mounting hole of a cutting insert and seat within a seating plane within the mounting hole that is generally perpendicular to the axis of the insert when the screw is at an angle in a range of about 0–15 degrees. The retention screw is provided for holding a cutting insert in the pocket of a tool body. The pocket is partially defined by a floor and a seating surface. A threaded hole is at an angle that is taken with reference to the pocket floor. The insert has a mounting hole passing therethrough. The retention screw passes through the mounting hole and threads into the threaded hole so as to draw the insert against the seating surface.

  • Patent number: 7134816
Abstract: A cutting tool for rotary cutting includes a rotatable basic body and a replaceable cutting part or loose top, which is connectable to the basic body via a male/female coupling, which includes a groove and a male part. The groove is formed in a front end of the basic body and is delimited by a bottom surface and two side surfaces. The male part is insertable into the groove along the axis of rotation and protrudes rearwardly from the loose top. The male part has an end surface and two flank surfaces. In the front part of the basic body a forwardly open slot is formed, which separates two elastically deflectable legs wich clamp the male part in the groove. In either the end surface or the bottom surface a recess is formed for receiving a projection on the other surface. The recess is larger than the projection in order to enable the male part to reciprocate a short distance in the groove, whereby the loose top is self-centering with respect to the axis of rotation.

Abstract: A rotatable tool for chip removing machining includes a drill shank, and an exchangeable loose top mounted at an axially front end of the shank. Between these there is a coupling, which includes a male part on the loose top, and a groove in the basic body. By means of a slot, two deflectable legs are defined by the shank, which legs form a jaw for receiving and clamping the male part. The maximal width of the jaw upon deflection of the legs away from one another is larger than the maximal breadth of a wedge portion included in the male part. Furthermore, the angles of inclination of flank surfaces on the male part and side surfaces in the groove, are equally large in order to guarantee surface contact between said surfaces, when the legs are resiliently tightened against the male part. The wedge portion is of dovetail shape, wherein the loose top is drawn axially against the shank as it is being radially clamped by the legs.

Abstract: The invention relates to a chip removing tool comprising a tool shank which acts as a support for a perforated plate. The perforated plate is tensed by means of a screw connection passing through the orifice of the perforated plate and a through hole of the tool shank, containing a screw which is introduced from the side of the perforated plate, and a corresponding nut positioned beneath the tool shank inside the seat of the tool shank. The tensed perforated plate is adjusted in an effective manner in a direction of adjustment which is substantially radial in relation to the axis of rotation of the tool shank, whereby the contact surfaces between a) the screw head and the perforated plate and b) the head of the corresponding nut and the tool shank enable a pivotable movement of the screw connection following on from the adjustment movement, said screw connection consisting of a screw and a corresponding nut, as a result of crowning.

Abstract: In order to improve durability, machining stability, machining accuracy, etc. of a throwaway cutting tool in which a cutting head having a cutting edge is detachably mounted to the tip of a tool body using a clamping tool so that its function can be regenerated by replacing the cutting head, protrusions 8, 16 having their height gradually increasing and recesses 9, 15 having their depth gradually increasing from the center toward outer periphery of the tool are formed alternately with each other in a radial arrangement on the front surface of the tool body 2 and a support surface of the cutting head 3, which is formed by sintering, respectively. The protrusions and recesses, which are provided so that their positions correspond to each other, are conically engaged, thereby centering the cutting head and preventing its movement.

  • Patent number: 6616387
Abstract: An improved slot-drilling cutter has a tool body with plate seats at the end, which are arranged symmetrically in respect to each other. Cutting plates are arranged on the seats, whose cutting edges, as well as possibly cutting edges 41, 42, are set identically, i.e. which cover each other completely in the circumferential direction. Because of this, respectively two cutting edges are active for the drilling operation, as well as for the milling operation, which increases the metal cutting yield and allows the same advancement when drilling, as well as when milling. The slot-drilling cutter is free of lateral forces because of the symmetrical design, which permits a high degree of working precision in spite of large advancement moves.

Abstract: The invention relates to a solid drill bit for machine tools. Said first bit has a bit body (10) and two movable inserts (20,22) which are located a radial distance apart, each in an insert seat (16,18) of the bit body (10), in the area of a chip-conveying channel (12,14). The moveable inserts (20,22) have a rectangular or quadratic contour, project axially over the bit body (10) with their front-end main blades (30,34) and overlap each other radially in their working area. The radially outer movable insert (22) projects radially beyond the periphery of the bit body (10) with its outer tool corner (36) and with its adjoining secondary blade (38), which is perpendicular to the corresponding main blade (34). Starting from the tool corner (36), the longitudinal extension of the secondary blade (38) concerned is inclined in the direction of the bit body (10) at a defined setting angle of less than 3.2°.
