Patent number: 5689873Abstract: A temporary fastener that fastens two adjacent workpieces. The fastener includes a shank that extends through a hole of the workpieces. Extending from one end of the shank is a conical shaped head. The fastener also contains a pull stem which has a head located adjacent to the blind end of the shank. The stem head is pulled through the shank to expand and tightly fasten the shank to the workpieces. The fastener is removed by drilling through the head and the shank. The diameter of the conical shank head is smaller than the diameter of the drill so that part of the head does not become attached to the drill bit and scratch the workpiece. The conical shape of the head also reduces the volume of fastener material to further reduce the size and amount of chips produced during the drilling process. The tightly engaged shank prevents the fastener from rotating during the drilling operation.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1996Date of Patent: November 25, 1997Assignee: Allfast Fastening Systems, Inc.Inventor: Ralph Luhm

The stem 12 projects from the head 34 end of the body 14, and the head 18 of the stem 12 is substantially enclosed by a region 42 of the body 14 remote from the preformed head 34. The head 18 of the stem 12 abuts a shoulder 44 provided by a region 43 of the body 14 in which the diameter of the bore 36 is reduced and the wall is thickened. Axially spaced apart annular grooves 46, 48 in the external surface of the body 14 define between them a portion 50 which will collapse to form a blind head when the body 14 is compressed axially by pulling the stem 12 while supporting the preformed head 34. Finally, the stem head 18 may be pulled into the reduced diameter region 40 of the bore 36 and thereby cause the blind head to be reshaped and forced into compressive engagement with work being fastened.Type: GrantFiled: October 8, 1992Date of Patent: September 28, 1993Assignee: Avdel System LimitedInventors: Keith Denham, Laurence A. Patent number: 5141373Abstract: A pull-type blind fastener for installation in aligned bores in juxtaposed workpieces to be joined has a sleeve, a pin through the sleeve, and a barrel on the pin between a pin head and the sleeve. The pin is pulled into the sleeve by an installation tool to expand the sleeve and make an interference fit with the workpieces, the barrel forms a blind side retaining bulb on the sleeve, and a selectively annealed zone on the pin shank elongates to accommodate different workpiece thicknesses within a grip range of the fastener. The annealed zone remains exterior to the workpieces to preserve integrity of the interference fit. The installation force deforms a head on the sleeve into engagement with a stop shoulder on the pin to stop a pin break neck in flush breaking relationship with the head.Type: GrantFiled: August 15, 1990Date of Patent: August 25, 1992Inventor: James W. Patent number: 5137395Abstract: An apparatus comprising a sleeve insertable into a borehole, the borehole having a first diameter. A roof pin is inserted into the sleeve, the roof pin having a second outer diameter which is less than the first diameter. The outer surface has a peripheral dimension prior to insertion of the sleeve into the borehole. The inner or the outer surface contains at least one longitudinally extending yieldable channel portion which is of a lesser sleeve thickness than the remainder of the sleeve, permitting circumferential expansion of the sleeve. Expansion of the sleeve establishes a restraint between the roof pin and the borehole. When the sleeve is expanded within the borehole, continuous peripheral contact is made between the outer surface and the borehole.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1991Date of Patent: August 11, 1992Assignee: Ingersoll-Rand CompanyInventor: Clifford A. Patent number: RE39582Abstract: A temporary fastener that fastens two adjacent workpieces. The tightly engaged shank prevents the fastener from rotating during the drilling operation.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2002Date of Patent: April 24, 2007Assignee: Allfast Fastening Systems, Inc.Inventor: Ralph Luhm
