Abstract: A connector comprising an adapter having a threaded bore and a bushing having an external thread and an internal thread. The adapter has a stop on an outer surface to prevent rotation. The bushing is threaded into the adapter bore. A bolt is threaded into a bushing bore using the internal threads. As the bolt is turned the internal threads cause an interference fit between the bolt shank and the threads, temporarily preventing further insertion of the bolt. The bolt is then turned further causing the bushing to unscrew from the adapter toward the mounting surface until the bushing bears upon the mounting surface. The adapter engages with part thereby completely compensating for a gap between the part and a mounting surface. The adapter does not turn through engagement of the stop with an immoveable part. As the bolt is turned further, the sacrificial internal threads are stripped to allow the bolt to be fully torqued into a mounting surface hole.

Abstract: A bone member fastener for closing a craniotomy includes a cap and a base interconnected by a narrow cylindrical collar. The cap has an externally threaded stud that screws into an internally threaded bore of the collar, thereby allowing the cap and base to be brought into clamping engagement against the internal and external faces of a bone plate and surrounding bone. In a particularly disclosed embodiment, the base of the fastener is placed below a craniotomy hole with the collar projecting into the hole, and the stud of the cap is screwed into the bore of the base from above the hole to clamp a bone flap against the surrounding cranium. This device provides a method of quickly and securely replacing a bone cover into a craniotomy. The distance between the cap and base can be selected by how far the threaded stud of the cap is advanced into the internally threaded collar. The fastener is therefore adaptable for use in several regions of the skull having various thicknesses.

  • Patent number: 6302887
Abstract: A high strength fastener for bone fractures. This fastener consists of two members, a male and female. The male member has external machine screw threads that screw into matching internal threads in the female member at a predictable torque so that the force of fixation exerted upon the bone can be approximated by the installer. Because of the effective length of the threads, this fastener is easily adjusted to the proper length without cutting. Both members have a smooth shoulder region proximal to the heads and this shoulder region presents a low-stress bearing surface to each cortical wall. Each member has a head that fits rigidly into an installation tool providing for ease of insertion and fastening in the patient with minimal invasion and little periosteal stripping. Each head has a semi-spherical face that articulates with matching washers and plates, thus allowing the washer to assume the plane of the surrounding bone therefore distributing the load over a greater area.

Abstract: A bone plate fastener for closing a craniotomy includes a cap and a base interconnected by a narrow cylindrical collar.

Abstract: A plastic retainer assembly for joining components to the end of a cylindrical post comprises a retainer having a body with a shell extending therefrom. The shell has an axially extending center opening adapted to be closely received on the post. Gripping teeth are carried by the shell and are mounted for radial movement between a radial inner position for gripping the post and a radial outer non-gripping position. A lock ring is engaged about the shell and is slidable axially thereof from a first to a second position. The lock ring includes camming surfaces for driving the gripping teeth to their radial inner position as the lock ring moves from its first to its second position. A latch subassembly is provided for preventing movement of the lock ring from the second to the first position.

Abstract: A craniotomy pin is used to hold a flap of skull in place with respect to the surrounding skull after brain surgery. The pin is preferably an integral piece of biocompatible sterilizable material such as titanium or carbon fiber reinforced plastic. The head of the pin preferably comprises a first spherical segment having side reverse cut edges, and devoid of openings which can collect bacteria. The pin also includes a spherical segment locking portion, and a shaft connecting the head and locking portions. The shaft has a length less than the thickness of a human skull (e.g. about 3.5 mm or less). The locking portion preferably has sharp side edges and corners, and a sphere diameter and spherical extent less than that of the first spherical segment. The reverse cuts allow the head to be grasped with a tool and twisted when the shaft is in an elongated opening formed in the skull during brain surgery, so that the locking portion cuts into the skull and holds the skull flap to the surrounding skull.
