  • Patent number: 5091124
Abstract: A high tonnage reaction injection molding (RIM) press has fixed and movable platens for clamping a composite mold therebetween at a closed mold position. A plurality of high pressure hydraulic cylinders are mounted on a carrier for the movable platen, and a locking mechanism having a plurality of incrementally spaced locking positions is effective to lock the carrier selectively at said positions. A pair of low power hydraulic piston-cylinder assemblies connected with the carrier adjacent to its opposite ends move the carrier and movable platen to the closed position. Short stroke connecting rods operated by the high pressure cylinders are forced independently of each other into high tonnage engagement with the movable platen at a plurality of locations within the area of the composite mold to clamp the latter between the platens and positively seal its junctions, whereupon a RIM mix head injects the high pressure reactive chemicals into the sealed mold.

  • Patent number: 4573901
Abstract: A cast iron die carrier member for the die closing unit of an injection molding machine having a machined die mounting face which is interrupted by a pattern of shallow face grooves on the surface of which the casting skin of higher resistance and lower elongation is retained, in order to stiffen the die carrier member against bending and distortion under an elevated die closing pressure. The die carrier member also has axially extended, vertically braced supporting flanges reinforcing the cantilever-type clamping connection between the member and the guide rails of the machine base to further stiffen the die carrier member against bending and to thereby reduce the long-term wear of the guide surfaces of the die closing unit.

  • Patent number: 4565516
Abstract: This relates to a blow mold of a large capacity which is particularly configurated to replace two adjacent blow molds in a blow molding machine of the Ferris wheel type. The blow mold includes an inner mold half which will bridge the supports for two existing smaller molds and an outer mold half which is formed in two segments with each of the segments being independently mounted on the supports for two separate prior radially outer blow mold halves. Thus, an existing machine may be readily converted to make much larger blow molded articles then those for which it was originally intended. This abstract forms no part of the specification of this application and is not to be construed as limiting the claims of this application.

  • Patent number: 4548573
Abstract: Frozen confection articles are produced in non-enveloped, openable moulds by subjecting the closed moulds to an innoxious freezing medium such as very cold air. An apparatus for producing such frozen or moulded articles comprises a plurality of parallel, endless rows of moulds moving along a closed path of straightlined and curved configurations, these moulds each consisting of opposed, mutually hinged mould parts, which are forced together during motion along the straightlined parts of said path, as corresponding to setting or freezing zones, while the moulds are openable for discharging of the hardened or frozen products as they are guided along the curved path, in which the moulds diverge from each other and thus provide space for the opening thereof.

  • Patent number: 4530655
Abstract: A mounting arrangement for a die closing unit on the machine base of an injection molding machine, where the machine base has two guide rails with parallel horizontal and vertical guide faces welded to the upper edges of its U-shaped base member, the stationary die carrier plate and the stationary cylinder head plate of the die closing unit being positioned and positively centered by the guide faces of the guide rails, and the movable die carrier frame being adjustably guided on the same guide faces. The cylinder head plate is free to execute small displacements along the guide rails, in compensation for the periodic elongation of the tie rods, when the closing pressure is applied to the injection molding die.

  • Patent number: 4487569
Abstract: An injection molding machine with a mechanism for pivotably repositioning the die closing unit between a horizontal orientation and a vertical orientation, featuring a pivot frame composed of tubular members to which the die closing unit is fixedly attached and two transversely aligned stationary pivot bearings on the machine base, in relation to which the pivot frame is axially adjustable by means of two threaded spindles. The pivotal repositioning is obtained by means of a worm gear drive on one of the pivot shafts, and both pivot shafts cooperate with threaded clamping plugs which press the pivot frame members against the pivot bearings to transfer the pivot connections into rigid mounting attachments on the machine base.

  • Patent number: 4480976
Abstract: Disclosed is an adjustable sliding mold assembled of two angular mold pieces slidably engaging each other at two mating surfaces. Adjusting means, preferably in the form of a spindle, is hinged to an outer side of a mold part to move the same transversely to the extrusion channel. The movable mold part is formed with an arcuate guide surface extending transversely to the extrusion channel and cooperating with a stationary complementary bearing surface so that during adjustment of the width of the extrusion channel the guiding surface automatically adjusts the taper of the channel.

  • Patent number: 4468368
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for transferring blanks, plastic parisons or other articles to be molded in a sealed cavity. One embodiment includes mold sections which are closeable along a first axis to form a mold cavity and which are movable along a second axis from a first station where the mold sections may receive a moldable blank to a second station where the blank may be molded under pressure. Optional biasing means may be included to hold the mold sections sufficiently close together to hold the blank in the mold cavity as the mold sections move from the first station to the second station. A clamp, or other pressure applying means, exerts a final closing pressure on the mold sections at the second station for molding the blank under pressure. The clamp is stationary in relation to the first and second stations so that the mold sections can move relative to the clamp along the second axis.

  • Patent number: 4425091
Abstract: A molding machine for die casting, injection molding, and other similar processes, comprises a base shaped to support thereon a two-part die, and a ram for converging and diverging the die halves between open and closed positions. A pair of clamping frames are pivotally mounted on one end of the base, and include a closed border shaped to surround or receive therein side portions of the die halves. The clamping frames are laterally pivoted between a fanned-apart or open position wherein the die can be freely lifted off of the base, and a folded or closed position wherein the frame borders surround the die side portions and capture the same between the ends of the frames. In the closed position, retractable compression columns extend between the die and one end of the frames to positively lock the die halves in the closed position, whereby die separation forces developed during injection of the die are resisted substantially solely by the clamping frames.

  • Patent number: 4421472
Abstract: A blow molding machine is disclosed for hollow plastic articles. The machine includes a clamp mechanism for a pair of mold sections. It comprises a body disposed below an extruder at an extruding station and a blow pin at a blow station and carrying opposed platens for supporting the mold sections. Each of a pair of levers is pivotally coupled with a respective platen and with the body and the levers are connected together by a pull bar. An actuating means displaces one of the platens relative to the body and equal and opposite motion is transmitted through the levers and the pull bar to the other platen for opening and closing the clamp. A lifting mechanism supports the clamp for movement between the extruding station and the blow station. The lifting mechanism is adapted for vertical motion by a hydraulic motor acting on a lifting frame. The frame is mounted by pivot links on the machine base and pairs of links are connected by a shaft with a crank arm, the crank arms being connected together by a tie rod.

  • Patent number: 4316864
Abstract: Method for slip casting toilet bowls and as mould for casting ceramic material in slip form, including a compartment having an air impermeable wall and arranged, in the casting position of the mould, so that when the mould is filled with slip air is trapped in the compartment. The compartment is located at a region where casting is not to occur and the trapped air not only achieves this but also prevents the surface of the compartment from becoming wetted, thereby making subsequent cleaning easier. The compartment may be formed either in a plaster mould part and its surface rendered air impermeable, or in a separate part made of air impermeable material, and assembled with the plaster mould parts. The mould is particularly suitable for casting a water-closet bowl, the compartment being located at the region where the open top of the bowl is formed.
