  • Patent number: 4362491
Abstract: A tablet making machine includes a rotor, one end, preferably the lower end, of which is detachably secured to a rotatable member of the machine so that the rotor rotates with the rotatable member in use of the machine; the configuration of the rotor being such that when it is detached from the rotatable member the rotor can be removed from the machine by generally horizontal sliding movement. The rotor may thus be easily and quickly removed from the machine by detaching the rotor from the rotatable member and sliding the rotor horizontally from the machine, thus significantly reducing the time taken to clean the machine between batches of tablets may be reduced and enabling ready replacement of punches and/or dies that are damaged or worn. Further, an alternative rotor with different punches can be substituted very quickly. In this way, machine downtime may be significantly reduced.

  • Patent number: 4347051
Abstract: A unitary punch and die assembly for tooling a powder material compacting apparatus, or press, the assembly comprising a die plate mounted in the press table, which removably holds a die bushing clamped in position by a retainer collet provided with a peripheral thread and an internal thread. The retainer collet has an internal shoulder engaging a shoulder at the base of the die bushing, and a clamping ring threads on the internal thread of the collet for holding the die bushing in position within the collet. The peripheral thread of the collet engages the corresponding internal thread of a die spacer on which the die plate is mounted. By means of the retainer collet and the clamping ring, the die bushing surface may be adjusted flush with the surface of the die plate, without requiring grinding or lapping of the die bushing after assembly of the die bushing in the die plate.

  • Patent number: 4330247
Abstract: The invention provides an apparatus for forming moulded articles such as removable insoles for shoes. A blank is placed between a rigid plate corresponding to the peripheral base contour of the finished article on one side thereof and a mould bed corresponding to the shape of the article on the other side thereof. Peripheral areas of the blank are exposed by the plate and a flexible diaphragm is applied over the plate under pressure or with the aid of a vacuum after heating the blank to the softening point, to define said peripheral base contour, and to conform the other side and the exposed areas of the blank to the shape of the mould bed. In the case of shoe insoles, a range of sizes can be made with the same mould bed, using only different sizes of plate.

  • Patent number: 4304751
Abstract: A discrete thermoplastic composition is formed into a shaped article in a rapid stamping process. The composition is placed on and preheated with a rigid metal plate which has been preshaped to fit the contour of one of the dies of the stamping press. The heated composition and metal plate are then transferred to the stamping press where the composition is stamped and cooled into a three-dimensional shaped object. The surface of the metal plate contacting the composition has a special finish so that desired surface effects can be produced on the stamped article.

  • Patent number: 4273738
Abstract: Three-dimensional work pieces, such as instrument panels or dashboards, are made of initially flat stock or of synthetic material such as a two-component foamable material. The tools of the present apparatus include upper and lower holding tools which are preferably simultaneously shaping tools, and cutting or trimming tools. The upper tools and the cutting or trimming tools may have a common support which is preferably exchangeably secured in a main frame. The shaping tools are moved into a first cooperating position relative to each other, whereby the work piece is formed into the desired shape. The shaping tools may then be locked in the shaping position or they may be moved into a second cooperating position to be rigidly locked in the second position. A tool support such as a table carried by a scissors lift frame is used for moving the shaping tools into the desired positions. The cutting or trimming is then performed by applying pressure to the respective tools.

  • Patent number: 4247274
Abstract: A holding device for surface sheets or surface plates in a press intended, for example for pressing wood fiber products, include a press plate, a vacuum source for supplying vacuum to the side of a surface sheet or surface plate which faces toward the press plate, a vacuum distributing body placed between the press plate and the surface sheet, and a seal which is arranged to provide sealing between the present plate and the surface sheet. A substantially air-impervious sheet is disposed between the press plate and the surface sheet to form two essentially closed spaces coupled in air communication with the vacuum. This arrangement permits independent removal of the surface sheets from the press plates.

  • Patent number: 4244683
Abstract: There are disclosed an apparatus and a method for continuously embossing synthetic plastic sheet material with precisely formed embossments in patterns repeating along the length thereof. The apparatus includes a movable polished belt upon which the sheet material is carried, and a series of molds are placed on the sheet material. As the sheet material and molds are advanced in steps through the apparatus, presses clamp the molds and belt against opposite surfaces of the sheet material and raise the temperature of the assembly to embossing temperature for the resin to cause the resin to flow into the mold cavities, and volatiles at the interface are dissolved in the resin. After the embossing step, the clamping pressure is released and this permits limited shrinkage of the mold and sheet material.

  • Patent number: 4226578
Abstract: A cylindrical die for a pellet mill for animal feedstuffs is releasably clamped to a rotatable die holder by means of a series of clamping segments disposed in a recess at the end face of the die holder. The recess has a radially outer conically diverging surface which cooperates with conically shaped outer surfaces on the segments to produce clamping of the radially inner faces of the segments on an end portion of the die.The clamping segments are urged into engagement by springs acting on rods connected to the segments and are disengagable by means of a series of hydraulic rams which can be actuated to oppose the force of the springs. The direction of the forces is chosen to be at an angle to the axis of the die holder so as to cause the clamping segments to follow the surface of the recess and to move radially away from the die during disengagement. The angle chosen is preferably the angle of divergence of the recess. In a modification centering segments are interdigitated with the clamping segments.

  • Patent number: 4212609
Abstract: A method and machine for producing a configurated and specified weight food product in die cavities of a rotary die roll, each of the die cavities being defined by a configurated side wall and a porous bottom wall. During each revolution of the roll a batch of the product is forced into each cavity as the cavities pass beneath a hopper. Upon continued rotation of the roll, the bottom walls of the cavities are moved outwardly so as to force the configurated products from the die cavities. Tempered air at a controlled temperature and at a pressure above that of the atmosphere is directed through the porous bottom walls while the bottom wall is extended so that the configurated product is forced off of the wall and onto a conveyor located beneath the die roll. To facilitate cleaning of the porous dies, the die roll is so constructed that hot water may be directed through the air flow passage during cleaning and the porous bottom wall dies of the drum may be easily removed from the drum without drum disassembly.

  • Patent number: 4060359
Abstract: An isostatic press comprises a pressure vessel defined by a tubular jacket and by two end plugs. The jacket is, in the direction of its longitudinal axis, displaceble between two positions. The jacket surrounds a third plug centrally located between the two positions of the jacket so that, when the jacket is in one of its end positions, the central plug closes one end of the jacket, and vice versa. The two jacket positions alternatingly serve as pressing and charging positions so as to permit recharging of the press at one position simultaneously with carrying out a pressing operation at the other position. This arrangement approximately doubles the productivity of the press.

  • Patent number: 4028033
Abstract: This invention concerns an apparatus for embossing a plastic workpiece using vibratory energy. A workpiece to be embossed is brought into forced engagement with indicia carried by an embossing ring which is disposed at or in proximity to the antinodal region of longitudinal motion of a resonator.
