Runner With Annular Blade Rows Or Fluid Channels Spaced On Common Radial Plane Patents (Class 415/83)
  • Patent number: 10934843
Abstract: A radial turbomachine with axial thrust compensation includes a rotor disc with main bladed rings. The main bladed rings together with auxiliary bladed rings delimit a plurality of concentric front main chambers at different pressures. A plurality of concentric rear annular main chambers, each in fluid communication with a respective front main chamber and at the same pressure as the respective front main chamber, is delimited between a rear face of the rotor disc and a fixed casing. The concentric front main chambers are delimited by front areas of the rotor disc and concentric rear annular main chambers are delimited by rear annular areas of the rotor disc. All the rear annular areas are identical to the respective front areas except for one, which is a compensation area configured to compensate, at least in part, for the thrust of external pressure acting on the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4917569
Abstract: A containment system for a radial flow turbine assembly includes a housing assembly, and a turbine rotor journalled for rotation about an axis and having a hub portion and a generally tapering disc portion extending radially outward from the hub portion. An annular nozzle assembly normally secured in the housing assembly against rotation forms a tapered rotor chamber within which the rotor rotates with minimum axial and radial clearance between the rotor and the chamber. A plurality of support struts extend axially inward from the nozzle assembly to a minimal axial and radial clearance with the hub portion of the rotor and forms a first stage of containment. The rotor must first break through the nozzle struts and separate the nozzle assembly. A rotatable nozzle assembly then absorbs some of the force by rotating in the housing assembly and containment ring. An armored containment ring stops the fragments that escape the nozzle assembly and finally, an outer housing provides still further containment.

  • Patent number: 4645414
Abstract: A combination vacuum pump, low friction bearing and seal assembly is provided in which a rotor relatively rotatable with respect to a stator has two sets of radially spaced, concentric spiral grooves. As the rotor rotates, one set of grooves forces sufficient ambient air between confronting surfaces of the rotor and stator to keep them axially spaced and provide a low friction bearing. Another set of grooves forces sufficient air from the vessel and through a one-way air exit to evacuate the vessel. A restriction created by the axially spaced confronting surfaces substantially prevents ambient air from moving radially inwardly to the evacuated vessel, as well as trapping the ambient air to maintain the axial spacing. Any ambient air passing through the restriction is dumped back to ambient through the same air exit, thereby keeping the evacuated vessel sealed.

  • Patent number: 4453886
Abstract: A centrifugal pump-compressor includes a chamber adapted to rotate about a predetermined axis and vanes extending radially with respect to such axis and adapted to impel a fluid at least in the radial direction of the chamber. The vanes induce a primary flow of the fluid in the chamber. The apparatus further includes a series of venturis disposed in the chamber and adapted to receive the primary flow therethrough. The outwardly disposed venturis generally overlap the immediate adjacent inwardly disposed ones. A diffusing sink is positioned between the venturis. The primary flow of fluid is accelerated as it passes through each of the venturis, its velocity then decreases and the pressure in the fluid increases in each of the diffusing sinks. In this manner the energy of the fluid is converted successively from kinetic to potential forms as it moves outwardly through the chamber.

Abstract: This invention relates to a centrifugal pump characterized by a pair of novel self-aligning impeller hub seals located in the high pressure cavity and subjected to the influence thereof to maintain them in fluid-tight sealed contact with the adjacent cavity walls to which they are loosely fastened. The invention also encompasses a novel thrust-type hub seal subassembly that is continually biased into fluid-tight sealed contact with an annular abutment on the impeller hub, the latter element being the only surface in relatively movable frictional engagement with the seal with such engagement being face-to-face so that the thrust compensates for any wear therebetween.
