Patent number: 6306326Abstract: An extruder according to the invention comprises at least two annular conical feed gaps (9) one within the other, formed between a rotatable rotor (1) and a stator (4, 5). At lest some of the material to be extruded is subjected in the different feed gaps (9) of the extruder alternately to a higher pressure and then to a lower pressure. The rotor (1) or stator (4, 5) between the feed gaps (9) can then be balanced such that the pressure effect provides a hydrodynamic bearing, whereby, when the extruder is used, even at worst a very small force is exerted on the other bearings of the rotor (1) or stator (4, 5). By the method of the invention, a product can also be produced which contains cross-linked and at least partly oriented polyethylene.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 2000Date of Patent: October 23, 2001Assignee: Uponor Innovation ABInventors: Kari Kirjavainen, Jyri Järvenkylä

Publication number: 20010012527Abstract: Two rows of nozzles 4a and 4b whose open ends are formed as orifices 2 of a die are respectively made to communicate with introducing slots 3 of orifice units 6, and jackets 7 for temperature regulation are each disposed between the orifice units 6. First nozzle portions 41a and 41b of a small diameter are provided in the nozzles 4a and 4b for the purpose of reducing a dead space where the orifices 2 cannot be disposed due to the jackets 7, and the jackets 7 are disposed at their depthwise position. The first nozzle portions 41a and 41b are disposed eccentrically in mutually opposite directions with respect to second nozzle portions 42a and 42b having the same diameter as the orifice 2, thereby making it possible to substantially reduce the dead space.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 11, 2001Publication date: August 9, 2001Inventor: Yasuhiko Ishida

Patent number: 6267915Abstract: The present invention is a continuous process of producing an object with radially-varying material properties. These objects can be cylindrical forms made from polymeric materials. This process requires a novel device. The device can be used to produce high bandwidth gradient-index plastic optical fiber (GRIN-POF). This fiber is highly advantageous for use in high speed local area networks (LANs) as well as other short-range optical communication applications. The device can also be used to produce GRIN lenses which can be used in the focusing and transmission of images.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1997Date of Patent: July 31, 2001Assignee: University of FloridaInventors: Chang-Won Park, James K. Patent number: 6248277Abstract: Method and apparatus for the continuous extrusion of rods of plastic raw material. The rods contain at least one inner channel which is at least in part spiral-shaped. The raw material may be a powder-metallurgical or ceramic mass. The material is extruded through a nozzle mouthpiece and made to rotate by an arrangement of flow guiding surfaces. At least one thread made of a flexible or elastic material is entrained and gives the rod a spiral shape with a predetermined pitch. The thread is retained upstream of the nozzle mouthpiece in an eccentric position relative to the rod axis that extends through the nozzle mouthpiece. The movement of rotation of the raw material is adjusted by an outer adjusting force which modifies the angle between the arrangement of flow guiding surfaces and the longitudinal axis of the nozzle mouthpiece to adjust the position and pitch of the spiral channel.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 1999Date of Patent: June 19, 2001Assignee: Konrad Friedrichs KGInventor: Konrad Friedrichs
