  • Patent number: 6385843
Abstract: The self-penetrating fastening device proposed consists of a rivet (3), acted on by a punch (13), and a die (15), the rivet consisting of a head (4) and a shank (6) with a central cavity (8) whose open end partly penetrates a metal sheet (1) in which it is held. At the end of the rivet shank (6) remote from the rivet head (4), the cavity (8) is essentially conical in shape, the angle of the aperture being &agr;. In addition, the transition zone between the rivet shaft (6) and the underneath (11) of the rivet head (4) is essentially rounded (R1). A rivet joint produced using this device is sufficiently strong to meet severe requirements, and the surface of the metal sheet in the region of the rivet is not affected by the perforation process.

  • Patent number: 6139237
Abstract: A metallic fastening member of a one piece configuration formed of a metal material includes a shaft and a flange extending outwards from a first end of the shaft. The shaft includes a relatively thin-walled portion to be caulked at a second end opposite to the first end. A female threading is formed at an inner peripheral face of the shaft excluding the portion to be caulked. An annular groove is formed at an outer peripheral face of the shaft or at the inner peripheral face of the portion to be caulked, so that the shaft has a partially thin wall. Since the wall of the shaft is thinner at the annular groove, the metallic fastening member can be fractured at that area so as to be separated into upper and lower pieces when detaching the metallic fastening member from a workpiece. Therefore, the metallic fastening member can be readily removed from the workpiece to facilitate the recovery work for recycling purposes.

The fastener thus effectively combines the functions of a conventional fastener and a conventional bearing into a single unitary device. The fastener preferably includes an annular thrust portion laminated with the lubricious bearing material and adapted for placement between the members. The stem head is pulled through the shank to expand and tightly fasten the shank to the workpieces. The fastener is removed by drilling through the head and the shank. The diameter of the conical shank head is smaller than the diameter of the drill so that part of the head does not become attached to the drill bit and scratch the workpiece. The conical shape of the head also reduces the volume of fastener material to further reduce the size and amount of chips produced during the drilling process. • Patent number: 5147167
Abstract: The disclosure relates to a grommet for relatively soft panels comprising male and female elements that mechanically interlock with one another. The male and female elements having complementary truncated conical surfaces that pinch and deflect a flanged portion of the skin of the panel into a complementary annular rib and groove thereby to fasten and minimize creep of the skin relative to the grommet. The male and female elements of the grommet are positively locked to one another by a relatively simple assembly operation.

  • Patent number: 5120175
Abstract: A fastener having an elongated shank formed of a shape memory alloy, a head at the upper end of the shank, and an annular segment at the lower end of said shank having a deformed cross-sectional shape suitable for insertion into an opening extending through adjacent workpieces. The annular segment has a frusto-conical trained shape that is larger than this opening. The annular segment radially flares from the deformed shape to an approximation of the trained shape when heated above a critical transformation temperature, thereby securing the fastener in place with respect to the workpieces. Alternatively, a sleeve made of a different material (e.g. aluminum) extending over a portion or the entire length of the fastener can be added for improved deformational characteristics, by providing the same frusto-conical shape through axial contraction of the shank.

  • Patent number: 5076149
Abstract: A piston assembly is disclosed having a wrist pin for pivotably attaching a connecting rod to a piston for use in an internal combustion engine. The wrist pin is formed from an elongated circular cylindrical body having a pair of deformable sections formed adjacent each end and a relatively hard middle section therebetween. The wrist pin is sized for insertion along a longitudinal axis defined by a pair of coaxially aligned, spaced apart bores formed in diametrically opposed portions of the piston. The deformable end sections are adapted to be deformed sufficiently to engage the bores of the piston to limit the axial movement therebetween. The relatively hard middle section spans between the bores in the piston for pivotably engaging one end of the connection rod.

Abstract: A blind riveting nut comprises a hollow shank portion and a setting head thereon at one end thereof. Towards the other end the shank portion has an internal screwthread for receiving the pulling mandrel of a blind rivet setting tool while at the end remote from the setting head, the shank portion has an element which closes off the interior of the shank portion at that end but which can be removed from its closure position. The closure element may be of various configurations including a ball and a portion of closure material fitted over the appropriate end of the shank portion.

Abstract: In interconnecting construction between a bolt and a mounting plate such as a shell of a brake booster is disclosed. A sealing, annular projection is formed in an end face of a bolt head so as to surround a bolt shank which is formed with a serration. Both the annular projection and the serration are caused to bite into the opposite surfaces of the mounting plate, whereby an excellent sealing effect and locking action against rotation are simultaneously achieved.

  • Patent number: 4929137
Abstract: A safety rivet arrangement for indicating the unauthorized opening of a housing whose wall parts are connected with each other at a separating joint which has a covered outer edge. A safety rivet extends through the connection and is considerably harder than the material of the housing wall parts. The rivet ends are arranged recessed, and the safety rivet is also only loosely peened-over so as to be rotatable. By reason of its high material hardness, and the rotatable arrangement, the rivet cannot be drilled out with some evidence of the drilling.

  • Patent number: 4909688
Abstract: An improved mounting part is designed for use in securing plastic panels to a metal framework. The mounting part comprises a base plate which is mechanically fastened to the framework by means of substantially oblong cups which are inserted into corresponding slots in the framework and then deformed into round; and a rectangular block for receiving a screw. The plastic panel is secured to the framework by means of a screw threaded fastener which is inserted through an opening in the panel and screwed into a guide hole drilled into the rectangular block and then into the framework. The improved fastener eliminates problems of rust initiation caused by the welded mounting part of the prior art, and acts as a combination of a stand-off washer and a nut.

Abstract: A bush for installation in easily crushed or marred work material such as apertured honeycomb sheet or fibre reinforced plastics material, enables the work material to be secured to a support, by means of a nut and bolt, without damage. The bush has a cylindrical body longer than the thickness of the work, and a flange for abutting a face of the work at one end of the body. The other end of the body has an annular boss which projects beyond the other face of the work, and, peripherally of the boss an annular skirt which during installation can be deformed to provide a retaining flange for engaging the other face of the work. A bolt can then be passed through the bush and a support, and secured with a nut. Only the bush directly engages the work.
