  • Patent number: 4556346
Abstract: A drill press mounting apparatus for use on a balancing machine having a longitudinally extending machine bed is disclosed. The drill press assembly is comprised of a first longitudinally extending guide path defined adjacent the machine bed and a second longitudinally extending guide path defined adjacent the machine bed parallel to the first guide path. A drill press is mounted for movement along the first and second guide paths and a friction stop is operatively connected between the drill press and the machine bed. The friction stop retards movement of the drill press with respect to the machine bed upon commencement of drill press operations.

Abstract: A workpiece drilling machine includes to be moved to any of several drilling locations along the workpiece. A plurality of indexing detents is formed along the rail coinciding with each drilling location. A cam follower on the drill carriage is engageable with the detents to coarsely position the drill carriage. An index-cancelling device is associated with each detent and controllable by a preprogrammed input device to determine which of the detents is to be available for engagement by the cam follower. The programmed input device has a visual marking thereon corresponding to the information encoded therein and a visually perceptible status readout is controlled by the index-cancelling means to permit visual verification that the index-cancelling devices are arranged in accordance with the desired pattern.

  • Patent number: 4382728
Abstract: In a numerically controlled, gantry-type routing machine, a workpiece pressure-foot assembly is disposed crosswise over an elongate workpiece supporting bed for providing an effective hold-down force for stacked workpiece sheets. The hold-down force is applied to the workpiece stack at locations adjacent a router tool that is held and turned by a motor driven spindle assembly movably mounted on a gantry for orthogonally related lengthwise and crosswise movements with respect to the bed and workpiece. The pressure-foot assembly includes a pair of spaced parallel rails, pivotally supported about axes parallel to the rails, and a plurality of pressure-bearing rollers mounted on axes directly underlying each of the rails for supporting the rails, and accommodating travel of the assembly over the upper surface of the workpiece. The pair of rails and supporting rollers are arranged crosswise of the bed, paralleling the gantry, and underlying the spindle assembly.

  • Patent number: 4285619
Abstract: When machining surfaces of workpieces, which are not directly accessible for the working tool, for instance due to projecting flanges or inclined wall surfaces, a back-working tool is used, comprising a rotatable spindle carrying a cutter means. The workpiece is located upon a table with its accessible face turned downwards, the driving component of the machine is located below the table, and the spindle is made to extend through an opening in the working table and a passage in the workpiece, to present the cutter means at the, normally, non-accessible face of the workpiece. During operation the cutter means is brought to exert a downwardly directed pressure upon the workpiece, which is transferred to, and taken up by the working table.

  • Patent number: 4165948
Abstract: The invention relates to a machine for drilling and boring tubular plates, the workpiece-carrying elevator being embedded, weight compensation being provided by appropriate means, the machining units moving substantially at ground level opposite thrust tubes bearing on the plate before each machining cycle and absorbing tool thrusts. The machine is characterized by an elevator which supports the plate for machining and which moves on slideways with balancing by hydraulic rams in a constant proportion to the weight of the workpiece being machined. Thrust means retain the thrusts of the spindles, the movements of the latter spindles and means being synchronized by means, the tilting torque produced by the thrust of the spindles is limited by the provision at ground level of a closed framing which interconnects all the constituent elements. The invention is of use for drilling and boring any article, more particularly for the baffle plates of heat exchangers, boilers, water purifiers, heaters and the like.

A toolhead is mounted on the bottom end of the ram for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis at right angles with the crossrail and is pivoted to a desired angular position by a first drive shaft within the ram via bevel gearing. Rotatably mounted in the toolhead for rotation about an axis lying in a vertical plane is a toolholder which rigidly supports a drill and which is driven from a second drive shaft within the ram via bevel gearings. Preferably, the machine further comprises a rack-and-pinion mechanism driven from the second drive shaft for securely but releasably locking a turning tool at the bottom end of the ram, so that the machine can be used also for turning operation as a workpiece is rotated on a turntable. • Patent number: 4043700
Abstract: This invention comprises a control for moving a headstock longitudinally on a radial arm of a radial drilling machine and for moving the radial arm angularly about the axis of rotation, by moving the headstock a predetermined distance along an X--X axis and also moving said headstock a predetermined distance along a Y--Y axis at right angles to the X--X axis, for bringing the axis of the drill spindle on the headstock from one drilling position to another drilling position. One Servo motor moves the headstock on the X--X axis and another motor moves it on the Y--Y axis. The motors may be programmed to move said headstock automatically. When the headstock is moved on the radial arm along the Y--Y axis, angular movement of the radial arm is accompanied by movement of the headstock longitudinally of the radial arm. Thus, the movement of the headstock along X--X and Y--Y axes, also moves the radial arm angularly.
