Abstract: A bolt, rivet or similar fastener for fastening separate structural parts has a shank, and a tubular cover member covering at least part of the periphery of the shank for preventing a stress from concentrating in part of the shank. The cover member is made of a material having greater deformability or greater elastic strain energy than the material constituting the shank or is made of a material having a relatively small coefficient of friction. When vibration or impact acts on the fastener, the cover member disperses the resulting stress to protect the shank against breakage.

Abstract: A technique for fastening together logs and a fastener therefor is directed to a self-drilling/tapping fastener which allows the fastener to be driven through the log to be secured without pre-drilling a bore. Counter-bore fins on the fastener head also form a counter-bore for the head. A lubricious coating applied to a portion of the shank accommodates settling of the logs and facilitates installation.

  • Patent number: 5295774
Abstract: A screw of the self-drilling and self-tapping kind intended to be used in fastening corrugated or similar cladding to a support structure is disclosed. The screw shank is provided with a feature, such as, for example, a circumferential series of axially extending ribs, which is operable to enlarge (such as, for example, by means of a reaming process) a hole formed through the cladding by means of the drilling tip of the screw. The hole enlarging feature is positioned at or adjacent to the junction defined between a threaded section of the shank and a non-threaded section which extends from the screw head. The hole enlarging feature is arranged so as to ensure that the aforementioned hole, as enlarged, has a diameter which is not less than that of the non-threaded section of the shank.

  • Patent number: 5221170
Abstract: This invention relates to threaded fasteners, an apparatus for making such threaded fasteners and methods of fastening parts. The tip of the shank of a threaded fastener has at least one thread coated with a lubricating or masking material to reduce the drive torque necessary for fastening as well as provide a protective coating for the fastener during subsequent processing operations. The drill tip of the disclosed self-drilling fasteners is coated with a lubricating material to reduce drive torque and to eliminate binding when drilling through fibrous material. The present invention also prevents the build-up of corrosion inhibiting materials on threaded fasteners attached to parts to be fastened together. A masking and/or insulating material is first applied to the threaded fasteners attached to the parts to substantially prevent applied corrosion inhibitor from adhering to the threads of the fastener.

  • Patent number: 5193958
Abstract: A method of making a screw threaded fastener (1, 10) for fixing cladding to a building includes the steps of applying a mastic covering (5, 15) to a screw threaded portion (4, 13) of the fastener, and applying a non-sticky protective coating (6, 16) to the outside of the mastic covering (5, 15) so as to prevent the fasteners (1, 10) from sticking together during handling and packaging of the same. Preferably the protective coating (6, 16) is as coating of a waxy substance and is applied to the outside of the mastic covering (5, 15) by means of a dipping or spraying process or operation. The fasteners are then easy to use and form a water-tight, moisture and vapor-proof seal with respect to their supports or substrates. The waxy coating (16) may also be applied to the drill point (12) so as to act as a lubricant during driving of the fastener.

Abstract: Fasteners and fastening devices made of metals, metal alloys, hard high strength ceramic material and the combination of same, are provided wherein all, a select portion or portions of the fasteners are coated with a thin layer or film of synthetic diamond material which is operable to enhance their strength and surface characteristics, insulating ability and resistance to heat and chemical corrosion attack. In one form, a machine screw is totally coated with a thin layer or film of synthetic diamond material. In another form, a select portion of the fastener is so coated. A thin coating of chromium or other suitable solid material is deposited on the outer surface of the diamond coating to protect same against physical attrition during its application and use. In another form, just the threads of machine screws and the like are diamond coated to protect same against corrosion.

Abstract: An anchor rod has an axially extending anchoring region including an axially extending expansion section widening in the direction the rod is inserted into a borehole in a structural component. The anchor rod is held in the borehole by a hardenable mortar compound. The mortar compound is prevented from adhering to the anchoring region. Since the mortar compound does not bond to the anchor rod, if there is relative movement between the anchor rod and the hardened mortar compound, the expansion section develops compressive force deviating from the rod axis and acting on the mortar compound, while the compound maintains composite action with the structural component, particularly in a fractured tension zone of the structural component.
