Patent number: 7326019Abstract: A method for binding a sheet stack into a binder comprises a binder spine having an adhesive strip present on its inner side. The sheet stack is inserted into the binder in such a way that the stack's end face comes into contact with the adhesive strip. Thereafter the sheet stack is compressed by means of a pressing device, fanning out the end face of the sheet stack. And thereafter, in that state, an adhesive bond is created between the binder spine and sheet stack. Upon compression of the sheet stack, the pressing device exerts a linear pressure either directly onto the sheet stack or from outside onto the binder. The invention furthermore includes a binding apparatus to implement the method and a binder.Type: GrantFiled: May 11, 2004Date of Patent: February 5, 2008Assignee: Monolith GmbH BurosystemeInventor: Bernd Loibl

Patent number: 6210092Abstract: A punch and binding machine including a punching mechanism and a binding mechanism for punching and binding a stack of sheets by spreading the curled fingers of an elastic binder. The binding mechanism has a longitudinal extension in parallel to the edge of the sheets and a binding handle. The punching handle for operating the punching system has the binding handle mounted to it so the binding handle can be rotated with respect to the punching handle. The binding mechanism may be a separate unit unattached to the punching mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1998Date of Patent: April 3, 2001Inventor: Friedrich von Rohrscheidt

Patent number: 6042318Abstract: A microwave binder is used in conjunction with paper tape which is coated with one or more formulations of encapsulated, fast setting, water soluble adhesives to bind pages of a book. The tape spine adhesive is of sufficient thickness to allow it to penetrate into the edges of the pages of the bound edge. The microwave heating causes the capsules to rupture, releasing the adhesives to flow into the bound edge of the book.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 1997Date of Patent: March 28, 2000Assignee: Xerox CorporationInventor: John L. Patent number: 6024525Abstract: The present invention relates to a tape heating apparatus in which both side portions of a bind tape can positively be adhered to front and rear surfaces of a sheet bundle without creating any swollen portions. When a thickness of the sheet bundle is smaller than a predetermined value, side heaters perform a first heating/pressurizing operation at a position in the vicinity of a bound edge of the sheet bundle and then performs a second heating/pressurizing operation at a position spaced apart from the bound edge of the sheet bundle by a predetermined distance. In the first heating/pressurizing operation, portions of a thick hot melt adhesive layer existing on the front and rear surfaces of the sheet bundle are melted to be flattened, to thereby eliminate swollen portions. In the second heating/pressurizing operation, thin hot melt adhesive layers are melted, to thereby positively adhere both width-wise side portions of the bind tape to the front and rear surfaces of the sheet bundle.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1997Date of Patent: February 15, 2000Assignee: Canon Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Yuji Yamanaka

Patent number: 5931624Abstract: A paper processing apparatus that can efficiently bind a cover and a set of sheets and does not reduce the productivity of the copying process in the previous step. The paper processing apparatus includes a binding unit, a packet collating chamber and conveyance rollers. The rotational shaft of a conveyance roller has a spiral-shaped blade member that encircles said rotational shaft and has a heater inside. The packet is supplied from the packet collating chamber to the binding unit where it is carried in a particular direction as the conveyance rollers rotate. During this conveyance, the adhesive substance that is applied to the cover in advance melts and the packet becomes bound.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1997Date of Patent: August 3, 1999Assignee: Minolta Co., Ltd.Inventor: Akira Naruse

Patent number: 5775864Abstract: The present invention relates to a clamping device for positioning of a sheaf of documents during the heating and/or cooling phase in a thermal binding apparatus, whereby the thermal binding apparatus at its (upper) cover portion is provided with an opening which extents into the interior of the thermal binding apparatus and which consists of a base plate, two side walls and at least one front and/or rear wall. One of the clamping elements is provided having an at least partially curved surface, the clamping element is designed in such a way that clamping area of its curved surface is in contact with the sheaf of documents during the working phase and presses it against the rear and/or front wall of the opening and that it at least partly covers the base plate of the opening during the stand by phase of the binding apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1997Date of Patent: July 7, 1998Assignee: Esselte N.V.Inventor: Dirk Maes

Patent number: 5383756Abstract: For convenient packaging of plastic bookbinding strips, cassettes which may be securely stacked one upon the other are provided. The end edges of each strip are received in channels formed in opposed side rails. The rails are attached to transverse spacer bars which are preferably detachably connected to the side rails and are interchangeable to accommodate strips of different lengths-e.g., 81/2 inches, 11 inches, etc. Cassettes may be securely stacked one upon the other by means of mating stacking struts extending upward and downward from the side rails. Very short stacking struts may be used when packaging flat female binding strips in the cassette. A detent is provided in the ends of the rails preventing removal of strips until the detent is bent out of position. The cassette is especially useful in equipment which mechanically assembles punched sheets and strips preparatory to binding a book in a binding machine.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 1994Date of Patent: January 24, 1995Assignee: VeloBind, Inc.Inventors: John E. Patent number: 5308209Abstract: A debinding apparatus for inclusion in a machine adapted to bind together sheets formed with first apertures spaced longitudinally on one edge thereof. The machine uses a first narrow thermoplastic strip which has studs projecting therefrom and spaced complementary to the first apertures in the sheets and a second narrow strip formed with second apertures spaced complementary to the first apertures in the sheets. The machine has a frame and a platen for supporting the second strip with the sheets superimposed on the second strip and the studs of the first strip extending through the first and second apertures and protruding below the second strip. In addition, the machine includes a plurality of cutting elements, heating elements for heating the cutting elements, and a mechanism for moving the cutting elements to cut off excess stud length and to initiate the formation of heads on the ends of the studs.Type: GrantFiled: November 25, 1992Date of Patent: May 3, 1994Assignee: VeloBind, Inc.Inventors: Phillip M.
