    Abstract: A captive panel fastener includes a head, a shank, internal threads, and external, longitudinally extending slots extending from near the head to near the shank's outer end. A washer is provided and the washer has inwardly extending prongs that fit into the longitudinally extending slots when the washer is slipped onto the fastener. The outer end of the shank, past the ends of the slots, has a thin walled portion which, after the washer is in place, is deformed with a forming tool so that the wall is pushed outward. The outwardly deformed end wall blocks the ends of the longitudinally extending slots, thereby holding the washer onto the fastener. The retaining washer captures the fastener on the panel or other surface through which the fastener has been extended. A small washer may be utilized between the outer ends of the slots and the deformed end walls to block the ends of the slots, thereby allowing the end walls to indirectly hold the larger retention washer.

    Abstract: The two bearing brackets (4, 5) of a small motor are clamped by means of stud screws (2, 3) against the respective end face of the motor casing (1). The stud screws (2, 3) extend axially by free bolt ends (21, 31) beyond one bearing bracket (5). Onto these free bolt ends (21, 31), a holding frame for the small motor is placed and is fixed against the bearing bracket (5) by means of a holding nut to be screwed onto the free bolt ends (21, 31). The screw heads (22, 23) provided at the stud screw ends are held positively in the one bearing bracket (4) to prevent their rotation with respect to the casing and onto the other, axially projecting free bolt end (21, 31) an attachment nut (23, 33) is screwed applying firmly against the other bearing bracket (5).

    Abstract: A fastener apparatus for joining together a plurality of plates, including an internally-threaded pin adapted to be guided through aligned openings in the plates and a generally cup-shaped accommodating element that can be tightened with the pin via a threaded bolt mounted centrally therein. The accommodating element carries one or more springs for yieldably resisting entry of the pin and further carries two locking washers accommodated on the threaded bolt, for preventing an unintended loosening of the pin out of its tightened position. The locking washer that faces the pin is rotatably guided and axially displacable up to an external stop of the accommodating element, and the locking washer that faces away from the pin is rotation-fast but guided in displacable fashion within the accommodating element, axially against yielding bias of the spring.

    Abstract: A captive fastener for securing two closure members together comprises a crew component adapted to be affixed to one of the closure members and a complimentary nut component adapted to be affixed to the other closure member. The screw component comprises a housing, a drive sleeve disposed within the housing for rotational movement therein, and a screw member in operatinal engagement with the drive sleeve whereby the screw member is axially movable between extended and retracted positions relative to the housing in response to the rotational movement of the drive sleeve. The nut component comprises a shell, a nut member disposed within the shell for limited axial and radial movement therein and fixed against rotation, and biasing means for urging against the axial movement of the nut member. The radial and axial movement of the nut member facilitates the alignment and engagement of the screw member with the nut member to eliminate binding when the closure members are assembled.

The said one fastener assemblage comprises a floating stud body carried by the panel and having an internally threaded bore which is adapted to receive the screw member when the stud body is applied thereto. The housing has ratchet rings encircling the screw member, provided with opposed faces containing sloped radial teeth which engage one another. One ring is keyed to rotate with the stud body, and the other is keyed for longitudinal non-rotary movement in the housing. A spring in the housing maintains the rings in contact.

    Abstract: This invention provides a captive fastener in which a nut is held to a workpiece by a retainer ring held in a two-piece grommet attached to the workpiece, the retainer ring being flat and split, with its grain perpendicular to a diameter bisecting the split, and its inner and outer edges having alternate elongated recesses to increase the effective ring width without increasing spring force. The stud assembly includes a cage secured to the other workpiece, with side flanges removably and floatingly retaining a housing in which is a stud and spring biased ratchet washer. The notched outer end of the housing is bent over the head of the stud to secure the stud. The ratchet washer has tabs fitting in the housing wall, and ratchet teeth to engage teeth on the end of the nut. A cover fits over the housing.

