    Abstract: A floating connection fastening system employs a semi-flexible floating bushing having a sleeve that may have an axial slot which captures a fastener having a head, an unthreaded shank portion and a threaded portion. The sleeve may have an outer primary surface and a plurality of protuberances that project outward from the outer primary surface. An offset cap mounts to the bushing/fastener assembly and receives a driver bit. The offset cap defines an offset clearance for installation of the fastener and bushing. The floating connection is installed by driving the fastener through a non-load bearing member so as to form a bore and threadably engage a load bearing member. The floating bushing has a flange which engages the surface of the non-load bearing member, and the sleeve is entirely received in the formed bore.

A screw or other threaded fastener is inserted through the cylindrical sleeve and pressed against the solid pin. Once the solid pin breaks away, the threads on the screw engage with the corresponding threads on the nut plate.

    Abstract: A temporary fastener that fastens two adjacent workpieces. The fastener includes a shank that extends through a hole of the workpieces. Extending from one end of the shank is a conical shaped head. The fastener also contains a pull stem which has a head located adjacent to the blind end of the shank. The stem head is pulled through the shank to expand and tightly fasten the shank to the workpieces. The fastener is removed by drilling through the head and the shank. The diameter of the conical shank head is smaller than the diameter of the drill so that part of the head does not become attached to the drill bit and scratch the workpiece. The conical shape of the head also reduces the volume of fastener material to further reduce the size and amount of chips produced during the drilling process. The tightly engaged shank prevents the fastener from rotating during the drilling operation.

    Abstract: A metal dowel for anchorage in a wall panel, said dowel being made from a folded blank of sheet metal and comprising a pair of flat leg members folded over at one end to lie flat against each other, the legs tapering toward the folded end to form a pointed end to the dowel and being held together at said folded end by a breakable web formed by the fold between said legs. The leg members are fixedly connected together at the opposite end to form a head end to the dowel and a threaded hole is formed out of and located between the legs adjacent the head end of the dowel with a funnel-shaped recess formed out of and located between said legs being axially aligned with said threaded hole and located between the threaded hole and the pointed end. After insertion of the dowel pointed end first into a panel, threading of a threaded member into the threaded hole with the tip thereof entering into said recess, breaks the web and forces the legs apart to anchor the dowel in the panel.

Due to this offset of the threads, the screw is positioned in the sleeve so that its threads are located between the external thread revolutions affording a new retention, while the external thread (24) seats within the thread previously formed in the wooden railroad tie by the screw.

    Abstract: A washer is positioned beneath a superimposed assembly of two or more flat thin objects (e.g. resin sheets) which is horizontally supported. A hollow joining pin is fitted about a metal pin supported vertically and coaxially with the washer. The joining pin has a head, a shank and a tapered end portion which is severable from the shank. The metal pin has a pointed end about which the tapered end portion of the joining pin is positioned. The metal pin is vertically movable with the joining pin, or independently of it. The metal pin and the joining pin are moved down to drive its pointed end and its tapered end portion, respectively, into the assembly to make a hole therein and force the shank through the hole until the shank is engaged with the washer, whereby the objects are secured together between the head of the joining pin and the washer. The metal pin is moved down through the joining pin to sever its tapered end portion from its shank. The objects, washer, and joining pin are all of the same material.

    Abstract: A hinge pin is temporarily held on a first hinge member on the automobile body by means of a hinge pin support mechanism. A door to be attached to the automobile body is held in position, and a second hinge member on the door is brought into engagement with the first hinge member. The hinge pin is pressed into the second hinge member through the first hinge member to couple the door to the automobile door. The hinge pin support mechanism includes a hinge pin retaining member including a ring separably joined to a plurality of legs. When the hinge pin is pressed into the hinge members, the ring is sheared off from the legs and rides in a peripheral groove defined in the hinge pin. The ring then engages one of the hinge members to prevent the hinge pin from being removed from the hinge members. The door can automatically be attached to the automobile body by a door attaching mechanism and detached from the automobile body by a door detaching mechanism.
