  • Patent number: 5186282
Abstract: A support platform for a person in a wheelchair is disposed at ground level and mounted on the top of a movable support frame within a hole in the ground. The movable support frame is surrounded by a fixed frame having guide rollers for guiding the movable support frame in its vertical movement. A U-shaped handrail, which is not above the ground when the handrail is in its lowermost position, moves upwardly initially relative to the support platform. When the handrail has been moved upwardly a first predetermined distance by a drive arrangement, the drive arrangement then causes the movable support frame to move upwardly with the handrail to transport the person in the wheelchair on the support platform from the ground level position to a raised position at which the support platform is level with a surface of a building to enable the wheelchair to be rolled to the surface of the building.

  • Patent number: 5135350
Abstract: This invention is a carrier for an ambulance litter which safely and easily transports a patient between the ambulance and a hospital gurney. The litter carrier includes a frame and a platform, the platform being pivotably mounted to the frame. Moving the platform around its pivot point causes the platform to be raised or lowered relative to the frame. To transport a patient, the operator raises the platform to the level of the ambulance floor, and moves the carrier to the vicinity of the ambulance. The operator then rolls or moves the litter out of the ambulance, onto the platform, and may then secure the litter to the platform with a suitable fastener. The platform includes channels which provide a path for the wheels or feet of the litter, and which tend to prevent the litter from falling from the carrier. As the platform is lowered, its downward movement is cushioned by shock absorbers. The operator then easily lifts the patient from the litter and onto the hospital gurney or other carrier.

  • Patent number: 5111912
Abstract: A drive assembly (250) for use with a platform lift. The assembly includes a set of linkage arms (30, 32) connected between the platform (22) and a stable carriage arm (34). A pair of sprockets (50, 60) connected to the carriage arm at the linkage arm pivot points control the rotation of the linkage arm and the movement of the platform relative to the carriage arm. The sprokets are connected together by a leaf chain assembly (70) so as to show rotation of the sprockets in a simultaneous movement of the linkage arms. A compression spring (260) is attached at one end to the leaf chain assembly and at the other end to the carriage arm. When the platform is moved into the top-most position, the spring is compressed. The platform is lowered by allowing the spring to expand so that it actuates the leaf chain assembly so as to cause the linkage arms to move past their top-center positions; once the linkage arms move past their top-center positions, gravity can then force the platform downwards.

Abstract: The present invention comprises a lifting apparatus installed near or upon a generally horizontal raised bed of a vehicle for safely moving a wheelchair and its occupant operator to and from the raised bed. The lift apparatus uses a single actuating means to automatically and sequentially serve three distinct functions: (1) appropriately engages one or more safety barriers before a laterally extending support platform is moved, thereby preventing the wheelchair and operator from falling off of the platform; (2) moves the platform between a lower support position located at ground level and an upper support position located at floor level; and (3) moves the platform between a generally horizontal, laterally extending support position and a compact, generally upright stowed position. The lift apparatus is also designed to prevent an appendage of the operator from becoming pinched when the support platform is raised from the support position to the stowed position.
