    Abstract: A locking nut (10) and washer (12) for use with a threaded bolt. The locking nut (10) has a tool engaging portion (14), a threaded aperture (20), and a washer engaging portion (18). The washer (12) has a locking nut engaging portion (28, 36) and an aperture (32). When the washer engaging portion (18) engages the locking nut engaging portion (28, 36), the threaded aperture (20) and the aperture (32) align to be at least substantially concentric so as to receive the threaded bolt. In this manner, when the tool engaging portion (14) is appropriately manipulated to force the locking nut (10) in a first direction along the threaded bolt, the engagement between the tool engaging portion (14) and the locking nut engaging portion (28, 36) also causes the washer (12) to move along the threaded bolt in the same direction.

    Abstract: A nut plate assembly includes a nut retainer and a bushing for expanding a tubular body of the retainer. The retainer assembly is used to cold work an opening of a workpiece in order to fix the nut retainer assembly relative to the workpiece. A nut member can be snapped into the retainer. A method of installation includes passing a mandrel through the bushing to radially expand the bushing into a tubular body of the retainer. The tubular body is compressed between the workpiece and bushing as the bushing is displaced radially causing corresponding radial displacement of the tubular body. The expanded bushing applies pressure to the tubular body for a desired fit between the nut retainer and workpiece.

    Abstract: A fastener includes an insert mounted in an oversized elongated aperture of a metal panel. The insert has a tubular body of lesser outside dimension than the aperture, and a hollow interior receiving a threaded stud projecting from the component. The tubular body has a flexible lip engaging the panel and first and second retaining fingers having first shoulders engaging the bottom surface of the panel and second shoulders engaging with opposed parallel extending sidewalls of the aperture to prevent rotation of the tubular body. First and second biasing fingers project from the tubular body to engage opposed curved end walls of the aperture to a bias the tubular body within the aperture as allowed by sliding of the second shoulders along the opposed parallel extending sidewalls. A plurality of ratchet fingers extends into the hollow interior to engage the stud when the stud is installed into the insert.

    Abstract: A piercing fastener is attachable to a panel without a hole by penetrating its surface. The fastener further includes means for attachment of a device to it so that the fastener acts as an intermediate component attaching the device to the panel. The fastener has either male or female attachment means and further includes an outside surface extending from a top end to a bottom end. Near the bottom end, a reinforcement collar includes an annular top surface for receiving a downward pressing force to install the fastener into the panel. A displacer and undercut are located immediately below the collar to effect and receive a cold flow of deformed panel material to secure the fastener to the panel. A plurality of axially extending circumferential teeth are located immediately below the undercut and comprise triangular knurls with sharp edges which penetrate the sheet as the fastener is applied. The bottom of the fastener terminates in a sharp circular cutting edge for penetrating the panel.

    Abstract: An inexpensive and reliable floating fastener is provided by manufacturing an integrated nutplate into the backside of the interior structural member. A retention clip engages the nutplate to capture the nut while allowing the nut to float. The integrated nutplate roughly aligns the floating nut to the axial through-hole in the structural member and provides the torque resistance required to drive the screw into the nut. The retention clip holds the nut in place and provides the axial resistance required for the lead chamfer of the screw to engage the nut and resist the axial loading on the screw during installation. The nutplate is designed to facilitate cost-effective manufacturing. The per hole cost of the integrated floating-fastener is approximately 30% of the cost of the industry standard riveted floating fastener.
