  • Patent number: 4856974
Abstract: A die assembly for plastic pelletizing apparatus of the type including a cooling bath into which the plastic is extruded. The die assembly includes a heated main body having first and second oppositely disposed exterior faces connected by a plurality of relatively small extrusion passageways. A layer of thermal insulation material overlies the second face, and a cover member having an outer surface adapted to be exposed to the cooling bath is positioned over the thermal insulation material and joined to the main body. Wear resistant insert members formed from a material having a higher coefficient of thermal conductivity than the material from which the cover member is made extend from the outer surface of the cover member through the layer of insulation into the main body. Extrusion outlet orifices are formed through the insert members and define continuations of the extrusion passageways of the main body.

  • Patent number: 4850845
Abstract: An apparatus for depositing a viscous food mix onto a conveyor which carries the deposits of the food mix through an oven. The apparatus includes a hopper into which the food mix is loaded and an array of dies at the underside of the hopper. Counter-rotating rollers are located within the hopper and they are driven at periodic intervals to force a predetermined quantity of the food mix to be extruded downwardly through the dies at the periodic intervals. A shearing mechanism, which includes two reciprocating blades which are mounted in overlapping relationship, is located at the underside of each die for severing the extruded mix from that remaining in the die. The two blades associated with each die are formed with apertures, the blades being driven in such a manner that the apertures align when the blades are located in a first position and move out of alignment when the blades are driven to move into a second position.

Perforations are provided in the shroud members and backplate to permit passage of water to cool and flush away the cut pellets. Additionally, integrally formed blades may be arranged in concentric circles inwardly of the periphery of the backplate. The integral of the disc cutters avoids weakening and misalignment of the blades, saves space and permits a greater number of cutting edges than is possible in disc cutters wherein the blades are fastened to a hole by bolts. Casting the cutter integrally with its blades permits off-line grinding for final alignment purposes.

  • Patent number: 4470942
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and an equipment to obtain a plate provided with holes directly by extruding plastic materials. The process consists in submitting the material coming out of an extruder head to expansion stresses according to more than one direction and in executing a plurality of perforations in said material submitted to expansion by means of perforating means; the equipment consists of a plurality of perforating devices provided with a reciprocating motion so that they can reach an interference position with respect to the material coming out of the extruder head and of means which, acting at the same time as the perforating devices, are suitable to produce an expansion of the extruded material.

  • Patent number: 4462470
Abstract: The fluid loss and viscosity loss characteristics of a water expandable bentonite clay are substantially improved by extruding the clay through die openings while, at the same time, passing a wiper or scraping blade across the entrance of the die openings. In this manner, very inexpensive and low grade clays can be substantially improved and thus modified making such clays acceptable in fluid loss and viscosity for use in a drilling fluid or mud.

  • Patent number: 4440704
Abstract: A plastified mass of thermoplastic material containing an expanding agent is extruded and sliced into pieces by shaped cutting edges to produce--on expanding--elements which are shaped in a billowed manner or a double-bubble manner. The billowed elements have an inturned peripheral edge which prevents nesting and interlocking together when used in a shipping container. Similarly, the double bubble elements preclude nesting and interlocking.

  • Patent number: 4422372
Abstract: A food extruder wherein an extruder plate has perforations between its inside and outside surfaces and is sandwiched between a food chamber and a fluid housing is disclosed. Food enters the chamber and is passed through the perforations in the extruder plate. A rotary knife within the fluid housing cuts the food into portions of preselected size immediately upon their extrusion. A second rotary knife contained within the food housing clears any food blockage occurring in the vicinity of the interior surface of the extruder plate. Fluid is directed through the fluid housing past the exterior surface of the extruder plate for the purpose conveying food portions thus formed to the next stage in processing in a manner which prevents food portions from adhering either to one another or to elements of the food portion maker.

Abstract: Apparatus is provided for the recovery of dry polymer in porous crumb form in which pellets of polymer containing volatile material from a cutter located at the output end of an extrusion device are conveyed by a first gas stream from the cutter through a first pipe means to a cyclone separator. A second pipe means is supplied with and conveys a second gas stream to the cyclone separator, both the first and second pipe means terminating at and forming an entry to the cyclone separator in which the pellets are cooled and separated from the gas streams and volatile material. The pellets are then removed from the cyclone separator and conveyed to weighing and packaging means.

  • Patent number: 4410306
Abstract: A granulation apparatus in which a conical chamber having a downwardly and outwardly inclined wall is provided for collecting cut granules. The wall is covered with a flowing, circulating film of water, such film being of uniform thickness and circulating quickly. An annular water channel is provided around the cylindrical or conical chamber for collecting the granules, the annular channel being fed through a tangential water inlet. A flat, annular horizontal acceleration chamber is disposed in the upper region of the annular channel and communicates with the channel through an annular aperture formed in the upper radially outward region of the annular channel. At its radially inner periphery the acceleration chamber communicates with the chamber through an annular aperture. The disposition of the inlet, the channel and the acceleration chamber cause water flowing into the chamber to be subjected to centrifugal force whereby the film of water remains closely adjacent the wall and is of uniform thickness.
