Abstract: A control for a beverage dispenser monitors operation thereof to sense a beverage sold out condition. The control senses the voltage demand of a pump motor as it pumps the beverage from a source thereof to a dispensing valve. If the sensed voltage is high, that indicates the pump is encountering resistance and fluid is present. Conversely, if the sensed voltage use is low, that is taken to indicate that the pump is not pumping any liquid and that the container is empty. A software routine is used to sense the average current requirements during dispensing and adjust the reference voltage for the normal full reservoir pump current value based on a historical average thereof as indicated by a predetermined number of prior dispense cycles. The control uses the adjusted reference voltage as a base for determining a sold out condition.

The methods, and systems employing the methods, involve isolating a pump chamber from its surroundings, for example by closing an inlet and outlet valve on lines to and from the chamber, and determining the volume of the pump chamber with a force applied to a moveable or flexible surface of the pump chamber. The volume of the pump chamber is then redetermined in a similar fashion but with a second, different level of force applied to the surface of the pump chamber. Abstract: A tube in a pumped fluid system can become obstructed by a clog. The clog is automatically cleared in response to an obstruction signal by modifying the pumping cycle which is normally used to pump the fluid. In particular, the pumping cycle is stopped after a compression stroke to apply sustained high pressure in the clogged tube, using the same fluid and the same pump, to expel the clog from the tube. The obstruction signal is derived by measuring pressure during a portion of the pumping cycle when elevated pressure due to viscosity effects have subsided. Therefore, if the pressure remains elevated, a determination of an obstructed state can reliably be made which may be caused by a clog.

  • Patent number: 6213724
Abstract: A method for controlling working fluid surge in a centrifugal compressor. According to the method, surge detection is accomplished by calculating the change in the compressible fluid mass flow rate that accompanies surge in a compressor, the compressor having means for sensing a first fluid temperature, means for sensing a first pressure, means for sensing a second pressure, and means for measuring current drawn by a compressor prime mover, the method comprising the steps of: calculating the time rate of change of the first fluid temperature; calculating the time rate of change of the first fluid pressure; calculating the time rate of change of the second fluid pressure; calculating the time rate of change of current drawn by the compressor prime mover; calculating the mass flow rate by combining the calculated rates of change; and comparing the calculated mass flow rate to a predetermined acceptable mass flow rate to determine if surge is present.

  • Patent number: 6206646
Abstract: In a method for the detection of cavitations in a space to be monitored, the space to be monitored is monitored by means of a sensor (2) which is capable of learning. In this, a state in which cavitations arise in any case in the space to be monitored is first produced during a learning process for the duration of a first time interval (t1). After the completion of the first time interval (t1) a state in which cavitations do not arise in any case in the space to be monitored is produced for the duration of a second time interval (t2). In each of the two time intervals the sensor (2) learns which signals correspond to cavitations and which signals correspond to non-cavitations respectively in the space to be monitored.

  • Patent number: 6196807
Abstract: A pressure gauge of a tire pump includes a chamber communicated with the chamber and a pressure indicator is movably received in the chamber. The pressure indicator has a tube with a head portion attached to a first end thereof and a receptacle defined in a second end thereof. The head portion is in slidable contact with an inner periphery of the chamber and the tube is not in contact with the inner periphery of the chamber. A first rotational member is rotatably mounted to an end wall defining the receptacle of the tube. A second rotational member is rotatably mounted to the end member. A spring has a first end securely attached to the first rotational member to move therewith and a second end securely attached to the second rotational member to rotate therewith. Thus, rotational effect of the spring during movement of the pressure indicator is eliminated to provide accurate tire pressure indication.

  • Patent number: 6186743
Abstract: A sequential controller is provided for sequencing multiple electric loads such electric pumps. That is, for each cycle the next load is designated as the lead load in a round-robin fashion. The controller uses cost effective electro-mechanical relay logic an thus avoids conventional solid state technology. In order to sequence the loads on each successive cycle, the electro-mechanical relay connected to the sensors comprises a double-throw contact set. The double-throw contact set comprises two complementary contacts, both of which alternate between normally open and normally closed on each successive cycle. In this manner one each successive cycle, the pumps designated as the lead pump and the lag pump automatically alternate in a round-robin fashion. Further, when the lead pump is disabled the lag pump is immediately actuated without disruption of service.

  • Patent number: 6183208
Abstract: A motor system using a totally enclosed fan-cooled (TEFC) electric motor to provide power. The motor enclosure may be sealed with a variety of sealing devices, including a double mechanical seal a single mechanical seal, a double lip seal injected with grease, a labyrinth seal, and/or a repeller positioned adjacent the motor enclosure. A release mechanism prevents the fan from creating excessive drag when the system is immersed in water. The fan cools the motor when the water level is below the motor, and the surrounding water combines with the fan to cool the motor when the water level rises to at least partially surround the motor. When the fan is at least partially immersed, the release mechanism substantially prevents the fan from imposing a load on the motor due to the surrounding water. The release mechanism can take the form of a shear key, a torque-release clutch or flexible fan blades. Alternatively, a separate fan motor may be provided for driving the cooling fan.
