  • Patent number: 7661949
Abstract: A device for creating curved sausage links involves extruding an elongated sausage strand having linear protein fibers therein out of an elongated hollow meat emulsion extrusion tube. The flow of meat emulsion through the tube is partially restricted by a restrictor element within the tube which permits a portion of the meat emulsion to pass thereover in a substantially uninterrupted manner, but which requires a separate layer of meat emulsion to have its movement through the tube inhibited by engaging the restrictor element and having to move thereover to exit the tube. When the sausage strand is subjected to heat, the uninterrupted portion is inclined to have more lengthwise shrinkage in the presence of heat than the other layer, thus causing the sausage link to assume a curved configuration. The device has a stuffing tube with the restrictor element therein as described heretofore.

  • Patent number: 7524448
Abstract: The invention discloses method and apparatus for providing a desired batch flow through desired regions of an extrusion die for forming honeycomb structures, and more particularly to the enhancement of batch flow in the skin-forming region of the die so as to provide a bounding wall of desired thickness and strength about a honeycomb core. Unlike prior methods, a recess or trough of desired depth and width is formed in a desired region of the inlet face of the honeycomb die, which reduces the pressure required to flow batch material through the die in such region. Such reduced pressure requirement translates in an increased flow rate in such region under constant extrusion pressure. Thus by increasing the flow rate through a honeycomb extrusion die in an outer peripheral region of flow in this manner, improved skin formation around a honeycomb core is obtained during the forming process.

  • Patent number: 7077642
Abstract: A plunger machine for molding reinforced polymer compositions is provided. The plunger machine has particular application in molding polymer that is reinforced with particles having an aspect ratio that is greater than 1:1. The plunger machine includes a barrel housing with a smooth walled barrel with longitudinal fins projecting inwardly towards the center of the bore that defines a main melt chamber. A plunger housing, having a plunger bore, defines an initial melt chamber and is in communication with the main melt chamber. A plunger resides in the plunger bore and is reciprocatable therein. The barrel bore is continuously inwardly tapered and cooperates with the longitudinal fins to provide a shortened melt period and a smooth transition and alignment of reinforcing members within the polymer mixture during the melt process.

  • Patent number: 6966765
Abstract: A rotating circular die for mounting on an extruder. The die incorporates an inner component comprising a cone with support independent of the outer component and extruder, thereby permitting forward and backward adjustment of the inner component in relation to the outer component during actual processing. Independent support for the inner cone eliminates the sanitary and microbial concerns that are present when die assemblies are housed within the extruder. The inner cone is self-centering to provide extrudate of uniform thickness and capable of imparting rotational shearing stresses on the extrudate to provide for starch alignment. The rotation of the inner component considered with the positional adjustability produces uniform extrudate as well as minimizes production downtime by reducing clogging and backup risks and providing for easy clean up.

  • Patent number: 6875004
Abstract: A method and apparatus for extruding unvulcanized rubber in a tire production process, in which an unvulcanized rubber extruded member can be formed by extrusion. An extruded rubber member having a cross section in which a portion of a second unvulcanized rubber intrudes between portions of a first unvulcanized rubber is formed by extrusion. The apparatus includes a first passage for the first unvulcanized rubber, a second passage for the second unvulcanized rubber, and a flow dividing mechanism where the first and second passages are adjacent or connected, which separates a portion of the first unvulcanized rubber passing through the first passage such that the first unvulcanized rubber is disposed at both sides of the intruded second unvulcanized rubber. In the method, the first unvulcanized rubber is divided into two flows, and a portion of the second unvulcanized rubber is caused to intrude therebetween.
