Abstract: Apparatus for molding plastic caps having inclined tabs integral with the lower edge of the cap skirt and radially inwardly extending ribs integral with the inner surface of the cap skirt. The tabs and ribs are formed by a plurality of blades having recesses on the ends thereof corresponding to the configurations of the tabs and ribs. The blades are mounted on a core and extend into a female mold having a cup-shaped cavity. A linear drive member is mounted on a fixed plate assembly and connected to a ratchet sleeve rotatably mounted on a movable plate assembly. The end of the ratchet sleeve is provided with circumferentially spaced teeth engaging the lower peripheral edge of the cap skirt. Movement of the movable plate assembly relative to the fixed plate assembly causes the ratchet sleeve to rotate to move the molded tabs and ribs away from the recesses of the blades so that the finished cap can be stripped from the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 6416315
Abstract: A plastic injection mold is disclosed which is particularly suitable for molding plastic objects such as containers. The mold has a core assembly and a mating cavity assembly which define the shape of the object to be molded therein. Movable collets are located in the mold to define the shape of a portion of the object, such as a peripheral flange or rim. The collets are slidably guided by cam pins, so that upon opening of the mold, the collets can be lifted by actuators to separate and release the molded object. A collet lifting ring is located between the collets and the actuators to ensure that all of the collets separate simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 6416312
Abstract: A compression molding apparatus includes a female mold half which receives a charge of molten plastic and a cooperating male plunger which compression molds the molten plastic into an article within the female mold half. A slide mold part is located between the male plunger and the female mold half. The slide mold part includes left and right slide mold halves which when brought into juxtaposition, define a central mold space. The left and right mold halves are slidable toward and away from each other, to form the central mold space and to open the central mold space respectively. The male portion is reciprocated downwardly to undertake the compression molding, and a cam mechanism is activated by the reciprocation to close the slide mold part during compression molding. The return stroke opens the slide mold part to allow removal of the molded article without stripping or unscrewing the molded article from the slide mold part.

  • Publication number: 20020076466
Abstract: A sequential mold lifter for a molded part forming device comprises at least first, second and third lifter segments that slidably engage one another. The first and third lifter sections are positioned on opposite sides of the second section and slide upwardly and inwardly on inclined lifter surfaces on the second lifter section. Separate actuators extend all of the lifter sections to a first extended position and then extend the first and third actuators upwardly and inwardly beyond the second actuator to a second extended position. The relative movement of the lifter sections dislodges the molded product from the mold and then dislodges the product from the lifter. The inclination of the actuators can vary with the positions of the lifter sections. Movable slides support the actuators but permit variation in the inclination of the actuators.

  • Patent number: 6390800
Abstract: An apparatus for forming threaded molded parts such as closures for containers having improved means for unthreading the formed part from the mold core. The apparatus includes a cavity part and a core part, the cavity part being rotatable relative to the core part, such that simultaneous rotation of the cavity and opening of the mold results in unthreading of the part from the core. The mold cavity is rotationally coupled to a mold cavity rotator which is preferably driven by means of a rack. The rotation of the mold cavity is timed with the mold opening step such that the threaded part is unthreaded from the core as the mold plates are separated.

  • Patent number: 6386859
Abstract: A mold-clamping unit accommodates an injection mold. The mold clamping unit includes a mold clamping chamber and a clamping mechanism. A crank element with a crank guide defines a guide path curved away from the clamping axis and has a longitudinal extension substantially parallel to the clamping axis. A drive unit moves the extractor along the crank guide and has a driving movement substantially parallel to the clamping axis. A guide unit is connected to the drive unit and the extractor and is guided at two locations on the crank guide. The first end of the drive unit is pivotably attached to the crank element and the second end of the drive unit is attached with hinges to the guide unit. The driving movement moves the guide unit along the guide path for moving the extraction mechanism in and out of the injection mold.

Abstract: Articles, such as components of an injection-molded multi-component product, are repositioned within a space, such as the space between mold parts, that is accessible for repositioning only during a series of periods, such as open-mold periods, that are separated by intervals of less accessibility for repositioning, such as closed-mold intervals by (a) moving a first article, such as a first component of a first multi-component product, from a first position within the space to outside of the space during a first such period; and (b) moving a second identical article, such as a first component of a second multi-component, from outside of the space to a second position within the space during the first such period. Both the movement of the first article and the movement of the second article are by means of a common vehicle, such as a common robot arm.

  • Publication number: 20020020942
Abstract: A pair of form keys and a method for forming reverse drafts in foam parts are disclosed. A male form key is reciprocally mounted in a first mold half in a retracted position. A female form key is rotatably mounted in a second mold half in a neutral position. The first mold half includes a first drive pin that when engaged, moves the male form key into engagement with a foam sheet to form an undercut as the first and second mold halves are closed. The first mold half also includes a second drive pin that engages the female form key as the first and second mold halves close rotating the female form key into engagement with the foam sheet and the male form key. After closure of the mold and the product is formed, the mold is opened. As this occurs, the drive pins are disengaged and the male form key retracts and the female form key rotates to their neutral positions. The formed product may then be stripped from the mold while maintaining the reverse draft or undercut.

Abstract: A mold assembly for a container closure includes a mold portion with a stripper ring adapted for engaging a shoulder of the closure, and a threaded core having an external, asymmetrical helical thread defining an internal, asymmetrical helical thread of the closure. The external, asymmetrical helical thread has a ramped surface defining a ramped surface of the internal, asymmetrical helical thread. Relative linear movement between the stripper ring and the threaded core causes withdrawal of the threaded core from the closure in a linear direction. The ramped surfaces of the internal and external, asymmetrical helical threads cooperate to facilitate the withdrawal.
