  • Patent number: 7399158
Abstract: A blade arrangement 31 includes an array of radially extending blades 20, which may for example comprise a fan of a gas turbine engine for an aircraft. The blades 20 are mounted for rotation about a central axis X-X. The blade arrangement 31 further includes a damping arrangement 32 comprising means 34 for inducing an axi-symmetric magnetic field whose axis of symmetry coincides with the central axis X-X of rotation of the blades 20. The damping arrangement 32 is configured such that when the magnetic field is induced, any movement of the blade 20 other than pure rotation about the central axis results in the magnetic field causing a force to be exerted on the blade 20, the force resisting such movement. The damping arrangement may be provided with means for inducing the magnetic field only when there is an increased likelihood of vibration of the blades, for example when a foreign body has entered the air intake of the engine.

  • Patent number: 6974307
Abstract: A self-guiding wind turbine made of two reinforced parallel girders whose side center of thrust is displaced from the column axis where it is supported and turns. Its dihedral-shaped two-bladed rotor is self-stabilizing since its center of thrust is behind its center of gravity and the guiding axis of the turbine, thus improving self-guiding whilst in motion. The axial thrust is controlled, whilst the head and rotor are tilting, hydraulically by counter-pressure, ensuring they do not surpass the power collected and the moments on the structure, shoe and ground. The self-guiding structure can tilt hydraulically lowering its head and rotor and facilitating its assembly and maintenance, and can remain “asleep” when not in use, thus reducing the visual impact on the environment. This turbine makes use of the force of the wind to control itself, simplifying the manufacture of large turbines connected to the network or in isolated applications.

  • Patent number: 5746576
Abstract: A wind energy conversion device includes a support frame that pivots on a vertical yaw axis, and a rotor/bushing assembly coupled to the support frame through a governing coupling that permits the rotor/bushing assembly to pivot on a governing axis relative to the support frame. The governing axis is inclined from the vertical preferably by about 30.degree. to provide a substantial gravitational bias of the rotor/bushing assembly toward a normal operating position when wind velocities are below a predetermined threshold. The governing axis also is laterally offset from a drive axis about which the wind rotates a propeller of the rotor/bushing assembly. This facilitates alignment of the rotor/bushing assembly so that the drive axis intersects the yaw axis. As a result, wind induced thrust does not generate a torque about the yaw axis.

  • Patent number: 5366342
Abstract: The windmill has a stub tower having a rotatable platform carrying a wind driven fan with an input shaft driving a transmission mechanism on the platform. The mechanism carries two balanced cranks which rotate continuously and two pitman arms at opposite ends of an output cross shaft driving a single rocking beam having a massive head moved up and down. The head is coupled by flexible members to a vertical pump rod which is reciprocated by the rocking beam. A tail assembly coupled to the platform tracks the wind and rotates the platform so that the fan faces into the wind. The tracking assembly furls the fan out of the wind when the wind speed is excessive. The tracking assembly rises up on an inclined coupling rod to load the tracking assembly gravitationally when the fan is in furled position. When the wind speed decreases, the tracking assembly descends on the coupling rod to turn the platform and unfurl the fan to face the wind.

  • Patent number: 4678394
Abstract: The self-governing energy panel is to be used as one of a group of panels designed to collect wind for and govern the speed of the windpowered traveling shaft machine. This machine is designed to convert windpower into other forms of energy (e.g. electricity or direct-drive) by connection to a generator or other device. The panel is hung on bearings that are on the support beams that protrude out from the horizontal shaft of the windpowered traveling shaft machine. The panel has the majority of its length below the bearings; however, there are several places the panel may be attached to the beams thus changing how much of the panel is above or below the bearings. The panel will hang vertically to the ground in calm periods but with increasing wind speed the panel can change to a completely horizontal position by rotating on the bearings.

  • Patent number: 4449889
Abstract: Disclosed is an inclined axis windmill. The windmill has a plurality of blades generally transverse to the upstanding rotor shaft. The blades have an airfoil cross-sectional shape and are oriented with a negative angle of attack, thereby allowing the leading edge of the airfoil to turn into the wind. The windmill preferably has a tilting assembly which tilts the rotor shaft and blades at an angle dependent upon the velocity of the wind. As the wind velocity increases the rotor shaft is automatically tilted into a more nearly vertical position by the control tail. This automatic tilting of the windmill provides automatic control of the rotor speed. The rotor blades are preferably pivotally connected to the rotor shaft.
