Patent number: 5698208Abstract: Methods and compositions, which rely upon borax toxicants, to control Tephritidae fruit fly populations below economic thresholds are disclosed. More particularly, methods and compositions which utilize borax toxicants are disclosed which cause the Tephritidae fruit flies to die prematurely or which interfere with the female Tephritidae fruit flies to produce eggs for a period of about seven days. A preferred borax toxicant is borax wherein an effective amount in the compositions to accomplish the above is between at least about 0.01M and about 0.12M or more. A lethal amount of borax that should be consumed by the fruit flies in about a 24 hour period is believed to be between at least about 5 mM and about 10 mM or more, whereas the amount of borax that should be consumed by the female fruit flies within about a 24 hour period to prevent the female fruit flies from producing eggs for about seven days or longer is believed to be at least about 2.5 mM and 5 mM or more.Type: GrantFiled: September 19, 1995Date of Patent: December 16, 1997Assignee: University of FloridaInventors: Herbert N. Patent number: 5672362Abstract: Dust mites are a pest that is present in most homes. Their fecal pellets are known to be a significant cause of allergies. A method for controlling dust mites includes providing a 5% disodium octaborate tetrahydrate (DOT) solution, and applying it to an infested surface, such as a carpet or bedding, with a hot water vacuum. The solution is applied evenly, and is partially extracted by the vacuum on the same stroke, so that the surface is left relatively dry. The application and extraction process also cleans the surface by removing dirt and a significant number of dust mites and their fecal pellets. The residual solution kills most of the dust mites, but it poses an insignificant health exposure to humans. After drying, the applied DOT also resists removal by subsequent dry vacuuming, so that it remains effective for many weeks.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 1996Date of Patent: September 30, 1997Inventor: James Burnett

Patent number: 5505953Abstract: Water-soluble borate-polyol complexes are useful as buffers and/or antimicrobials in aqueous ophthalmic compositions, including those containing polyvinyl alcohol. These compositions have greater antimicrobial activity than comparable compositions containing typical borate buffers and unexpectedly increase the antimicrobial efficacy of other antimicrobial agents when used in combination. In addition, use of the borate-polyol complexes avoids the incompatibility problem typically associated with the combination of borate buffer and polyvinyl alcohol; therefore, the compositions disclosed herein may also contain polyvinyl alcohol.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 1994Date of Patent: April 9, 1996Assignee: Alcon Laboratories, Inc.Inventor: Masood Chowhan
