  • Publication number: 20100175293
Abstract: A firearm handguard having two identical halves, or half guards, can engage the barrel nut of certain firearms to thereby provide a mounting rail system. The barrel nut attaches the barrel to the receiver. The half guards can be separately positioned in engagement with the barrel nut before fastening them together. The fastening operation can cause the half guards to clamp onto the barrel nut. Alternatively, the front handguard cup of some firearms can prevent the handguard from slipping forward while the rear barrel nut engagement prevents handguard rotation. Free floating variants, however, must clamp onto the barrel nut.

  • Patent number: 7523580
Abstract: Existing floating handguards have the problem of adding size and weight to M16 style gas operated rifles because these tubular handguards attach to a relatively large diametral surface which lies outward of a firearm operating member or gas tube. Existing handguards are mounted thus so that the handguard inside surface will mechanically clear the gas tube. The present invention solves this problem by providing a handguard system integrated to a firearm, the system having a one-piece extended barrel nut with a smaller diameter outer surface configured to lie inward of the gas tube, between the gas tube and the barrel. A one-piece generally tubular handguard has an outer surface with a longitudinal rib and an inner surface with an inner diameter and a groove which is aligned with the rib. The handguard inner diameter engages the barrel nut outer surface and the groove provides clearance for the gas tube. The rib is configured to maintain the rigidity of the handguard adjacent the groove.

Abstract: In one aspect, a firearm system allows multiple modular firearm configurations, thereby providing significant customizability of the firearm by the user. All of the components necessary to fire the weapon are carried on a common receiver assembly. Interchangeable slide assemblies and handgrip modules can be detachably connected to the common receiver to substitute one firearm size, handgrip circumference, and/or munitions caliber for another. For example, the handgrip module can be substituted so as to change the size of the firearm and/or the slide assembly can be changed for purposes of changing the caliber of the firearm. In another aspect, an improved firing pin safety, which is capable of use in a one-piece machined slide, and which is additionally capable of being manufactured as a stamped sheet metal part, is provided.

Abstract: A hand guard system for use with a firearm is described. A holding unit for releasably coupling the hand guard system to a firearm includes a coupling element having an opening, a flange, and at least one coupling portion. The flange and the coupling portion form the opening so that the coupling element is slidably removable about the barrel of the firearm, and an inner surface of the coupling portion engages an outer surface of the barrel nut. The holding unit further includes a sleeve operatively coupled to the coupling element having an inner surface defining an opening so that the sleeve is slidably removable about the barrel of the firearm and the inner surface forms a shoulder and defines a groove distally located from the shoulder and sized to receive a snap ring. The snap ring retains the sleeve to the coupling element such that the shoulder and snap ring are located on opposite sides of the flange of the coupling element.
