Resilient Tool Or Tool-support Patents (Class 408/714)
  • Patent number: 4527537
Abstract: A diamond point type dressing tool with means for adjustment to dead center within a tolerance of .+-.0.0001" is mounted to a control head assembly capable of producing horizontal, rotary and vertical movements of the tool either independently or simultaneously to reproduce from a remotely disposed associated template any desired contour of angles and radii on the peripheral edge of a grinding wheel. A tracing rod, snugly but slidably journalled through a support ball, has a tracing end adapted for manual movement over the profile of the template and a control end operatively associated with the control head for reproducing the template profile in the movement of the dressing tool and for rotating the diamond point where necessary on the profile. The ball support is seated in the control head and is fixed against lateral or vertical movement but has the capablility of turning in place as the orientation of the axis of the rod is changed during movement over the profile.

  • Patent number: 4508476
Abstract: A boring tool is disclosed capable of positioning a tool element between a radial cutting position and a radial retracted position out of contact with the finished workpiece bore to avoid tool mark formation on the finished bore during tool withdrawal. The boring tool is simple and low cost in construction and includes a resilient tool-carrying member which extends transversely of the spindle axis in cantilever fashion for deflection by a spindle draw bar relative to a stop means on a fixed support member attachable to the spindle. During boring, the tool-carrying member is in deflecting engagement with the drawbar and, in conjunction with stop means, positions the tool thereon in a radial cutting position. For tool withdrawal, deflecting engagement is released so that the resiliency of the tool-carrying member positions the tool in a radial retracted position out of contact with the finished workpiece bore.

  • Patent number: 4498940
Abstract: A plate glass repair apparatus comprises a plate member that has an outer peripheral seal and can be held onto the surface of the plate glass to be repaired with vacuum generated from a self contained hand operated vacuum pump mounted on the plate. The plate is made so that the plate surface is forced down against the glass in locations sufficient to prevent the glass from being over stressed and for securely holding the tool in position. A cup like cutter for cutting a circular hole in the glass is positioned adjacent one corner of the plate and has a separate seal surrounding the cutter to form a chamber. Cutting fluid, such as water, is provided to flow from the outside of the cup like cutter toward the interior, where it is exhausted during the cutting operation. The cutter device for repairing plate glass is put into position over a break that is to be removed for plugging. Prior to cutting a backing plug is placed on the opposite face of the glass where the plug will be cut from the glass.

  • Patent number: 4497601
Abstract: A cutting tool has a body with an external screw threaded portion on which is mounted an internally screw threaded adjustment ring, a disc spring, a tapered collet having a frusto conical surface and a clamping member. The frusto conical surface is adapted to be engaged against a frusto conical recess in a tool holder having a bore therein in which said body is insertable. The body is adjustable axially of the tool holder by rotation of the ring and then clamped in position by the clamping member such as a bolt. A key engaged in a keyway prevents rotation of the body relative to the tool holder. The cutting tool is thus lockable relative to the tool holder firmly and accurately.

  • Patent number: 4443140
Abstract: The invention relates to a tool-holder for machine tools, particularly boring machines, of the type having a cylindrical body which is traversed by a slot shaped whereby that part of the body which supports the tool is displaceable resiliently relative to the remaining part of the body in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the body. Hydraulic means are provided for effecting the transverse displacement of the tool support part to adjust the position of the tool in a radial direction. According to the invention, these hydraulic means are arranged to exert a substantially uniform pressure to the outer surface of the body of the tool-holder.

  • Patent number: 4351207
Abstract: A micrometrically adjusted tool arm assembly for mounting on a spindle or a non-rotating support has a tool arm with a mount thereon for generally centrally supporting a tool bar. Only the end sections of the arm are secured to a base support and a slot system extends axially through the arm so that the central section can move radially relative to the ends of the arm. • Patent number: 4105360
Abstract: A boring tool assembly performs both the rough and finish cutting operations upon a metal work piece without power activation or manual adjustments of the tool units between the cutting strokes. The assembly includes a boring bar having a pair of fixed, diametrically opposed rough cut tool units, and a pair of retractable finish tool units diametrically opposed to each other also. The tool units are automatically operative in response to either the rough cut or the finish cut of the boring tool assembly. Spring biased plungers normally pivot the finish cutting units toward their cutting positions. During the initial or rough cutting operation, forces act upon the heel of the finish tools causing retraction from the cutting position. This is possible due to the cutting edge configuration and angle of orientation of the tools, the positioning of the tools on the trailing side of the boring bar centerline, and the direction of advancement of the boring bar.

A tool holding rod is axially slidably mounted in a cylindrical recess formed in the housing for rotation about its axis of elongation. Two opposing helical springs are disposed within the cylindrical recess and bias the tool holding rod towards an intermediate position within the cylindrical recess. During the feed-in of the machine chuck during a deburring operation, one of the helical springs can be compressed to permit the deburring tool to be retracted when the deburring tool engages an unfinished hole resulting from drill breakage to thereby prevent the deburring tool from being forced into the unfinished hole and thereby broken. During the deburring operation of a normally formed hole, the compression spring will permit the deburring tool to dwell at the opening of the hole for a better deburring operation.

A cap member, however, defines the limit of the extended position for the rod. The rod has an outside diameter somewhat smaller than the inside diameter of the cylindrical recess in the tool holder so that the rod may compensate for misalignment by pivoting relative to the housing within the cylindrical bore, utilizing the cap member as the fulcrum point for its pivot. The end surface of the piston coacts with the end surface of the tool holding rod so as to return the tool holding rod to a central aligned position when misalignment compensation is not required.
