    Abstract: Powder metallurgy products of high tensile strength are formed in a pore-free state by a novel process which entirely avoids the use of canisters. An open-pore specimen is purged with depurative gas, backfilled with a reactive gas and, while still immersed in the reactive gas, compressed isostatically to an extent necessary to close the pores. The specimen may then be compressed to full density without the need for either high vacuum or a depurative or reactive gas atmosphere.

    Abstract: A continuous extrusion machine, in which feedstock is admitted (at 50) to a peripheral groove (12) in a rotating wheel (10), is enclosed in that groove by a cooperating shoe (24), and is frictionally dragged along an arcuate passageway (48) formed by said groove and a projecting portion (30) of said shoe towards an abutment (36) carried by the shoe. The abutment tip and adjacent wheel parts disposed downstream of the abutment are cooled directly by a jet of cooling fluid issuing from a nozzle (64) carried downstream on the shoe.     Abstract: A hermetically sealed capsule (10) containing degased metal powder (11) is embedded in a soft metal flow die (20). Subsequently the flow die (20) is compressed in a cavity block, thereby compressing the metal powder (11) by the hydrostatic pressure of the flow die and simultaneously shaping the said powder. This results in the reforming of the structure right down to the interior of the particles with compression of up to 100%. The shaping process can be aided by moulding dies (17, 18) embedded in the flow die (10) around the capsule (10) at a distance from each other and, when closed, forming a cavity, the shape of which deviates from that of the original shape of the capsule (10). The capsule (10) containing the metal powder is formed during closure of the moulding cavity.

    Abstract: To increase the creep strength of a titanium-containing alloy which also contains chromium, the alloy powder is heated in the presence of ammonia at a temperature of the order of 700.degree. C. so as to form a layer of chromium nitride(s) on the particles and is then heated further in an inert atmosphere at a temperature between 1000.degree. C. and 1150.degree. C. to dissociate the chromium nitride(s) thereby effecting nitriding of the titanium to titanium nitride which affords dispersion-strengthening of the alloy.

    Abstract: The invention relates to cylinder liners for internal combustion engines comprising a matrix based on aluminum alloys of high mechanical strength, obtained by powder metallurgy, and methods of producing them. The liners comprise a dispersion of grains of an added intermetallic compound, apart from the dispersion of such intermetallic compounds as may exist in the alloy, the added compound having a melting temperature of over 700.degree. C. The liners are obtained by extruding or sintering a mixture of powders. The liners of the invention may be used particularly in the automobile industry and in any kind of industry where liner-piston units of good compatibility must be obtained from aluminum alloys.
