Abstract: An expandable fastener device for attaching tissue to bone and a surgical operating technique for using it. The fastener device includes a shaft which will pierce tissue and when rotated, will drill a hole in bone with a drill point to receive the fastener in bone. The device can be drilled in place and fixed in place by actuation of the device itself. The anchor porion of the fastener device remaining in the body when the shaft is sheared and removed, is made from a a bioabsorbable polymer material and an implantable grade titanium material or alloy thereof. The portion of the fastener that captures the body soft tissue (tendon or ligaments) is biodegradable and the portion anchored to the bone is the titanium material. Another embodiment constructs the component that captures the body soft tissue into a pedal-like integral disk where each pedal flexes to conform to the shape of the bone surface adjacent thereto.

  • Patent number: 5709513
Abstract: An improved mounting structure includes a soft mounting sleeve having a locking hole at a central position for fitting into a through hole of a mount, and a screw fitted with a washer. In assembly, the screw is inserted into the mounting sleeve fitted into the mount before driven into a frame structure. When the screw is driven into the top side of the mount, the bottom side of the mounting sleeve will elevate with the turning of the screw to impose a pressure on the screw threads, thus preventing the screw from being driven further and achieving a good mounting effect. This arrangement also prevents the screw from driving unduly deep into the frame structure due to excessive torsional force to prevent any possible damage to the frame structure or the screw threads.

  • Patent number: 5599147
Abstract: A blind rivet fastener which has a bulb forming collar that is assembled by sliding the collar down the shank of the fastener stem. The bulb collar is seated adjacent to the head of the stem. The stem has a shoulder and a pull portion that extend through the inner channel of a sleeve. The sleeve, shoulder and stem head are typically inserted into the matching holes of two workpieces. The sleeve has a head located at an accessible side of the workpieces and an opposite chamfered end located at an inaccessible "blind" side of the workpieces. The fastener is installed by holding the sleeve while pulling the shoulder through the sleeve channel. The stem head pushes the bulb collar, which engages the chamfered end of the sleeve. The bulb collar has an inwardly tapered end which bends the sleeve in a radially outward direction. The deformed end and sleeve head secure the sleeve to the workpieces.

  • Patent number: 5294223
Abstract: A fastener particularly suited to affixing metal to plastic parts, such as fastening electrical connectors to plastic circuit board mounting housings, includes a head and an elongate shank with an internally threaded through-bore. Located directly beneath the head is a shoulder which extends along the outside of the shank a distance equal to the total width of the parts to be joined. A mid-section of the shank is of reduced diameter, creating a thin-walled area of the shank compared with the areas at either end. A bottom part of the fastener includes internal threads, said bottom part beginning at the end of the thin-walled, mid-section of the shank. The through-bore includes a step down to a reduced diameter at the end of said mid-section. Therefore, when axially compressed, the fastener repeatedly bulges outwardly at its weakest point which lies just beyond the shoulder. The parts to be joined are thus trapped between the head and this radial bulge of the shank.

  • Patent number: 5135340
Abstract: A fastener for blind installation where only one side of a workpiece is accessible for installation of the fastener. The fastener utilizes two methods of deformation on its blind side. The fastener has a tubular body made of a ductile material with a head at one end. A separate expander nut is made of a harder material and adapted with internal screw threads. The expander is engaged by a threaded pulling mandrel attached which protrudes through the tubular fastener to be installed. The pulling mandrel engages the expander by means of the screw thread and pulls it onto the tubular sleeve which then fails in columnar buckling to form a substantial bulge and foot print on the blind side of the workpiece.

Abstract: A blind insert having a compressible plastic bushing having a flange at one end which merges into a first cylindrical portion and a second reduced diameter cylindrical portion at the other end. A metallic end cap is secured on the free end of the plastic bushing and is spaced from the first cylindrical portion and the dimension of the first and second cylindrical portions are selected so that as a screw is inserted into the fastener the first cylindrical portion will bulge outwardly and rearwardly to extend over the open end of the cap to forcefully center the cap to prevent tearing of the bushing.

  • Patent number: 5120175
Abstract: A fastener having an elongated shank formed of a shape memory alloy, a head at the upper end of the shank, and an annular segment at the lower end of said shank having a deformed cross-sectional shape suitable for insertion into an opening extending through adjacent workpieces. The annular segment has a frusto-conical trained shape that is larger than this opening. The annular segment radially flares from the deformed shape to an approximation of the trained shape when heated above a critical transformation temperature, thereby securing the fastener in place with respect to the workpieces. Alternatively, a sleeve made of a different material (e.g. aluminum) extending over a portion or the entire length of the fastener can be added for improved deformational characteristics, by providing the same frusto-conical shape through axial contraction of the shank.

  • Patent number: 5074726
Abstract: A blind fastener that is installed from one side only of a hole in a plate structure wherein the blind fastener has a tubular body with a head and a sleeve loosely journaled in the central bore of the tubular body. The sleeve has an upper portion that is retained within the central bore and a lower portion larger in diameter than the upper portion presenting a shoulder that abuttingly engages the annular end of the tubular body. The sleeve is retained in position on the fastener by tabs extending from the tubular body through slots in the lower portion and extend radially to limit the axial movement of the sleeve. The central bore of the sleeve is threaded to receive a fastening bolt as well as the draw rod that effects the upsetting of the fastener.

  • Patent number: 5056973
Abstract: A blind fastener comprises a fastener body, a stem and a shaped shear ring wire. The shear ring is disposed in an annular groove disposed intermediate the ends of a neck portion of the stem. When the fastener is installed, a bulbing portion of the shear ring upsets the tail end of the fastener and then shears at a predetermined load. An anchored portion of the shear ring travels through the fastener body, with an enlarged neck portion of the stem radially expanding the fastener to fill the hole within the workpieces being secured together. A lock ring groove is formed in the stem midsection of smaller diameter at the intersections of the stem neck and midsection.

  • Patent number: 5028186
Abstract: A plastic hollow wall anchor having folding arms for insertion within a limited diameter aperture in a substrate such as a wall. The arms, adjacent their overlapping attachment areas, are configured to provide a "sharp knife edge" intersection, whereby a spacing between the attached arms, during folding and aperture insertion, is substantially eliminated. The load bearing arms are concomitantly thickened and thereby strengthened within the limited dimension afforded by the aperture. Alternatively, the overall dimensions of the anchor are reduced, while maintaining the load bearing arm dimensions, thereby enabling the use of a smaller diameter for the insertion aperture without decrease in anchor holding strength.
