Patent number: 4451189Abstract: A blind fastener, producing a large blind side bulb, and including a locking ring to hold the fastener in a secured position against stresses. A collapsible barrel segment is disposed on the blind side between the end of the body portion and the head of the pull stem to effect the expansion of the body portion on the blind side. The barrel resists collapsing under loads sufficient to expand and flare the body portion of the fastener to produce the desired large bulb but collapses upon satisfactory flaring having been accomplished. The collapsible barrel, being collapsible along an angle, makes the fastener particularly well-adapted for fastening non-parallel surfaces.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 1981Date of Patent: May 29, 1984Assignee: Monogram Industries, Inc.Inventor: John D. Patent number: 4432679Abstract: A lock spindle blind fastener to be set with a single action tool where the fastener includes a pin or mandrel, a sleeve and a locking collar; the sleeve has an enlarged head which has a straight counterbore for the initial reception and guiding of the locking collar with the counterbore communicating with a bore portion having an entrant resistance angle for reception of the collar during setting. The entrant resistance angle is selected to be of a magnitude to provide hold-off of the locking collar. The strength of the mandrel and other characteristics of fastener components are related to the force required to deform the locking collar along the entrant resistance angle such that a high strength blind fastener is provided which can be set by a single action tool.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 1980Date of Patent: February 21, 1984Assignee: Huck Manufacturing CompanyInventors: Donald J. Patent number: 4408938Abstract: An expansion sleeve for attaching objects to a relatively thin panel comprises a hollow headed bolt threaded externally for its full length and threaded internally at an end portion remote from the head. The unthreaded internal portion of the bolt has an inwardly projecting apertured annular shoulder into which a drift pin may be driven to expand the sleeve on the interior side of a panel to which the sleeve is to be attached. A jamb nut pulls the expanded sleeve portion firmly against the inside of the panel member and thereafter a threaded rod is threaded into the interior threads of the sleeve so that a nut on the threaded rod may be tightened against the sleeve head. This draws the inner end of the sleeve toward the panel member to increase the pressure of the expanded sleeve portion against the panel. An object to be attached to the panel is then connected to the protruding end of the threaded rod.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1981Date of Patent: October 11, 1983Inventor: James V. Maguire

Patent number: 4397595Abstract: An anchoring retainer is provided for mounting at one side of a supporting structure such as a wall or ceiling having a through or restrictive opening therein through which the retainer is first inserted to reach one side of the structure or for mounting in a blind hole in a concrete floor or wall. Generally the same retainer may be used with a through opening or blind hole. The retainer, adapted to be used with a threaded element, comprises a flexible unitary one-piece body made from a plastic material. The body has an axis, is of generally triangular configuration and has at the apex thereof a sleeve provided with an opening surrounding the axis through which the threaded element extends. The sleeve has a pair of integrally formed outwardly diverging elongated flexible legs.Type: GrantFiled: May 15, 1980Date of Patent: August 9, 1983Assignee: Dry Dock Industries, Inc.Inventors: Jon D. Patent number: 4376604Abstract: A blind fastener particularly suited for mechanically joining composite structures such as graphite and fiber/epoxy matrix with a minimum of blind side damage. A first sleeve of highly ductile material is disposed as a liner about the portion of the nut which passes through the composite materials. The first sleeve extends longer than the thickness of the materials. A second sleeve of measurably less ductility is disposed between the first sleeve and the head of the threaded corebolt. The two sleeves have abutting surfaces which are non-sliding whereby as the nut and corebolt are threadily engaged and the two sleeves are brought into compression, the less ductile sleeve flairs the more ductile sleeve about the nut to create a protected area about the blind side of the materials.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1981Date of Patent: March 15, 1983Assignee: Monogram Industries, Inc.Inventors: John D. Patent number: 4340330Abstract: Disclosed is a straddling dowel, of plastic, having a continuous screw insertion hole and several expansion segments that are formed by longitudinal slits in the dowel body and which extend from the circular head portion to the circular foot portion of the dowel. In the latter part, a female thread can be cut by the inserted screw, thereby rendering axial expansion of the dowel body posible. The expansion segments are formed by overlapping annular plates or discs which, on spreading or axial expansion in the form of an increase in diameter or spreading move relative to each other over the whole extent of the contacting surfaces of adjacent plates or discs, which contacting surfaces run obliquely or conically to the axis of the dowel.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1980Date of Patent: July 20, 1982Assignee: Tox-Dubel-Werk Richard W. Patent number: 4306824Abstract: A blind rivet comprising a shank and a rivet body enclosing the shank, the rivet body containing in the cylindrical wall thereof wedge means and windows possessing spaces for admitting the wedge means such that, when the blind rivet is inserted through holes perforated in advance in the panels to be joined therewith and, subsequently, the shank is slid up the interior of the rivet body, the cylindrical wall of the rivet body is bent outwardly in the radial direction and, at the same time, the wedge means are raised and forced into the spaces of the windows, causing the cylindrical wall of the rivet body to be brought into tight contact with the edges of the holes in the panels and consequently enabling the blind rivet to be secured to the panels.Type: GrantFiled: March 1, 1979Date of Patent: December 22, 1981Assignee: Nifco Inc.Inventors: Toshie Tanaka, Kunio Hara

Patent number: 4293258Abstract: A self drilling, closed end, blind rivet has a hexagonally shaped flange, or other suitably shaped means of driving, at one end and a hardened drill bit at the other end, with the two being joined by an integral sleeve wall with a rolled groove in it that forms an internal chamber to retain the head of a mandrel. Withdrawal load on the mandrel, after the rivet has been inserted through a hole drilled by it in a plurality of layers to be joined, will upset the sleeve wall into a folded flange that coacts with the hex head, or other driving means, to tightly grip the outside face and the blind face of the layers being joined.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 1979Date of Patent: October 6, 1981Assignee: Microdot Inc.Inventor: Arthur J. Patent number: 4289060Abstract: An improved assembly for mounting a part onto a base member is provided by incorporating a tubular insert having a hollow inner core in a mounting hole in the part. A fastener, such as a bolt, machine screw or rivet, may then be inserted through the insert in the mounting hole for attachment to the base member. The tubular insert has an integral flange on the end which engages the fastener. The flange functions as the "washer" in conventional fastener assemblies. When the assembly is subjected to axial compression by the fastener, the insert collapses uniformly in an axial direction to absorb a substantial amount of the total compressive load exerted upon tightening the fastener.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1979Date of Patent: September 15, 1981Assignee: Hooker Chemicals & Plastics Corp.Inventor: John E. Emmett
