Abstract: Installations for harvesting energy of river and ocean tidal currents consist of multiple Darrieus type turbines with funnels, which are located inline on the river or ocean bottom and oriented perpendicular to direction of water movement due to tide or river current. Use of Darrieus type turbines with funnels significantly increases efficiency of energy utilization of water streams in comparison versus system not utilizing funnels. Use of greater number of Darrieus turbines operating in line allows to utilize more powerful gearbox and generator, thus improving economics of their operation. For the purpose of simplification the regular maintenance of the system the generator and all auxiliary systems are located above water, except 90-degrees gearbox. To prevent water entering 90-degrees gearbox it always is under air pressure slightly above hydrostatic pressure of water above it.

Abstract: The invention discloses a portable hydroelectric apparatus which converts the kinetic energy of water caused by gravity into electrical energy. This conversion is accomplished without the presence of a river or stream. A new type of buoyancy motor is disclosed which is formed as a U-tube erected vertically. One leg and the curved portion at the bottom are filled with a series of separate air-filled tanks. The other leg is filled with water, with a suitable seal at the bottom of the leg through which are made to jut 1½ tanks so the seal prevents water from leaking downward into the air space of the curved portion of the U-tube. Suitable means prevent the water column in the one leg from pushing the series of tanks out of the U-tube. The leading as well as the succeeding tanks behind it are made buoyant in sequence. In rising through the water-filled leg of the U-tube water is pushed through a nozzle which is made to operate hydroelectric devices.

  • Patent number: 6217284
Abstract: An oscillating fluid flow motor and a fluid flow power system that converts the energy in the flowing fluid to mechanical energy through a vane that automatically sweeps back and forth across the flow. In one embodiment of the oscillating fluid flow motor, the motor includes (1) a support structure, (2) an elongated swing arm pivotably and rotatably mounted to the support structure, (3) a vane having a concave face, (4) an elastic link operatively coupled in tension between the swing arm and a support, and (5) a direction control mechanism operatively coupled to the swing arm. The vane is connected to the swing arm so that, upon rotation of the swing arm about its longitudinal axis, the orientation of the concave face of the vane changes relative to the flow of a fluid confronting the face. The direction control mechanism is operative to selectively re-orient the face of the vane at each of two points that define the ends of the bidirectional stroke of the swing arm.

  • Patent number: 6139255
Abstract: A bidirectional hydroturbine assembly for tidal deployment. A hydroturbine is carried by a cylindrical shroud. Rotation of the hydroturbine blades by tidal currents drives rotation of the shaft, thereby converting kinetic energy into electrical energy. Stabilizer fins extend radially outwardly from the shroud along substantially the entire length of the shroud. Each corner of each stabilizer fin carries a pivot point for connection of pivoting deflectors between adjacent pivot points of adjacent stabilizer fins at the same end of the shroud. Pivoting deflectors are positioned between pivot points about the periphery of each end of the shroud and are biased such that tidal current flow in a first direction urges pivoting deflectors at the first end of the shroud into a non-deflective position, while urging pivoting deflectors at the second end of the shroud into a deflective position, and vice versa for tidal current flow in the opposite direction.

  • Patent number: 6091161
Abstract: A method is described of controlling a tethered, underwater, water current-driven turbine, power-generating device. A predetermined maximum depth and a predetermined minimum depth are set. In response to sensing depth of the device, an ascend protocol or a descend protocol are selectively invoked. These protocols maintain an operating depth of the device that is midway between the predetermined maximum depth and the predetermined minimum depth. The turbine includes variable-pitch rotor blades. A maximum allowable drag force load on the turbine rotors is selected. The pitch of the variable-pitch rotor blades on the turbine is adjusted such that the drag force loading of the device does not exceed a maximum design level.

  • Patent number: 5471098
Abstract: A device is located in a body of flowing water and includes a bridge supporting an electrical generator and anchors for holding the bridge stationary with respect to water flowing past that bridge. The device includes a water wheel submerged in the water beneath the bridge and which includes a plurality of arms radiating outwardly from a central arm. A hydrowing is movably attached to each radial arm and includes two flow impact sections of different surface areas. The hydrowings move with respect to the radial arms to maintain a flow area facing upstream on one side of the central arm that is larger than the flow area facing upstream on the diametrically opposite side of the central arm. This unbalanced flow area creates a force on the central arm tending to rotate that central arm. The central arm is connected to a rotor.

  • Patent number: 5451137
Abstract: A reaction turbine capable of providing high speed unidirectional rotation under a reversible ultra low head pressure and/or high velocity fluid flow is disclosed. The turbine comprises a working wheel with a plurality of airfoil-shaped blades mounted transversely to the direction of fluid flow for rotation in a plane parallel to the fluid flow. The blades are arranged in a helical configuration, a modification of a delta turbine, which ensures that a portion of the blades are always positioned perpendicular to the fluid pressure, thereby creating maximum thrust to spin the turbine and ensuring a continuous speed of rotation with no accelerations and decelerations. The skewed leading edges further reduce resistance to the turbine rotation. A channel having a rectangular cross-section may be provided to direct the fluid flow to the blades.
