Press Board Patents (Class 412/23)
  • Patent number: 8550760
Abstract: A device is provided to shape a spine of a book casing positioned horizontally spread out flat and oriented to be distributed evenly over a spine of a book block. Two fold-shaping rails are arranged extending in a direction parallel to one another. A movable, shaping tool is arranged to face the inside of the book casing spine to shape a web on the book casing spine with the aid of the two fold-shaping rails. The shaping tool includes two spaced-apart support bars that extend parallel to the fold-shaping rails and are arranged to be adjustable so that together they adjust the web width of the book casing spine in a direction transverse to the direction of extension of the fold-shaping rails.

  • Patent number: 8282330
Abstract: A press plate (8) with a cover (12) is moved upwardly from a standby position to a press position to press the cover against a book block (4) by first and second elevation units. The book block (4) is clamped by nip plates (9, 10), together with the cover (12). The height of each of first and second ends (X, Y) of the press plate (8) at the press position can be set separately by separately controlling the first and second elevation units by a control section (30).

  • Patent number: 7182567
Abstract: A method and device for additional pressing during a page nipping event in the adhesive binding of books or corresponding objects. One part of the cover (1) and the spine of the book are folded around the block (2) formed by the book's pages and glued on the spine of the block. The other part of the cover is folded into shape by means of a moveable jaw (8). The aforementioned folding of the cover (1) is accomplished by the aid of an additional compactor (9) acting by way of a stiffening brace (10) supporting the block (2). Alternatively, the process may be aided directly by the flexible support (7) by, for example, making a fold in the support (7) which causes it to function as a spring.

  • Patent number: 6669429
Abstract: Apparatus for manufacturing book-binding covers including a board-feeding-in system for feeding in cover boards and a back insert and a copy-feeding-in system for feeding in reference copies. A copy cylinder grips the reference copies, guides them past a glue-applying roll, and joins them to the cover boards and back insert. A tucking-in and pressing-on device folds the protruding reference-copy edges round the board edges and presses the book covers on. A feeding-out device delivers the book covers in stacks. The material flow of the book boards, back inserts, reference copies, and book covers is orientated in an ascending manner in relation to the horizontal surface on which the apparatus stands. The gain in height thus achieved compensates for the losses in height in the board magazine, in the tucking-in system, in the feeding-out device, and on the onward conveyers so that the laying-on of the cover boards takes place at virtually the same, ergonomic working height as the taking-off of the book covers.

  • Patent number: 6158940
Abstract: A device for the back rounding of book blocks in a book binding machine cooperating with a conveyor device. The device includes a driving arrangement and rounding elements driven in rotation by the driving arrangement. The rounding elements taking up the book block following release of the book block by the conveyor device. The rounding elements acting on both sides of the book block through pressurized rotational movement thereof. When the book blocks are gripped by the rounding elements, the rounding elements may selectively travel in a lifting movement which is separate from the rotational movement into preselectable, defined vertical positions.

  • Patent number: 6099225
Abstract: A low cost, high speed, high resolution laser printer method and apparatus for re-writable media is presented. A method for finishing of printed sheets into booklets is described. Novel mechanical operations permit the manufacture of a very low-cost, off-line booklet maker for use with desktop laser and ink jet printers. The technology can scale to medium-speed, in-line booklet manufacture. The method is novel because most of the finishing operations are performed on a sheet-by-sheet basis using precision paper positioning and a transverse tool carrier that cuts, scores, folds, punches, and staples the sheets. To form a finished saddle-stitched booklet, each sheet is cut to length determined by its sequence in the booklet and paper thickness, scored, punched (if required), folded, accumulated in a stack, and stapled. The sheet-wise method allows finishing operations to be done with low-cost tools and low actuation forces.

  • Patent number: 4975010
Abstract: In the manufacture of a book cover, a cover sheet is glued to cardboard panels and portions of the sheet are folded around edges of the panels. The glued unit is then passed through a press comprising pairs of press rolls spaced apart in the direction of travel of the glued unit. One roll of each pair contains circumferentially spaced recesses along its outer periphery. The recesses prevent the application of pressing forces to the unit when the recesses reach the unit, whereby an interrupted pressing action is achieved. Each pair of rolls is operated to apply pressing forces to regions of the cover not pressed by the other pair of rolls.