    Abstract: A captive panel fastener having an enlarged head and a threaded shank with a pair of slots extending longitudinally along the outer periphery of said shank through the threads thereon. A C-shaped ring is trapped in a grommet assembly and has a pair of inwardly extending ends riding in the slots. In this manner, when the grommet assembly is installed in an aperture, such as in the skin of an aircraft panel, the fastener can be pushed between positions whereby in a first position the grommet assembly and C-ring are at one end of the shank holding the head and shank outwardly from the aircraft panel and, in a second position, the C-ring rides along the slots and abuts against the head so that the remaining threaded shaft can extend through the aperture and a nut threaded thereon securing the fastener to the panel.

    Abstract: This invention provides a captive screw and a nut, the captive screw including a collar having an opening receiving the shank of a screw, the opening having a portion of wide diameter and a portion of narrow diameter. The screw has a full-depth thread at its outer end, and a truncated thread inwardly thereof, the truncated thread being dimensioned to pass through the narrow part of the opening in the collar while the full-depth thread cannot so that the screw is retained by the collar yet the end of the screw can be entirely retracted within the collar. The nut assembly includes a sleeve with an external shoulder, a straight knurl, and a flarable end, internally having a hexagonal portion in its bore. The nut has a hexagonal portion which extends into the sleeve and is smaller in lateral dimension than that of the opening to permit lateral floating movement, and longer axially than the hexagonal portion of the bore, to permit relative axial movement of the nut relative to the sleeve.

    Abstract: This invention provides a shear resistant panel fastener that includes a bolt having a head and a shank with a first relatively large diameter portion adjacent the head and a second smaller diameter threaded portion, a sleeve on the second portion of the shank, a collar around the sleeve and movable to a position around the first portion of the shank, the collar including a means for attachment to a workpiece, and a retainer means for prohibiting movement of the collar off of the sleeve in one direction. The smaller outer end of the shank is adapted to enter a clearance opening in a part for engagement with a floating nut at the opposite end of the opening, while the larger portion of the shank is drawn into the opening and the fastener is tightened. The smaller portion of the shank permits the fastener to be mated when the openings are misaligned while the larger portion of the shank provides shear resistance when the fastener is mated.

    Abstract: A device useful in retaining the position of a push rod associated with an engine during removal of a fuel pump is comprised of a hollowed machine bolt and a second bolt associated therewith by spring means. The hollowed bolt is comprised of a polygonal head, an externally threaded shaft extending from the inner face of the head, a cylindrical passageway within the shaft coaxially aligned with the center axis thereof, and a depression recessed into the outer face of the head. The second bolt has a small head and a thin shaft which penetrates the passageway and threadably engages a nut positioned within the recess. A coil spring is disposed about the thin shaft, the extremities of said spring being in abutment with the end of the shaft of the hollowed bolt and the small head of the second bolt.

    Abstract: A cylindrical bushing is positioned over the shank of a screw member prior to forming threads on the shank. After the threads are formed, the outside diameter of the threads is greater than the inside diameter of the bushing so that the bushing is held captive on the shank of the screw. A cylindrical sleeve is then inwardly deformed so as to be permanently secured to the bushing. The opposite end of the sleeve facing away from the head of the screw shank extends beyond the bushing and forms a skirt which can be peened over the peripheral inner edge of a panel opening to secure the sleeve to the panel, thereby holding the screw captive to the panel. The end of the bushing next to the underside of the screw head has an increased internal diameter portion for accommodating a spring serving to bias the head and shank away from the bushing so that when the screw is unfastened, it will pop outwardly and release quickly any member to be secured to the panel.

    Abstract: A quick-acting panel fastener assembly for joining a panel to a sub-structure is disclosed. The fastener assembly includes a sleeve bolt, a grommet assembly which is attached to the panel and a receptacle assembly which is attached to the sub-structure. The sleeve bolt passes through the grommet assembly and engages the receptacle assembly thereby joining the panel and the sub-structure. The grommet assembly includes a retainer ring which engages a groove in the sleeve bolt when it is in its withdrawn position so that the sleeve bolt is retained in the panel and remains in its withdrawn position when the panel is disengaged from the sub-structure.
