Patent number: 4637761Abstract: An automated tool positioning system is disclosed. The system includes a plurality of work stations, each having a set of guide rails disposed along the length thereof. A single control device is provided and includes a set of guide rails adapted to be temporarily aligned with the guide rails of each work station. The control device is thus movable from work station to work station and operates with a novel tool support member which may be selectively positioned along any guide rail to support a cutting tool at a selected position on a particular work station. The tool support member includes arcuate bearing surfaces which permit the cutting tool to be rotated through a conical section having its vertex at the cutting point of the tool in response to the output of a workpiece surface detection circuit. In this manner, the cutting tool may be automatically and accurately positioned normal to the contoured surface of the workpiece.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1984Date of Patent: January 20, 1987Assignee: LTV Aerospace and Defense CompanyInventors: William J. Patent number: 4613262Abstract: The present invention provides a drilling apparatus (10) having a drilling member (20) that is rotatable about an axis (45) for drilling a bore in a workpiece (12). The drilling apparatus (10) includes a spindle (22) which drives the drilling member (20) and advances it towards and against the workpiece surface (32). The gimbal member (18) normalizes the drilling member (20) as the bore is drilled. The gimbal member (18) guides the drilling member (20) toward a drilling point (48) which is positioned on a datum plane (44) that is substantially tangent to the surface of the workpiece (32). As the bore is drilled, the guiding member (18) guides the drilling member (20) so that the drilling axis (45) remains substantially normal to the drilling point (48) at all times while the bore is drilled.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1984Date of Patent: September 23, 1986Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventor: Quentin T. Patent number: 4606684Abstract: A method for machining bodies of revolution with the use of a rotary cutting tool, characterized in that the angle of the cutting edge of the tool and the distance between the tool's axis of rotation and the base plane are selected so that the difference between the distances from the cutting edge points to the axis of the machine tool centers is equal to or greater than the amount of elastic deformation of the material being machined. The cutting edge points are found in a plane extending through the machine tool centers axis and the tool nose, on the opposite sides of the axis of rotation of the tool.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1983Date of Patent: August 19, 1986Assignee: Mogilevskoe Otdelenie Fiziko-Teknicheskogo InstitutaInventors: Gennady F. Patent number: 4589174Abstract: A polar coordinate apparatus for performing an operation on a three-dimensional workpiece. The apparatus comprises an arcuate track having a rigid carrier member slidably supported thereon, such carrier including a motor for selectively positioning the carrier along the arcuate track. A radial support arm is slidably connected to the carrier and is provided with a motor for controlling the position of the radial support arm with respect to the carrier. Further, a working implement, such as a milling device, is connected adjacent one end of the radial support arm so as to be capable of engaging a workpiece. Advantageously, the radial support arm may also be rotatable with respect to its point of connection to the carrier, and the working implement may be rotatable with respect to its point of connection to the radial support arm.A workpiece is supported on a rotatable turret plate, and a motor is provided for rotating the turret plate, together with the workpiece, about a substantially vertical axis.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 1984Date of Patent: May 20, 1986Assignee: Brigham Young UniversityInventor: Dell K. Patent number: 4559682Abstract: A swivel head swivels on its support along a plane face that is perpendicular to the axis of rotation. The face has the shape of a movable disk that slides on a stationary disk. The movable disk is rotated by means that ensure centering with a predetermined clearance. The stationary disk is pierced by two diametrically opposite bores and the movable disk is pierced by at least one pair of diametrically opposite bores with the same diameter and with the same distance between centers, and located at the same distance from the center, within the clearance. The positions of a pair of bores may be generated from those of another pair, by rotation of predetermined angle. The support features means for inserting, across the two disks, two expandable rings, for expanding them, and for retracting them.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 1982Date of Patent: December 24, 1985Assignee: Centre d'Etudes du FraisageInventor: Michel Sachot
