  • Patent number: 4540544
Abstract: A method for producing a container from a tubular blank of polyethylene terephthalate or similar material, according to which a polyethylene terephthalate blank is stretched at least approximately 3-fold to produce a preform (20). In an axial section through the preform, the contour length substantially corresponds to the contour length in an axial section through the final container. The preform (20) is heated to a temperature above the glass transition temperature (TG) and is converted to the container (21) in a blow mold (12). In doing so, the contour length of the material is maintained through successive reduction of the axial length of the body (23) which the preform constitutes during the conversion to the container. In order to achieve this, the base portion of the blow mold (11) is moved towards the orifice (22) of the final container.

  • Patent number: 4518340
Abstract: Apparatus for producing a tubular premoulding of a thermoplastic material, suitable for subsequent shaping to form containers by a rolling process. The material in a part of a tube is axially oriented as a result of reducing the wall thickness by applying an external pressure which causes the material to flow. The oriented material is moulded by a blow-moulding process into future mouth parts and parts of adjacent neck sections, preferably from two blank parts, joined to one another, of pre-mouldings, the blank parts in the transition between the two mouth parts being severed in order to form two separate blank parts, so that, after closing one end and, if necessary, reworking in order to obtain the requisite closing faces at the other end, the two blank parts each form a tubular pre-moulding.

  • Patent number: 4505664
Abstract: A machine particularly useful for the blow molding of large thermoplastic articles such as cylindrical drums comprises a plurality of stations through which mold cavities are successively advanced. At a first station, containing a cart-mounted blow assembly an article is blow molded to substantially its final form in a cavity with the blow medium being introduced via a blow pin assembly operatively associated with the cavity after the blow assembly has been operatively engaged with the blow pin assembly. After the blowing operation has been completed, the blow assembly is operatively disengaged from the blow pin assembly and the cavity with the blown article is transported in a second station, the blow pin assembly traveling with the cavity. • Patent number: 4493633
Abstract: Apparatus for moulding an article (11) of thermoplastic material from a parison (10) in which certain parts (17,16) of the parison are re-formed while other parts (13,12,20) retain their shape. A difference in pressure is applied to the wall of the parison during the re-forming process. Material in the parison is also moved in the direction of those parts of the parison which are to be re-formed, whereby attenuation of the material may be avoided entirely, if so desired, also in those parts which are to be re-formed. The invention enables the parison for a bottle to be re-formed to an extent which is small by comparison with the thickness of the material, for example the so-called "neck support" ring and the so-called "pilfer proof" ring, starting with a tube of oriented material. In a device for the application of the invention the elements (22,21,25) are in contact with the parts (13,12,20) of the parison.

  • Patent number: 4479772
Abstract: The number of blow mold stations being associated with a blow wheel of a blow molding machine determines a large pitch of the mandrel receiving positions of the blow wheel. Contrarily the mandrels carrying the parisons are disposed very close to each other on the heating wheel which thus has a substantially smaller pitch. The larger pitch of the blow wheel shall be maintained throughout the complete machine to simplify the transfer of the parison. Accordingly the heating wheel receives the same pitch as the blow wheel including additional mandrel receiving positions which are served in a plurality of subsequent revolutions of the heating wheel.

Abstract: A technique is described for preparing molecular biaxially oriented hollow articles from thermoplastic materials. The invention involves forming a parison on a cooled core rod by injecting a hot thermoplastic material into a cavity formed by the core rod and a cooled injection mold, cooling the parison with low temperature coolant to a temperature within the orientation range of the thermoplastic material, transferring the parison to a stretch blow molding position and permitting the temperature of the parison to equilibrate itself. • Patent number: 4372910
Abstract: A method and apparatus of making hollow plastic articles are disclosed in which the preforms or other articles are sequentially molded from a continuous stream of plasticized resin supplied by an extruder. The preforms are formed sequentially in a plurality of molds and immediately transferred from the molds to blowing apparatus where they are blown into plastic articles. The molds are disposed in sets of two or more molds each, and the number of blowing apparatus units is equal to the number of sets of molds, with at least two sets of molds being provided. After the preform is formed in one mold of a set of molds, it is transferred while it is still hot to the corresponding blowing apparatus for that set while the extruded stream of plasticized resin is fed into the other molds to form other preforms.

  • Patent number: 4363619
Abstract: A method and apparatus for blow molding a wide mouth container wherein substantially the entire container is multiaxially oriented in its formation. The method and apparatus produce this container in effectively a one station operation without the need for high pressure injection molding platens. The apparatus is useful in making non-oriented articles as well. One such multiaxially oriented article that may be blow molded is a container having the configuration of an oil can.

  • Patent number: 4362498
Abstract: This relates to a blow molding system wherein a plurality of preforms are simultaneously blow molded within a mold set with the preforms being carried by one or more carriers which move first to a loading station to receive preforms, then through an oven to heat the preforms, then into a mold set wherein the plural preforms are simultaneously blow molded, then to an ejection station where the blow molded articles are discharged, and finally back to the loading station. There are two mold sets which are part of a clamp which operates sequentially to open and close each mold set with one mold set being closed as the other mold set is being opened. The carriers may travel either in a single continuous path for sequentially positioning at first one mold set and then the other, or there may be two continuous circuits for the carriers in which event the two mold sets of the clamp may be different.

  • Patent number: 4344749
Abstract: An injection stretch-blow molding apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus includes at least two preform conditioning stations, a molding injection station for initially molding the preform and a blow molding station. Each of the stations is preferably able to process an equal number of preforms at once. The apparatus also includes a turntable and preform supporting jaws connected to the turntable for transporting consecutive sets of preforms made at the injection station to the two conditioning stations alternately, and for transporting sets of preforms alternately from each of the conditioning stations to the blow molding station. This allows all four stations to operate at their respective full capacities, even though conditioning at the conditioning station requires up to twice as long as injection molding or stretch-blow molding.

  • Patent number: 4323340
Abstract: Disclosed are apparatus and a method for forming multi-directionally oriented plastic articles by shearing a thermoplastic material in a non-linear shear pattern while the material is at a temperature conducive to orientation and further processing the material by known plastic forming techniques to form an article in which the material remains oriented. More specifically, thermoplastic material is plasticized and accumulated in an amount at least sufficient to form the article, and the material is expressed under pressure from the accumulated body to and through an orifice. The material is non-linearly sheared prior to its issuance from the orifice to induce orientation stresses into the material, and, during shearing, the material is at a temperature which is conducive to orientation.
