  • Patent number: 5049056
Abstract: A bushing used in an injection molding machine and positioned between the nozzle and the sprue thereof includes an adaptor body having a longitudinal axis, a first end and a second end. A first bore extends in the adaptor body parallel to the longitudinal axis from the second end to the first end for accommodating a flow of relatively viscous fluid such as a molten thermoplastic. A bridge extends transversely across the first bore between opposing walls of the bore adjacent the adaptor body first end. Fluid flow is allowed through the first bore around the bridge. A second bore extends from a surface of the adaptor body to a surface of the bridge for accommodating a flow of a relatively non-viscous fluid such as gas. The second bore terminates on the bridge surface so as to be substantially coaxial with the first bore.

  • Patent number: 4888110
Abstract: A filtering device for filtering a thermoplastic material by passing a continuous filter across a passage through which the material is caused to flow at an elevated temperature and pressure. The filter is passed through entry and exit ports flanking the passage. Seals on the filter cooperate in sealing engagement with the walls of the entry port to prevent the flowable thermoplastic material from escaping therethrough. The exit port is larger than the entry port, and is sealed off by a solidified plug of the thermoplastic material bonded to the filter. The pressure of the thermoplastic material in the filter passage forces the plug out of the exit port into contact with an external stop, with that portion of the plug in contact with the stop being selectively heated to accommodate controlled emergence of the plug and the filter bonded thereto.

  • Patent number: 4486304
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for continuously filtering a flow of melted plastic which includes a mechanism for purging the filter without interrupting continuous operation. A filter screen is disposed in a circular chamber within the filter housing. A collector plate including a plurality of radially oriented, triangularly shaped passages is disposed on the upstream side of the filter screen, defining triangular pockets for collecting contaminants that cannot pass through the filter screen. A collector head is rotatably disposed for selective registration with the collector pockets, and an indexing mechanism is included for sequentially stepping the collector head around the collector plate for momentary registration with each collector pocket. The collector head communicates with a contaminant discharge passage that is opened and closed in timed sequence with movement of the collector head.

  • Patent number: 4455761
Abstract: A water-wet polymer is extruded through a die plate. Free water formed by extruding action at the die plate is atomized and/or evaporated into an air stream. The die plate assembly discharges the rubber/moisture into a closely adjacent cone/funnel-receiver openly surrounding the die plate, and connecting to and discharging into a lesser diameter conveying tube. The die plate and surrounding funnel are enclosed by a chamber so that air, input tangentially into the enclosure, provides a swirling vortex air flow at the die plate assisting in severing and stripping rubber particles from the die plate.

  • Patent number: 4453905
Abstract: Plastics recycling apparatus in which an elongated tubular body has a core member therein and in which the core member has leading and trailing conical heads for directing the flow of molten material through the elongated tubular body. Inner and outer annular chambers are provided for the flow of material through a wall between the chambers while the material is being heated by energized coils about one of the chambers. The material flows to the discharge under pressure and passes through discharge orifices to form plastic ribbons which are cooled and then cut into pellets for reuse.

  • Patent number: 4410477
Abstract: A first continuously operating extruder for an extrudable material is fed with filtered such material from a second extruder through a filter and a storage tank having means for applying pressure to the material in the tank. During replacement of a filter, the second extruder is stopped, and the flow of material out of the continuously operating extruder is maintained constant by blocking the passageway between the second extruder and the tank and by applying suitable pressure to the material in the tank until the filter is removed and replaced by a new filter. The blocking device may be separate from a holder for a pair of filters, both the blocking device and the holder being movable by a fluid operable piston and cylinder. Alternatively, a separate blocking device may be omitted, and the filter holder may carry a single filter and have an impermeable portion which provides the blocking function.

  • Patent number: 4364888
Abstract: Elimination of shearing flow, having an inwardly radial flow and velocity gradient, of extrudable material entering a die for forming a honeycomb structure with a plurality of thin-walled cells, thereby avoiding irregularities in the extruded structure. The shearing flow, resulting from reducing cross-sectional area of a Bingham plastic material (e.g. a cordierite-forming, plastically moldable ceramic batch material) passing through a funnel section tapering inwardly from an extrusion barrel, is changed to plug flow by maintaining constant the reduced cross-sectional area through a straight-walled portion of an entrance cavity feeding the material to the die, which has passageways including a plurality of feed holes communicating with interconnected discharge slots sequentially in the extrusion detection for forming the honeycomb structure.

  • Patent number: 4361489
Abstract: A device for filtering a liquid, particularly molten polymer, removes incompletely molten polymer, foreign matter, aggregates of various additives and the like from the molten polymer prior to further processing of the liquid such as extrusion through a spinneret plate. The device comprises a housing provided with a liquid inlet and a liquid outlet and, positioned between the inlet and the outlet, a filter pack built up of a number of filtering disks and supporting disks. The disks are so arranged the liquid to be filtered is caused to flow between a center portion and an outer surface of the filter pack. On the filter pack there is placed a piston for applying a compressive pressure to the pack. The piston is displaced and acts to compress the filter pack on a liquid supply side under the influence of the pressure of the liquid to be filtered.
