  • Patent number: 7407355
Abstract: This invention relates to a method and a device for automatically binding book blocks by machine. In a working cycle, the book blocks are conveyed on a conveyor device in an upright manner through the individual processing stations. In a fanning gluing binding station (2), adhesive is applied from underneath against the fanned book block spine. In a spine-taping station (3) the spine-taping material is directly pulled off a roll and is automatically cut to the predetermined measure by machine. The headband is likewise pulled off a roll, cut to the required dimensions, advanced to the book block by means of a slide and is ironed onto the book spine. Afterwards, the end paper of the book block provided with the headband is opened in order to attach the book cover to the book block, is pulled from the book block by suction, and is clamped in a lower station press. With the end paper opened, the book block is then placed in a covering station (5), and the book block is fixed to the book cover.

  • Publication number: 20010012479
Abstract: A punch unit, in particular for making a punch for the binding comb of a ring binding is set-up of a circular shaped blade 1 and a counter die 19. The circular blade 1 is rotatably beard concerning an axis of rotation 27. At the circumference of the blade 1 cutting elements 2 are arranged. This cutting elements 2 raise over a fictive rolling circle 21. The surface of the counter die 19 is arranged perpendicular at the distance of the rolling circle radius rW to the axis of rotation 27 of the circular blade 1 and show one or several opening in which in each case intervenes at least one cutting element 2 of the circular blade 1.

  • Patent number: 6174120
Abstract: An apparatus and method for affixing book pages to a book cover is disclosed having a sheet of paper with at least one waxy side and two stickers, each having a first side, the first side being sticky and removably affixed to the waxy side of the sheet of paper. In the preferred embodiment, the two stickers are separated by a distance to accommodate the thickness of pages of a book. The apparatus also has a means for easy removal of the stickers from said sheet and is preferably done by having the sheet of paper extending beyond each of the stickers to allow for easy separation of the stickers from the sheet of paper. The stickers may be attached to the book pages by a variety of means such as staples, channel binding, or otherwise.

  • Patent number: 6158940
Abstract: A device for the back rounding of book blocks in a book binding machine cooperating with a conveyor device. The device includes a driving arrangement and rounding elements driven in rotation by the driving arrangement. The rounding elements taking up the book block following release of the book block by the conveyor device. The rounding elements acting on both sides of the book block through pressurized rotational movement thereof. When the book blocks are gripped by the rounding elements, the rounding elements may selectively travel in a lifting movement which is separate from the rotational movement into preselectable, defined vertical positions.

  • Patent number: 6099224
Abstract: A paper supplying apparatus has a rotatable member around a horizontal axis, a pair of clamp plates supported by this rotatable member mutually parallel and in face-to-face relationship for clamping a book block in between, and guide plates each attached to an associated one of these clamp plates, extending downward from the clamp plates to a lower edge part of the book block when the book block is held vertically. Such a paper supplying apparatus can be removably connected to a book binding machine by attaching a guide rail to an outer wall of the book binding machine and a runner to the paper supplying apparatus. The runner is slidably engageable with the guide rail, allowing the paper supplying apparatus to move along the guide rail selectably towards or away from the book binding machine.

  • Patent number: 6099225
Abstract: A low cost, high speed, high resolution laser printer method and apparatus for re-writable media is presented. A method for finishing of printed sheets into booklets is described. Novel mechanical operations permit the manufacture of a very low-cost, off-line booklet maker for use with desktop laser and ink jet printers. The technology can scale to medium-speed, in-line booklet manufacture. The method is novel because most of the finishing operations are performed on a sheet-by-sheet basis using precision paper positioning and a transverse tool carrier that cuts, scores, folds, punches, and staples the sheets. To form a finished saddle-stitched booklet, each sheet is cut to length determined by its sequence in the booklet and paper thickness, scored, punched (if required), folded, accumulated in a stack, and stapled. The sheet-wise method allows finishing operations to be done with low-cost tools and low actuation forces.

  • Patent number: 5570985
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for manufacturing booklets. Each booklet is made of a cover having two cover sheets and a spine, a bead of glue attached to the inside of the spine, and a sheaf of papers inserted between the cover sheets and attached to the spine by the bead of glue. The apparatus and method include moving the sheaf of papers to a first position by a first transporter, moving one of several covers stored in a cassette to a second position by a second transporter, and moving the sheaf of papers and cover into contact so that the sheaf of papers is enclosed by the covers and a side edge of the sheaf contacts the bead of glue. The assembled booklet moves past a device for activating the bead of glue. A method is provided for filling the cassette, which stores and dispenses the covers, and a method and apparatus are provided for jogging up the sheaf of papers.

  • Patent number: 5498112
Abstract: The application of protective jackets comprised of paper to a book is facilitated by minimizing bending stresses in the jacket paper in the fold areas where the jacket is wrapped around the opposed longitudinal edges of the book cover in the course of defining jacket retention flaps. The stresses are relieved by the metered, uniform moistening of the fold areas of the jacket to thereby diminish the flexual strength of the paper fibers in these areas.

  • Patent number: 4373844
Abstract: This is a machine which assists the operator in assembling paper dust jackets around the hard covers of a new book. The machine includes the plurality of vacuum suction cups mounted on a pair of oscillating transferring arms which transport the paper jacket from a supply stack to position the jacket on the back of a hard cover book while the book is being held in a positioning jig which also supports the covers in substantially horizontal position to receive the jacket from the vacuum cup and transfer arm assembly. The transfer arms are mounted on an oscillating shaft which is actuated by the positive air discharge from a compressor. A vacuum pump provides the vacuum for the suction cups. The chain and sprocket drive rotates the transfer arms and the suction cups from the plane of the pickup position to the plane defined by the book covers in the positioning jig during the transfer movement of the arms through their predetermined arc.
