Patent number: 5143500Abstract: Disclosed is a fastener system comprising a male or stud element with a split or bifurcated head, forming two prongs, that fits inside a female or socket sleeve. Inside the socket sleeve is an internal annular ring of a smaller diameter. The stud prongs deflect radially inwardly when pushed into contact with the internal ring until the prongs pass the ring at which point they deflect radially outwardly and lock the male member within the sleeve. This locking action allows for a variety of items to be clamped together along the length of the rivet sleeve provided that at each end of the rivet there is a head of larger diameter than that of the sleeve. Each head can be replaced by any number of integrally molded items requiring a locking/mating action or where locking and rotation is desired.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1991Date of Patent: September 1, 1992Assignee: ITW PlastiglideInventors: Eric J. Patent number: 5018920Abstract: In this fastening system two or more layers of material are fastened together by inserting a hollow sleeved fastener such as a rivet or a bolt into the hole in a high interference fit to expand the hole radially. The sleeve is configured either as a collar and a straight shank or as an angled upper portion combined with a shank for counterbored applications. The intersections between either the collar and the shank or the angle portion and the staight shank are designed with an enlarged radius such that when the sleeve is expanded after the insertion of the fastener inside of it, this radius is expanded, which in turn stress coins the adjacent edge of the hole in the layers. This localized stress coining as well as the hoop stress in the hole surrounding the hole dramatically increases the fatigue strength of the fastened layers in a structure assembly.Type: GrantFiled: January 16, 1990Date of Patent: May 28, 1991Assignee: McDonnell Douglas CorporationInventor: Eugene R. Patent number: 5000637Abstract: A fastening device uses a ribbed rivet to secure two materials together. The ribs on the rivet should have a height no greater than 0.005 inches on most plastics and be of a close proximity. This rivet can be pushed directly into, or pulled directly out of, a ribbed receiving bore without fear of stripping the threaded ribs. The rivet can be manufactured in a two-piece injection plastic mold in which the rivet is fully formed in the lower half of the mold. Because of the height and proximity of the ribs, the rivet can be removed from the mold without stripping the threaded ribs. Furthermore, the rivet can be formed in the same injection molding operation used to manufacture the receiving bore into which it is to be inserted.Type: GrantFiled: July 18, 1990Date of Patent: March 19, 1991Assignee: Adams Mfg.Inventor: William E. Patent number: 4368937Abstract: The mechanism allows the bin to be manually moved from a stowed position to a loading position, and requires support arms which are mounted with self-aligning bearings for proper operation. The bearing has three parts: an interior bin mounted needle bearing axle unit; an exterior bin mounted nut; and an axle retainer unit in the arm. Installation and repair are accomplished from the interior of the bin by the turning of the bearing axle bolt which is threaded unto the arm, and upon disconnection from the arm is automatically gripped by a retainer washer for retention inside of the needle housing while the bin is in its loading position and momentarily arrested by a pin connecting both arms. Self-aligning and linear control is accomplished by the substantially wide needle bearing housing providing full support to the solidly mounted axle bolt.Type: GrantFiled: February 17, 1981Date of Patent: January 18, 1983Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventors: Mark A. Patent number: 4341053Abstract: A built-in connector element is constructed for being anchored in sandwich ype compound panels. For this purpose the connector element has a central threading for cooperation with further connector components and a body with corners forming anchoring fins for holding the connector element in the compound panel. The cornered body is arranged substantially concentrically relative to said threading and has a rounded flange merging into the anchoring fins. The anchoring fins are so dimensioned that the circle enclosing the outer corners of the fins has a diameter which is equal or larger than the diameter of the flange. In one embodiment the central threading is provided directly in the cornered body. In the other embodiment a threaded member is laterally displaceable in the hollow cornered body, whereby the initial insertion of a screw is made easier.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1980Date of Patent: July 27, 1982Assignee: Messerschmitt-Boelkow-Blohm Gesellschaft mit beschraenkter HaftungInventors: Karl Dettfurth, Bernd Dettfurth

Patent number: 4253509Abstract: A theft deterrent device for "bolting" pieces of material together, comprising:(1) a nut-like device having a smooth outer surface resistant to the effects of conventional wrenches,(2) a male threaded member having an internally threaded axial bore, adapted to threadedly engage the nut-like member,(3) a locking screw for threadedly engaging the internal bore of the male member, and having a head that mates with the smooth outer surface of the nut-like device, resulting in an essentially smooth, continuous outer surface resistant to removal using conventional wrenches, and(4) an environmental plug for inserting into the driving recess or bore of the screw to prevent foreign and corrosive matter from entering the recess. The locking screw threads are of opposite hand to that of the nut-like portion, so that the locking screw must first be removed before the nut may be removed.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 1979Date of Patent: March 3, 1981Inventor: James R.
