Abstract: A process for making self-threading screw fasteners wherein only the cutting portions of the tip of the fasteners are hardened. The unhardened portions of the fastener remain ductile and are not subject to hydrogen embrittlement during subsequent plating to improve corrosion resistance. The process preferably comprises applying a radiation curable plastic coating over the drill tip followed by plating of a thin (minimum 0.0005 inch, 0.013 mm) layer of copper. The cured coating is then removed leaving an unplated tip. The screw is then subjected to a hardening process, wherein only the portions of the screw without the copper layer are hardened. The screw may then be plated conventionally with a corrosion resistant metal. The invention is further directed to the product of the process. A second embodiment for making screws suitable for extreme corrosion resistance is also described.
Abstract: The composite stud is mainly a corrosion-resistant alloy, but is provided with a steel tip for flawless welding to a steel plate for use in a marine environment. The steel tip is friction-welded to the corrosion-resistant alloy before machining of the stud.
Abstract: The present invention relates to improvements in a self-bonding fastener and to a novel method of curing the bonding material during assembly line fabrication of sheet metal products. The fastener includes a headed self-threading screw member having its head undersurface formed with an annular axially extending lip. An upper portion of the screw thread is precoated with a thermo-setting adhesive which, when heated, will uniformly bond the fastener to a sheet metal plate. As the fastener is threaded through an undersized hole in a sheet metal member, such as an automobile body, the adhesive reliquifies and is stripped from the screw thread. The adhesive is then re-deposited uniformly to completely fill a closed chamber defined between the head undersurface and the opposed sheet metal surface sealed on its periphery by the annular lip which defines the axial dimension of the adhesive thickness.
Abstract: A composition for rust prevention of metals consisting essentially of (a) an organic silicon compound having an aminoalkyl group and at least one alkoxy group and (b) a compound having at least one oxirane ring. Said composition exhibits its effects particularly when applied on threaded metal elements.
Abstract: A bolt adapted for use in automated manufacturing line such as automotive vehicle assembly line, can be tightened from one side with a mechanical wrench (16). The bolt has a threaded portion (16) engageable with a nut (18), a pin-tail (18) gripped by the mechanical wrench, and a guide section between the threaded portion and the pin-tail. The guide section has a length (l) determined in relation to the thickness (L) of the nut. The length of the guide section is selected so that approximately the entire length of the pin-tail can protrude from the nut when the nut is preliminarily attached to the bolt with about one turn of rotation.

Abstract: A corrosion resistant angled head fastener is disclosed for use with at least two non-metallic panels. The panels defining a bore and a counterbore with the counterbore and a portion of the bore being in one panel and the bore extending through another panel. The fastener head has an end face with two angled sections. The first section extends forwardly of the face of the head and the second section extends forwardly of the first second. The included angle of the taper of the second section is between about 100.degree. and about 170.degree.. The head section is configured to fit into the counterbore of the panel.
Abstract: A threaded member made of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) obtained by the present invention which is characterized by having at least the threaded portion coated with a crosslinked nylon resin. Accordingly, the surface of the threaded portion is smooth, exhibiting adequate elasticity and fitness, and exhibiting excellent screwing ability to enable the smooth meshing of a nut with a bolt without jolting. Moreover, the threaded member is also excellent in weathering resistance and chemical resistance.
