Abstract: An injection molding shutoff assembly that includes a chamber containing a movable body movable between rear and forward positions. In the rear position, the movable body provides a seal and prevents flow of molten plastic out the chamber inlet, called drool. When the movable body is in the forward position, one or more passages permit flow of the molten plastic around the movable body and to an exit in the chamber, leading to one or more molds. In an alternate embodiment, the apparatus also includes an elongate stem that maintains the movable body in the forward position allowing the injection molding system to decompress, thereby eliminating drool and decreasing downtime.

  • Patent number: 7021923
Abstract: An injection molding system for forming a molded plastic part including a die having a pair of die halves which mate along their joining surfaces to form a parting line and define a mold cavity, a plurality of ejection pins within at least one of the die halves and operable to move the finished molded part in a direction away from at least one of the die halves, a gate removably mounted to one of the die halves, and a runner. The gate includes an inlet and an outlet having an edge surface extending in a direction generally opposite to the movement of the molded part upon ejection from the mold cavity. Upon separation of the two die halves, the ejection pins are then further operable to remove excess cooled plastic material from the gate and the runner.

  • Patent number: 6910877
Abstract: According to the present invention a coding plate is interspersed between first and second respective inlet and outlet cross over nozzle parts. The cooling plate engages ends of the cross over nozzles during mould filling and provides a melt transfer passage therebetween. Once the mould is filled, the cooling plate acts to dissipate heat from the melt transfer passage thereby promoting solidification of melt therein. Accordingly melt solidification in the sprue is assured with more certainty than prior art designs enabling relatively fax mould cycling with minimal risk of drool.

  • Patent number: 6852264
Abstract: An improved injection molding runnerless manifold and nozzle system, method and apparatus in which the fluid plastic molding material transfer conduits, such as the manifold runner channels and cavity injection nozzle passageway, are constructed of a low thermal conductivity, non-metallic heat insulation structural material to thereby heat insulate the liquified molding material or resin, whether thermosetting or thermoplastic, while resident in the manifold runners and/or nozzle passageways. The heat transfer and other physical parameters of the conduit material and structure are such that this molding material remains at a reasonable uncured molding temperature while resident in the transfer conduit for the duration of at least one injection cycle due to the heat insulation characteristics of these fluid flow conduits of the system.

  • Patent number: 6824726
Abstract: A method of sandwich molding, in which a first thermoplastic material is injected into a mold cavity followed by the injection of a second thermoplastic material expanding within the first thermoplastic material, eliminates the need for heated runner systems communicating from the injection nozzle of the injection molding machine to the mold cavity by employing a cold runner having sufficiently slow solidification time to allow subsequent injections from two injection sources. The backflow into the inactive branch is prevented by maintaining the injection nozzle against the mold until molding is complete.

  • Patent number: 6726465
Abstract: A method and apparatus for synchronizing the flows of molten polymer or similar materials in molding systems which utilize manifolds to direct flow into one or more cavities of an injection mold. The apparatus utilizes intermeshing positive displacement, interconnected gearing systems similar to positive displacement gear pumps in hydraulic systems. These positive displacement gear mechanisms are placed in each parallel flow channel such that all flow in each channel passes through a gear mechanism. After a mold cavity is filled, the gear mechanisms can be utilized as melt pumps to continue packing or holding plastic in the mold cavity. By reversing the pump mechanisms, precise decompression of the flow channels to eliminate gate stringing and other adverse effects can be accomplished.
