Patent number: 5207132Abstract: There is disclosed a torque transmitting or coupling arrangement for a fastener drive system or the like, wherein the respective externally configured and internally configured components are provided with a series of mating, elliptically curved flutes and lobes. In both the externally and internally configured components, the flutes and lobes are defined by a first series of elliptically curved surfaces which alternate with a second series of elliptically curved surfaces, with the respective surfaces merging smoothly and generally tangentially to define the alternating flutes and lobes on each said component. One of the components, either the externally configured or the internally configured component will preferably have the flutes and lobes thereon generated from ellipses of substantially equal dimension. The other component, of necessity, will have the flutes and lobes generated from ellipses of differing dimensions.Type: GrantFiled: October 16, 1991Date of Patent: May 4, 1993Assignee: Textron Inc.Inventors: David Goss, Richard Seidl

Patent number: 5144837Abstract: An acceleration detector including an acceleration transducer assembly including a piezoelectric element, an output terminal and an inertial weight. The transducer assembly is secured on a threaded bushing by a substantially ring-shaped, thread-engaging stop nut thread-engaging to the threaded bushing. The stop nut has an internal thread in its inner circumferential surface and a pair of axially extending engagement grooves formed in its outer circumferential surface at equal intervals for receiving a tool for rotating the stop nut about the bushing. The output terminal may have a ring-shaped portion, a connecting tab radially outwardly extending from the ring-shaped portion for an external connection, and a transition fillet provided at a transition area between the ring-shaped portion and the tab for moderating the concentration of stress on the transition area.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1990Date of Patent: September 8, 1992Assignee: Mitsubishi Denki K.K.Inventors: Satosi Komurasaki, Shoiti Katoh, Tomohumi Kinugasa

Patent number: 5137407Abstract: A threaded fastener having a recess or projection in a head for engagement with a jointing equipment is disclosed. The recess or projection is composed of a center portion and radial portions extending radially outward of circumference of the center portion. Each of the radial portions includes a pair of straight line section and a rounded corner to prevent stress concentration for providing substantial strength against press-molding and applied torque.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1990Date of Patent: August 11, 1992Assignees: OSG Corporation, Kozo YamamotoInventor: Kozo Yamamoto

Patent number: 5033501Abstract: A fire hydrant cap and actuating tool for use therewith provide enhanced security for fire hydrants and increased safety when using the tool. The cap is forged of 8620 carbon steel; is provided with an internal steel lock washer of cadmium plate steel, and includes thereon a forged, external slip ring of 8620 carbon steel with lubrication between the slip ring and cap. The tool which is used in combination with the cap includes a gripper which fits under the slip ring to prevent the tool from slipping, a spanner wrench and a hexagonal socket with a screw for gripping rounded-off valve stems.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 1990Date of Patent: July 23, 1991Assignee: Hydra-Shield Manufacturing, Inc.Inventor: Henry Stehling

Patent number: 5004361Abstract: Fastener comprises a flat head nut having a specially designed shape and includes a complimentary bolt, for use in a cryogenic environment. Opposed heads of the nut and bolt each have an underside connecting the heads to neck and body portions, respectively, which are of a conical shape and which fit into correspondingly tapered openings of two support members of a superconducting magnetic storage device. The shape of the fastener permits a predetermined contact pressure to be maintained for the support structure as the superconducting magnet is cooled to cryogenic temperatures. The fastener produces a rigid structure to eliminate frictional heating of the magnet. A specially designed tool is provided for torquing the nut and/or the bolt. At least the nut includes three tapered slots in its head portion, and tool having three correspondingly tapered fingers. In this manner, the nut can be sufficiently held, and yet the head of the nut remains flush with the surface of the support member.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 1989Date of Patent: April 2, 1991Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Philip D.
