Abstract: A reusable pin and grommet fastener where the grommet includes a head, a shank, an axial bore extending through the head and shank and two legs flexibly hinged to a distal end of the shank and extending outwardly away from the shank with a slight taper toward the bore. The pin includes a shank with a tapered distal end and a plurality of grooves formed about the shank so that after initial insertion of the grommet within an aperture of an article the pin can be inserted within the bore of the grommet to lock the grommet in the aperture of the article and the legs of the grommet readily can flex outwardly with a slight insertion force until seated within a groove of the pin which retain the pin in the grommet with a substantial predetermined removal force that nevertheless enables removal of the pin without damaging either the pin or the grommet.

Abstract: A unitized expanding dowel is disclosed for accurately and repeatably locating a part having a through hole relative to a reference part having a hole of like size. The dowel includes a radially expandable, resiliently deformable cylindrical sleeve having an axial passage therethrough. A portion of the passage is frusto-conically shaped to complement a tapered expansion pin movable within the axial passage in a first axial direction to force the outer surface of the sleeve to radially expand into tight surface engagement with inner surfaces of the holes. Coupling means connect the sleeve to the expansion pin and permit movement of the pin in an opposite direction to allow contraction of the sleeve away from tight engagement with the holes while preventing withdrawal of the pin from the sleeve passage.

  • Patent number: 5286151
Abstract: A fastener mandrel has formed on one end a shoulder and a twisted, generally rectangular shaped head adjoining the shoulder. In setting the fastener in a workpiece, the shoulder enlarges the end of a tubular rivet and clamps workpieces together in combination with a preformed head on the other end of the rivet. The mandrel head deforms the rivet tail into a twisted appearing shape with a somewhat elliptical cross-section that partially encloses the mandrel head to provide good stem retention and prevent axial looseness. A plurality of axial ribs on the mandrel stem are drawn into a reduced diameter section of the rivet head end when the rivet is set, thereby providing additional stem retention and torsional interference.

  • Patent number: 4767248
Abstract: A fastener is provided for fastening together overlapping panels made from relatively soft materials, such as fiber reinforced composite materials, substantially without damage to the panels. The fastener comprises a generally tubular fastener body received within the openings of the panels. The fastener body has an enlarged body head for engaging the outer panel, an annular sidewall extending through the panel openings, and an endwall at the inner end of the fastener body. A plug having a tapered inner nose is positioned within the upper region of the fastener body in abutting contact with the body head and contiguous sidewall, and an annular sleeve is positioned within the lower region of the fastener body between the plug and endwall. During setting of the fastener, the sleeve deforms over the tapered nose and laterally expands the contiguous sidewall outwardly into a fully set condition in overlying contact with the outer surface of the inner panel.

  • Patent number: 4753405
Abstract: A support brace assembly for shelves such as shoe shelves has an integrated unitary structure comprising a truss with a lower leg having a support rib and a foot which rests stably against a wall. This leg is joined as by a gusset and a strut to an upper leg which has reinforcing ribs, with a front hook integral with the truss and for receiving a shelf rod so that the rod may be received within the hook bite with the bite gripping the rod. A rear resilient hook is integral with the upper leg and has a bite to receive another shelf rod flush against the bite. The upper leg has a foot which rests against the wall. The rear hook is spaced from the foot so that the passage between the tip of the rear hook and the foot is less than the thickness of the shelf rod received by the hook so that when the rod is moved through the passage, the rear hook expands to allow entry of the rod and snaps back to hold the rod in position. The foot of the upper leg has a wall anchor integral therewith.

Abstract: An expansion dowel is made up of an expansion sleeve and an expansion body with a radially outer conically shaped surface. To expand the sleeve, the expansion body is pulled into the leading end of the sleeve. The leading end of the sleeve is connected to the expansion body by two elongated webs. A bridge section on the end of each web forms the connection to the expansion body and the bridge section is breakable under expansion conditions. The expansion dowel can be formed from a single blank of sheet metal in a forming operation.

  • Patent number: 4653132
Abstract: The present invention relates to a plug-containing type internally threaded anchor to be set in concrete which is used to optionally and firmly fix hardware, such as ceiling members, floor members and wall members, to the surface of a concrete structure and it also relates to a method of producing the same which promises mass-production effect. The invention is characterized in that as a means for preventing the plug contained in the anchor body from accidentally slipping off owing to vibration, shock or other external forces exerted during transport or laying operation, the anchor body is formed with an internal thread by rolling whose internal diameter is smaller than the outer diameter of the plug, so that the crest portion of the internal thread bulging by a predetermined amount above the anchor body holds the plug in slip-off preventing condition.

  • Patent number: 4648766
Abstract: A protective/decorative liner panel is mounted on a sheet metal support panel by molded plastic fasteners which allow the liner panel to be subsequently detached and reattached. Each fastener comprises a pin which is initially joined to a hollow grommet by a frangible web which aligns the pin shank with a bore in the grommet. The pin head is manually and twistably engageable with an installation hole in the liner panel and then the grommet is axially engaged with an installation hole in the support panel as the liner panel is moved toward the support panel. A hammer blow on the pin head fractures the web, forces the pin shank into the bore and moves the liner panel to its mounted position relative to the support panel. Serrations on the pin shank frictionally engage the bore wall to hold the pin and its attached liner panel in mounted position.
