Abstract: A dough sheet for producing thin, baked chips is obtained continuously by compressing a dough sheet to a thickness of less than or equal to about 0.035 inch between counter-rotating gauge rolls while maintaining the surface of each gauge roll at a temperature of about 85° F. to about 95° F. Maintaining the gauge roll surface temperature at about 85° F. to about 95° F. avoids sticking, tearing, and shredding of the thin dough sheet as it is compressed and transferred by the gauge rolls, even at high production rates or line speeds. A rotary cutter is employed to obtain thin, irregularly shaped, scallop-edged snacks in a variety of shapes from a single dough sheet without producing dough scraps between the pieces.

Abstract: A clay column slug is efficiently and accurately notched around its entire circumference before being cut into individual bricks. The slug is pushed into a roller assembly having two opposing upper parallel rows of rollers and two lower parallel rows of corresponding rollers to form notches in upper and lower surfaces of the slug. The upper and lower rows of rollers are compressed vertically together to form partial notches in front and rear surfaces of the slug. The slug is elevated up and out of the compressed roller assembly between the two opposing upper rows of rollers which completes the notches in the front and rear slug surfaces. After notching, the slug is further elevated through a set of parallel wires aligned with and positioned directly above the upper rows of rollers. Alignment with corresponding rollers insures the wires cut the clay slug through the slug notches. Apparatus for producing microbubbled and/or microapertured webs either in "planar" or "macroscopically expanded" form are also disclosed.

Abstract: A brick setting machine is disclosed which is operable to face set, stack without inverting or flat set. The machine is also operable to laterally space each brick from the next adjacent brick so that the faces and edges of the brick can be separately textured. The stacking, face setting and flat setting of the brick is performed by a plurality of elongated trays or turners which are operable to simultaneously rotate substantial numbers of brick through 90.degree. so that they rest on their sides and then when stacking or face setting is required to rotate adjacent rows of brick through an additional 90.degree. to form pairs of vertically aligned brick one resting on the other. The stacking is provided without gripping the brick so as to avoid damage to the brick.

Abstract: In the production of ceramic plates, the wet uncured extruded clay substrate is cut into plate shaped pieces by vertically reciprocating punching knives disposed about at least a portion of a plate shaped area. A pressure plate is mounted within the punching knives and vertically movable against spring forces therewithin so as to maintain downward pressure against the substrate material during the plate cutting operation. Chamfered plate edges are formed by special chamfering knives adjustably mounted at the edge of the pressure plate. The chamfering knives depend from the pressure plate and extend outwardly into contact with and inside wall surface of the punching knives so as to avoid undesirable burrs at the plate edge and also to permit convenient adjustment of the chamfering knives to compensate for wear.

  • Patent number: 4655981
Abstract: In order to produce a decorative pattern on the surface of a layer of material in a soft plastic condition, the surface is whipped by the free end portions of a plurality of flexible thread-like members. The whipping action provides random depressions in the surface. The thread-like members are preferably fastened to the peripheral surface of a rotatable body which is spaced from the surface to be treated at a distance which is substantially smaller than the length of the thread-like members, and the surface to be treated is moved in relation to the rotatable body while this body is rotated. By this whipping action it is possible to make surface patterns imitating a slaty surface or the surface of other natural materials. Such decorative surfaces may be made on layers of materials which are cut into plates or blocks for use as building materials after firing, setting or hardening of the material. As an example, the decorative pattern or structure may be made on plates to be used as roofing plates.

Abstract: A texturing system for brick fabrication comprising a plurality of slapping members mounted to at least one transmission belt for engaging individual edges of bricks within an array of bricks. The bricks are positioned beneath the slapping members while in a deformable state. An array of staggered lifting plates are positioned beneath the bricks for exposing opposite edge portions thereof to the slapping elements. The transmission belt is driven transversely to the movement of the bricks array for imparting the texturing force of the slapping elements to the underlying bricks along upstanding edge portions thereof. A series of three transmission belts are preferably used above a staggered pattern of two plate rows for treating the longitudinal sides of all bricks within an array. In this manner, an improved rough, used brick appearance may be imparted to individual brick elements while disposed in a common fabrication array.

The pastry tool includes a frame having an edge for cutting the dough, the cutting edge being formed in the shape of the peripheral outline of a pair of circles intersecting at two points. The two points of intersection define a line along which the dough, cut out by the tool, may be folded. • Patent number: 4495132
Abstract: An apparatus for treating the edges of pre-fired brick includes an extruder for extruding a column of clay and a wire cutter assembly for severing the column into individual bricks having their longitudinal axes substantially perpendicular to the direction of extrusion. The bricks are transported to a first conveyor where they are turned and directed to a side conveyor. As the pre-fired bricks move on the side conveyor, they move in a single file arrangement with their longitudinal axes substantially parallel to the direction of movement. The upper longitudinal edges of the pre-fired brick are treated by engagement with a pair of canted rollers to give the edges of the brick an irregular appearance. The bricks are then reoriented by a pair of rotating tables which direct the bricks onto a third conveyor with the axes of the brick being substantially perpendicular to their direction of travel.

Abstract: In apparatus for making transverse-flow cigarette filters, a rod of cellulose acetate impregnated with a plasticizing agent and having a porous covering is cut into sections each having a length of several filters. The rod sections are then transferred into longitudinal grooves in the periphery of a second revolving drum having in such grooves projections for forming indentations in one side of the rod sections. While carried by the second revolving drum, the rod sections are engaged by a third revolving drum having on its periphery projections for forming longitudinally offset indentations in the opposite side of the rod sections.
