Tool Having Detachable Cutting Edge Patents (Class 408/713)
  • Patent number: 6224300
Abstract: A cutting insert shapes metallic workpieces by chipping. The cutting insert is especially suited for use in solid drills or double-bit cutters. It has at least one cutting edge which is delimited by a chipping face and a flank extends between two cutting corners. The cutting edge includes two sections which form an obtuse angle and in the area of a roof-shaped tip merge into each other. The chipping face has a raised shaped chipping element which extends from the inside of the chipping face as far as the cutting edge, from where it reaches beyond the roof-shaped tip partially across the two sections of the cutting edge. The cutting edge sections and the adjoining chipping faces include a step delimiting the shaped chipping element, the edges of which step serve as additional cutting edges of the shaped chipping element.

Abstract: A complex cutting-blade tool wherein a neck having a smaller diameter than the diameter of the drill thereof is connected to a shank. At the place where the drill and the neck are connected is provided a burr removal cutting blade inclined roughly 45° from the tool center axis. A hole entrance beveling cutting blade is also mounted through fixture to the neck, inclined at an angle of roughly 45° from the tool turning center axis, in a direction opposite to the burr removal cutting blade. The fixture can be secured at any position along the length of the neck, wherefore the distance between the burr removal cutting blade and the hole entrance cutting blade can be suitably adjusted so as to correspond to the depth of the machined hole (i.e. the thickness of the workpiece).

The inserts are positioned on the tool so that the cutting point of each insert is located in a different radial plane along the axis of the tool. The inserts are also positioned on the tool so that the radial distance of the cutting point of each insert from the axis of the tool is different. • Patent number: 6135681
Abstract: The present invention is a drilling system for cutting flat bottomed holes in work pieces. The tool has two opposing angled cutting edges extending from a rotational axis, with the inner portions of these cutting edges extending upwardly to create an overlapping web at the center. The overlapping web strengthens the center portion of the cuttings edges of the tool. The angle at which the inner portion of the cutting edge is inclined can be increased to create a center point on the cutting surface of the tool. The center point adds stability to the tool as it rotates along its longitudinal axis. The cutting edge has a rake surface with a positive rake angle that lessens the forces on the insert and also allows for better formation of chips of stock material being removed. Chip breakers can be cut into the cutting edges of the insert, further aiding in the removal of stock material.

  • Patent number: 5827019
Abstract: A self-calibrating countersink tool includes a reusable insert-holder with an axis-defining shank portion and an insert-receiving notch disposed at one end of the holder. The tool also includes at least one selectively attachable insert which is sized and shaped to be received within the insert-receiving notch of the holder. Each disposable insert includes a tapered cutting-edge portion and a notch-mating portion which is complementary in shape to the insert-receiving notch. When the insert is in mating engagement with the holder, the cutting-edge of the insert is disposed forwardly of the holder and defines an angle of between about 105 and 165 degrees relative to the holder axis. The countersink tool also includes an affixation means for affixing a disposable insert to the holder such that the insert is in mating engagement with the insert-receiving notch.

  • Patent number: 5820318
Abstract: A drilling tool for drilling in metals has in its front part cutting insert-carrying cartridges, for instance 3, 5 or 7 in number. The peripheral cartridge (6) carries a peripheral cutting insert (7). This peripheral cartridge is fastened in the drill by a locking screw (16) that extends in a slot (17) in the drillhead. Radially inside of the peripheral cartridge is a wedge (15) which can be displaced axially and thereby regulate the radial position of the peripheral cartridge and cutting insert and, thereby, the cutting diameter. When the desired radial adjustment has been attained, the peripheral cutting insert is fixed by the locking screw (16). In this way, a very exact adjustment of the cutting diameter is obtained.

  • Patent number: 5816754
Abstract: A metal cutting drill with replaceable cutting inserts and a length to diameter ratio of four to one or more. Two cutting inserts are positioned in exactly opposed diametric positions, and engage the workpiece in a substantially identical manner to precisely balance the radial forces resulting from drill axially advancing though a workpiece. Through the use of dual cutting inserts, the drill cuts the full circumference of a bore with each one-half revolution and therefore achieves the a faster axial feed rate. By virtue of the inserts being triangular, the curved corners on the cutting edges of the two inserts may be positioned relatively close together and yet sufficient space is left between the inserts to enable the drill shank between the inserts to be relatively thick and strong even at increased length to diameter ratios.

  • Patent number: 5800100
Abstract: The invention pertains to a drilling tool for drilling in solid metal. It comprises a base body with flutes for chip removal and two interchangeable inserts (1) designed especially as reset bits, having the same shape and size and being arranged in a recess at the end of a flute at the front of the base body. The inserts (1) are situated at different radial distances from the drilling tool axis (30) with overlapping work ranges. The blade (4,4a) of the insert (1) is formed by two cutting edges (10, 10a) and (14, 14a) which together form an obtuse point angle (18). The insert (1) is characterized by an extended form in its longitudinal direction L with channel-like troughing of its faces (3) running essentially in the longitudinal direction and by an arrangement of the blades (4,4a) at the channel ends. Furthermore, the channel has a base surface (9) which with its longer parallelogram sides (6,7) forms an acute angle (8) with the longitudinal axis (2) of the insert (1).

  • Patent number: 5791364
Abstract: An inflatable gas pipeline stopper is used for stopping gas flow through pipelines to permit repairs to be made to gas pipelines. For plastic gas pipelines, a tapping tee is attached to the plastic gas pipeline and a gas tight apparatus having a valve is attached to the tee. Thereafter, the plastic gas pipeline can be cut with a pipe cutter that is engaged with a hexagonal head and magnetic attachment to be operated from the exterior of the air tight apparatus. The pipe cutter can be removed from the air tight apparatus and the valve of the air tight apparatus closed to prevent gas from escaping from the pipeline. The inflatable gas pipeline stopper with dual air bags can then be inserted into the plastic gas main, through the air tight apparatus and the tee, to stop the flow of gas through the pipeline. After repairs on the pipeline are complete, the inflatable gas pipeline stopper can be removed, the tee can be stopped, and the air tight apparatus can be removed.
