    Abstract: A system includes a selective catalytic reactor and a bypass line. The selective catalytic reactor is located downstream of a furnace that generates flue gases. The bypass line contacts an input line to the selective catalytic reactor-, where the bypass line is adapted to handle a volume of flue gases diverted from the selective catalytic reactor. A first control damper is disposed at an inlet to the selective catalytic reactor; and a second control damper is disposed at an inlet to the bypass line. The first control damper and the second control damper interact to divide the flue gas stream between the selective catalytic reactor and the bypass line in a ratio to reduce the amount of sulfur trioxide released from the system to a desirable value.

Additionally, methods of removing atmospheric pollution compounds from a waste gas stream are disclosed that include introducing a waste gas stream and at least one additional gas stream, mist stream, liquid stream or combination thereof into a single-stage air scrubbing apparatus at a flow rate sufficient to allow for conversion of the at least one atmospheric pollution compound.

The instantaneous reaction rate during a catalyst transition period can be determined using real-time measured process variables, and material balance calculations to provide an instantaneous reaction rate in approximately real time. According to certain embodiments, a material balance can be performed on the reactor system using a continuous ideal stirred tank reactor to determine the fractions of each type of catalyst that are present in the reactor, as well as the overall weight percent of catalyst in the reactor. A controller can then calculate the overall instantaneous reaction rate based on the respective catalyst fractions and the overall weight percent of catalyst in the reactor. The catalyst feed rate can then be adjusted based on the determined instantaneous reaction rate to maintain the instantaneous reaction rate within desired limits during a catalyst transition period.
