  • Patent number: 7048529
Abstract: The invention relates to a mold for the manufacture of curved insulating panels, which comprises an upper half-mold (2) and a lower half-mold (3) opposite each other. The structure of both said half-molds is formed by a respective chain of modular frames (5) hinged together and having a pyramidal or similar shape, which are connected at their tips by actuators. These actuators, when they are operated, vary their length and cause the frames to rotate with respect to each other, thereby curving the surface of the half-molds acting on the panels to be manufactured. In this way it is possible to produce panels with various radii of curvature using a single mold. The invention also includes a press for use with the abovementioned mold.

Abstract: A process for making molds for retroreflective sheeting and like articles includes making a substrate having a structured surface of geometric structures such as cube corner elements. The structured surface is in one embodiment partially replicated from a previous generation structured surface, and partially machined in the substrate. At least one of the faces of the structured surface is a compound face that has one machined portion and one non-machined portion, such as a replicated portion. The process can be used to manufacture substrates with desirable geometry cube corner elements, such as cube corner elements having a hexagonal outline in plan view, without requiring the use of pin bundling techniques or laminae. The process can also be used to manufacture articles having cube corner elements in which at least one face of the cube corner element has two constituent faces disposed on opposed sides of a transition line that is nonparallel to a nondihedral edge of such cube corner element.

Abstract: A mold base system for injection molding machines comprises two cast mold bases each with interior lugs. The lugs of each mold base removeably hold an insert. The inserts are machined to define a cavity that is the negative of the part to be molded. The inserts can be changed to suit different parts without changing the mold bases, which can stay on the injection molding machine indefinitely. Ribs connect the lugs to the mold base outside walls. Two ribs and an outside wall define a pocket that provides access to an insert. The ribs are notched to enable coolant lines to be routed without interference inside the mold base. The mold base system further comprises an ejector plate and a cap. The cap is changeable to suit different configurations of the ejector pins without changing the ejector plate.

Lubrication to the punch bars and guides in the turret is sealed off from the die table compartment. Further improvements pertain to the prior art difficulty with removal and replacement of dies, and removal of the die table. A hydraulic die removal assembly enables the operator to remove the dies, in situ, from the die table. Also, the improved apparatus enables the maintenance worker to pull out the part of the driving shaft that passes through the center of the turrets and die table, then pins are retracted, and with some related adjustments, that enables the die table to be removed from between the turrets. The procedure basically is reversed to re-install the die table.
