    Abstract: In a method of injection molding elements, a first step is to charge a molding compound into an injection nozzle via a side hole defined in the nozzle under the control of a mini-plunger which is selectively reciprocally movable within a bore of the injection nozzle. In a second step, the mini-plunger is reciprocally moved in the bore of the nozzle for injecting substantially the entire molding compound in the bore of the injection nozzle into at least one cavity of a mold via a separate gate passage defined in the mold. Each gate passage is a narrow capillary aperture that connects the bore of the injection nozzle with a different one of the at least one cavity of the mold. In a third step, the nozzle and the mold are separated after the molding compound in the gate passage is cured but before the molding compound in the at least one cavity of the mold is cured. In a fourth step the molded element is removed from the at least one cavity of the mold once the molding compound therein is cured.

    Abstract: A technique including an apparatus for injection molding fiber-reinforced thermoset plastic articles is disclosed. The technique includes forming a mixture of short lengths of reinforcing fibers with a thermosetting resin in a predetermined fiber-to-resin ratio and introducing the mixture to an injection molding cylinder. The volume of mixture introduced is at least a multiple of two of the volume of the mold chamber so that the injection plunger traverses the intersection between the molding cylinder and a stuffer cylinder a single time for a multiplicity of molding shots to minimize fiber breakage and balling. The injection plunger is adapted to precompact the mixture by being forced forward until a predetermined high pressure is sensed, indicating a hydraulically locked condition of the plunger wherein substantially all entrapped gases have been expressed from the mixture and there exists no substantial forward movement of the plunger.

In accordance with one aspect of the invention, an existing injection molding machine is retrofitted with two cylinder and piston arrangements which are bolted onto the machine between its plasticizer barrel and its melt manifold. One of the cylinder and piston arrangements is employed to perform a mold-filling operation, whereas the other cylinder and piston arrangement is employed to perform packing and suck back operations.

Also provided is a piston means, such as a plunger, which has a stop valve mechanism that closes when it is moved in an injection direction and is opened when it is moved in a counterinjection direction and injects molten resin, fed to a portion in the vicinity of the forward end of the heating cylinder, into a cavity through the injection nozzle, whereby, through driving of the resin feed means and the piston means, charging of molten resin into the forward end of the heating cylinder and injection of the molten resin into a cavity are carried out partially concurrently.

The finished lens does not have the knit line normally associated with injection molded lenses.

    Abstract: A mixing valve is located at the opening of a mold cavity to control the flow of a fast setting mixture into the mold and to mix the ingredients forming the mixture immediately prior to dispensing into the mold. The valve includes a plurality of mixing elements on a mixing head which rotates about its own axis within the valve housing and which cooperates with the housing to define a mixing chamber receiving the ingredients. When the valve is open, the plurality of mixing elements supported from the head in the mixing chamber are rotated with the head to mix the ingredients into the fast setting mixture. The head also reciprocates along its axis to open and close the valve and completely fills the chamber to eject the mixed ingredients when the valve is closed.
