  • Patent number: 5884563
Abstract: A ride attraction includes a vehicle having a seat mover for use by physically disabled passengers. A swing arm is pivotally attached to a jack post in the boat, with an extension arm attached to the swing arm. The physically disabled passenger is moved to a loading position on a seat supported by a dolly. The extension arm of the seat mover engages the seat. The seat is locked onto the extension arm and unlocked from the dolly. The jack post lifts the seat high enough to clear the side of the vehicle. The seat is swung into position in the vehicle and lowered on the jack post, and then locked into position in the vehicle. Accordingly, the physically disabled are provided access to theme park ride attractions.

  • Patent number: 5871329
Abstract: A powered wheelchair ramp includes a drive mechanism having a gear, a cam, and a lever arm keyed to a common shaft to prevent relative motion among these elements. An electric motor drives the gear through a clutch and the lever arm raises or lowers a folding ramp. Energy storage device engage the cam through a follower for storing energy as the ramp is lowered. The energy storage device also damps the motion of the ramp. When the ramp is raised, the energy storage device aids lifting the ramp. The torques applied to the common shaft are such that the net torque in either direction about the shaft is below a predetermined amount. The result is that the ramp can be raised and lowered easily, even by a single person in a wheelchair sitting beside the ramp. The clutch is released for manual operation and can engage at any point for powered operation.

  • Patent number: 5865593
Abstract: A platform-type wheelchair lift for mounting in the stairwell of a vehicle, such as a bus or train. The wheelchair lift includes a platform frame that is movable from a retracted position in which it is stowed underneath the vehicle to an extended position in which it extends out from the side or back of the vehicle. A wheelchair platform is movably coupled to the platform frame by a parallelogram linkage that allows the wheelchair platform to move between a lowered and a raised position. The wheelchair platform includes foldable outer and inner wheelchair barriers that prevent a wheelchair from moving off of the wheelchair platform during operation of the wheelchair lift. The wheelchair platform also includes a mechanical platform interlock mechanism. The platform interlock mechanism is moveable between an unlocked and a locked position. The platform interlock mechanism is in an unlocked position when no weight is placed on the wheelchair platform.

  • Patent number: 5857832
Abstract: The invention provides a restraint and transfer device for restraining a seated passenger, such as a child, for transport in a vehicle and for mechanically lifting the passenger in and out of the vehicle. A mounting frame is secured to a passenger seat of the vehicle with standard lap and shoulder seat belts. A cushioned transfer seat insert is used to seat the passenger in a suitably adapted wheelchair, during lifting in and out of the vehicle, and within the vehicle securely mounted to the frame. As a result, the passenger remains seated in a rigid supporting transfer seat insert. The passenger is not subjected to physical handling and the risk of injury to the caregiver and passenger is reduced during transfer. Releasable body postural positioning belts secure the passenger to the insert and the configuration of insert cushions, supports and postural belts can be flexibly adapted to suit the needs of each individual passenger.

  • Patent number: 5832555
Abstract: A compact movable ramp assembly is provided that can be securely stored beneath a vehicle floor and safely and reliably operated. The ramp assembly comprises a mounting structure having a series of top panels that form the vehicle floor. The ramp assembly also includes a moveable platform that deploys outward from the mounting structure forming an extended ramp from the ground level to the vehicle to allow the passage of passengers across the platform into and out of the vehicle. The compact design of the ramp assembly is achieved by enclosing the motor unit within the ramp assembly and positioning the drive mechanism above the moveable platform but below the top panels of the mounting structure. The platform is formed of two portions pivotally connected by a hinge which enables the platform to pivot downward and allows the ramp assembly to be used in partial stages of deployment.

Abstract: A steerable, powered wheelchair with a mobile base, and two movable arms that are attached to a seat. The seat is attached to the arms with pivots that permit rotation of the seat in both vertical and horizontal planes. The arms can move through three positions. The first position is the at rest position. Here, the seat rests near or directly on the base. In the second position, the seat is spaced vertically above the mobile base. In the third position, the seat is extended forward of the mobile base 2 and can drop down to floor or ground level. A feature of the mobile base it that when the seat is in the third position, the mobile base can rotate vertically about the front wheels. This allows the wheelchair to run on two wheels, increasing the wheelchair's angular mobility. In this operational mode, the user can exercise his or her legs by bouncing them against the ground.

Abstract: A vehicle that provides safe and stable transportation of passengers, yet allows passengers, including wheelchair-bound passengers, to quickly enter and exit the vehicle without climbing up or down and without stepping on the seats has been provided. The preferred embodiment of the vehicle of the present invention, which is towed by an underwater cable system, has a double hull construction with a fixed outer hull and a moveable inner hull or seating platform, which may be raised or lowered. In the ride dispatch area, the inner hull is raised so that the floor of the inner hull is even with that of the vehicle gunwales and the dispatch floor level. During the ride, the hull is lowered so that the floor of the inner hull is below the level of the vehicle gunwales, and thus the vehicle forms a secure and stable seating compartment configuration for the duration of the ride. The vehicle is further equipped to secure wheelchair-bound guests to the inner hull quickly and easily.

Abstract: A wheelchair lift is mounted in a vehicle at one side of the doorway, for example at the front frame of a sliding side door of a van. A platform is positionable horizontally for carrying a wheelchair to be moved into or out of the vehicle. A vertical drive mechanism is attached to the platform at a corner adjacent the vehicle doorway, and has a hydraulic cylinder and chain drive raising and lowering the wheelchair relative to the doorway. A base member is attached to the vehicle inside the doorway, for example on the floor. A carriage is carried on the base member for linear movement toward and away from the doorway. The vertical drive mechanism is coupled to the carriage on a vertical hinge or pivot axis that is movable by a linear actuator from a position at which the hinge axis is inside the vehicle to a position outside of the vehicle clear of the doorway. The platform can be raised, lowered and rotated on the vertical pivot axis.

  • Patent number: 5520403
Abstract: A wheelchair having a set of features which facilitate transfering a patient to an alternative surface and raising the chair to an alternative seating height. The first of these features enables each of the handwheels to be independently pivoted rearward by raising its related arm rest. The motion of the wheel is over centering and its rearward position is determined by a brake pad which engages its respective handwheel. The rearward position of the handwheel is such as to clear the rear of the seat. The forward position is determined with the arm rest in the normal down position and latched to the frame. The second feature is a lifting mechanism for raising the patient to the level of an alternative surface such as a bed. The third feature has the seat surface fabricated from a moveable belt which laterally transports the patient to the alternative surface. The wheelchair also has an embodiment which allows folding for easy transport.
