  • Patent number: 6890160
Abstract: A fuel pump is provided that is submersible within a fuel, for example, within a fuel tank of an automotive vehicle and is particularly suited for use with high alcohol content fuels that tend to contain ionic species. The fuel pump comprises an electric motor that includes a commutator and a negative brush electrode that is connected to a negative terminal of an external power supply. The electric motor is at least partially disposed within a metal shell that is in contact with the fuel. The metal shell is also connected to the negative terminal of the external power supply. During operation, a negative electrical potential is applied to the metal shell to preferentially react with ions within the fuel. In this manner, the metal shell serves as a anode to reduce the concentration of ionic species in the fuel, thereby decreasing reactions with the brush electrode and extending the useful life of the fuel pump.

  • Patent number: 6887046
Abstract: An impeller pump with thermostatically adjustable guide vanes is suitable for use as an automotive coolant pump. The pump is driven by a constant speed electric motor, and flow variation is controlled by varying the orientation of the vanes. Orientation of the vanes is effected by a wax-type thermostat, which senses coolant temperature: flow is increased when the coolant is hot, and decreased as the coolant cools. The variable guide vanes are mounted for pivoting about radial axes, and are located just upstream from the pump impeller.

  • Patent number: 6877964
Abstract: Apparatus for inducing, impeding, selectively filtering or otherwise effecting fluid flow in microfluidics applications. Opposing mesh layers are placed into relative motion by a variety of motive forces. Fluid between the opposing mesh layers is compressed so as to be pumped through the mesh layers when the relative motion of the layers is toward each other. Mesh layers may also be offset from each other though an actuating force so that one mesh layer blocks the openings in the other mesh layer, thereby creating an impediment to fluid flow. The degree of offset may be varied so as to create a partial impediment to fluid flow, thereby presenting a filter effect.

  • Patent number: 6857860
Abstract: The invention concerns a metering gear pump comprising a set of gears supported and guided solely by the inner peripheral surface of the lobe of the chamber wherein they are housed. They do not comprise any shaft to act as support or guide, thereby enabling to reduce significantly useless spaced difficult to rinse when changing the product to be pumped. For the same purpose, the driving shaft is flexibly connected to the driving gear. Such arrangement provides the advantage of requiring only one single packing seal. Such a pump, connected to a drive motor and an encoder delivering a signal proportional to the number of pump cycles, enables to provide an accurate metering pump for numerous uses.

The resistive muffler is assembled inline with the suction gas flow of the compressor and is positioned within the compressor housing. The resistive muffler attenuates the sound generated by the compressor during its operation as refrigerant gas is drawn into the compressor from an evaporator and passes through the resistive muffler in transit to the suction valve and hence to the region of the compressor where the gas is physically compressed. The resistive muffler includes a muffler housing having an intake end and an exhaust end. An acoustic foam assembly is incorporated into the muffler housing.

Abstract: A viscous seal for fluid transfer devices that deviates from the conventional wisdom of avoiding contact between the seal and a rotating drive shaft of the fluid transfer device. Instead of avoiding contact, contact between the seal and drive shaft is used to effect axial alignment of a sealing sleeve with the shaft. As a result, the viscous seal is compliant in that the sealing sleeve can follow the axis of the drive shaft. Accordingly, the sealing sleeve can fit snugly around the drive shaft for more effective prevention of leakage of low or any viscosity fluid along the drive shaft, but without any significant radial load being applied to the sealing sleeve that might cause undue wear or damage due to galling.

A feed pump is constituted by the pump room where a feed pump mechanism is connected to an axial end of the drive shaft. A filter element is accommodated in the filter room. A casing cover easily attachable and detachable to the casing has a fuel inlet port through which fuel is sucked to the filter room and, then, flows via the filter element into the pump room where the fuel is pressurized according to rotation of the drive shaft. Accordingly, foreign material contained in fuel is eliminated before entering the pump room. Further, fuel flow area of the fuel element is larger than that of the fuel inlet port, resulting in less pressure loss of fuel passing through the filter element even if mesh size of filter element is smaller.

  • Patent number: 6790012
Abstract: An air compressor unit having an enclosure that permits adequate cooling air flow, and reduces the amount of noise that emanates from the air compressor unit. The enclosure has a partition that separates the interior of the enclosure into two compartments: a discharge compartment and a component compartment. A discharge aperture is in fluid flow communication with the discharge compartment. A compressor and motor are contained in the component compartment. The component compartment may be separated in a first compartment and a second compartment. Inlets allow cooling air to enter the enclosure, and a discharge aperture permits the cooling air to exit the enclosure. A blower draws cooling air into the enclosure through the inlets. An aftercooler is located between the compressor and the discharge aperture. The enclosure and compartments are configured to reduce the amount of direct “line of sight” noise that emanates from the air compressor unit.

Abstract: A hydraulic fluid reservoir for a hydraulic power system includes a reservoir housing having an internal chamber for containing a supply of hydraulic fluid, an outlet for communicating the fluid from the housing to an inlet of a hydraulic pump, and a return flow inlet for receiving a return flow of fluid into the chamber. The reservoir includes a flow diffuser having a diffuser inlet communicating with the return flow inlet for receiving at least a fraction of the return flow into the diffuser. The diffuser has an inner fluid guide wall that is preferably conical which diverges in the downstream direction in order to quiet any turbulence in the flow within the diffuser and to discharge into the bulk of the fluid into the chamber to be deaerated.

Abstract: The invention relates to the field of petrochemistry, in particular to a method of compressing a gaseous hydrocarbon-containing medium, for example, different hydrocarbon gases including flares produced in the oil refining and petrochemical industries. A distillate of a rectifying column of an atmosphere-vacuum oil refining unit is fed as the fresh liquid working medium into a circulation loop of a liquid hydrocarbon-containing medium, which contains a liquid-gas jet device, a separator and a pump. The liquid hydrocarbon-containing medium is removed from the circulation loop to a cracking and rectifying unit in which the liquid hydrocarbon-containing medium is subjected to cracking with subsequent rectification in the rectifying column of that unit.

Abstract: A vacuum conduit connected to a vacuum pump has a shield surface which absorbs radiation to reduce the total radiation falling on the vacuum pump. The vacuum system includes the vacuum conduit connected between a process chamber and the vacuum pump and a surface treatment along at least a portion of the shield surface adapted to absorb radiation. Since the treatment is on the interior surface of the vacuum conduit and does not extend into the center of the conduit, gaseous flow to the pump is not impeded. In this manner radiation entering the vacuum pump and falling on the cryogenic array is reduced without impeding gaseous flow to the cryogenic surface. The system therefore minimizes the radiation load on the cryogenic array in the vacuum pump without impeding the gaseous flow through the vacuum pump.
