  • Patent number: 5935481
Abstract: In order to prevent the formation of flash on a gasket used to seal a filter element when the filter element is mounted in a housing to filter a fluid, such as air for an internal combustion engine, a molding method and apparatus utilizes a pair of mold components which abut along a mold line and define a cavity for forming the gasket. As the expandable material expands to fill the cavity and form the gasket, a portion of the material adjacent the mold line is received in an annular groove in one of the mold components so that flash is not formed at the mold line. One of the mold components also has an upwardly sloping ramp surface so that air and gas move along the ramp surface as the material expands and does not become trapped in the cavity, thus avoiding defects and blemishes in the gasket due to trapped air bubbles.

Abstract: In an apparatus for molding resin to seal electronic parts, an internal die space defined at least by pots, cull portions, resin passages and cavities when an upper mold section and a lower mold section are closed, is cut off or sealed from the exterior atmosphere. Thereupon the die space is evacuated using a first evacuation by a vacuum source and a second or instantaneous evacuation by an instantaneous evacuation mechanism. The vacuum source for the first evacuation may be an active vacuum pump, while the instantaneous evacuation mechanism may be a vacuum tank that has been previously pumped down, for example. Using this apparatus, it is possible to quickly improve the degree of vacuum in the internal die space by efficiently and reliably discharging air, moisture and gas from the internal die space to the exterior due to a synergistic action of the evacuation and the instantaneous evacuation. • Patent number: 5741450
Abstract: A method of and apparatus for molding hollow items using the resin transfer molding technique in such a manner that the resin is more uniformly distributed about and along the molding region of the mold. This is accomplished by installing oppositely spaced grooves in the mold and injecting resin directly into these grooves. Upon such injection, the resin travels along and fills the groove (by taking the path of least resistance) before such resin is squeezed or forced out a minute gap that exists between the molding surfaces and into the molding region of the mold. As such resin is being forcibly injected into the cloths in the mold, a vent permits any air displaced from the cloths by the resin to be released. Such resin injection and mold venting occurs until such time that no more air is vented and instead 100% resin is being discharged from the mold. Upon this occurrence, further resin injection is curtailed and the resin previously injected is allowed to harden and cure.

Abstract: A high impact resistant rotationally molded door and process for molding the door is disclosed in which a hinge member is integrally molded to the door along one edge only. This hinge member forms to the hollow door edge without door warpage during curing and shrinking of rotationally molded plastic door body. Door warpage is avoided by delaying full integral attachment of the hinge member to the door until curing of the injected foam interior which both bonds to the interior of the door and the hinge member. An improved seal and hinge seal is disclosed together with a placed window construction that can include both placement and shaping to meet the special order needs. Further improvements including the expedient of venting a rotationally molded door during the rotational molding process through an integrally molded hinge edge reinforcing member. This same venting scheme is utilized for enabling improved cooling of the door once molding of the hollow door shell has occurred.

Abstract: On mating surfaces of a pair of mold members are formed a breathing groove communicating with a cavity, a detection chamber for detecting a melt pressure at an end of the breathing groove, a detour groove diverging from the detection chamber and a valve chamber communicating with a vent passage at an end of the detour groove. A valve element of a shut-off valve member is positioned in the valve chamber and retracts to a valve closing position when the shut-off valve member moves in a direction perpendicular to and separating from the mating surface. A detection pin having an end fronting toward the detection chamber and a operation pin having an end fronting toward the valve chamber and abutting against the valve element are connected through a reverse mechanism so that the pins move in opposite directions to each other.

Abstract: A molding method is used to mold a semiconductor device within a molded carrier ring. A mold tool (30) has an upper platen (32) and a lower platen (34). Each platen has a package cavity (36) and a carrier ring cavity (38). Between the package and ring cavities is a venting hole (60) having a venting pin (63) slidably fit therein. The venting pin includes a flat surface (64) that allows air which is forced from the package cavity during molding to escape through a narrow gap. The gap size is made small enough to prevent the passage of resin to flow through. Thus, the invention permits the mold tool to be compression cleaned and prevents mold tool down-time previously experienced when molding resin gets dogged in traditional venting holes. In another embodiment, the venting pin can be placed within the package cavity and also serve as an ejector pin.

Abstract: A process for the injection molding of objects having an outer layer of enamel and an inter layer of a plastic material is disclosed. According to the process, a liquid enamel is used. This enamel is injected by an enamel-injection apparatus through an enamel-injection die. A plastic melt passes through an injection unit into the cavity. According to the invention, the liquid enamel is injected into the flow path of the melt in the region before the cavity, before the melt is injected, so that the melt is encased by enamel before it is distributed in the cavity. Variations are also disclosed. For example, the form can be filled with enamel and the excess enamel drained. Then, the melted plastic material is introduced into the injection molding form. Also, the form can filled and then the capacity of the form increased to accommodate the melted plastic material. In any case, it is possible to use liquid enamels to enamel injection molded parts in the tool or form.

Abstract: A device for molding foam products including upper and lower portions cooperable to form a foam mold defining a mold cavity therein. The upper mold portion has at least one vent hole therein. A mechanism for providing the mold cavity with an expandable foam during a filling cycle is also provided. The expandable foam reactively expands when provided within the cavity so as to be molded into the shape of the cavity during a foaming cycle. The foam approaches the vent hole while expanding within the mold cavity during the foaming cycle. At least one vent hole provides a passage through which air and reaction product gases introduced into the cavity as a byproduct of the reactive expanding of the foam can escape to atmosphere from the cavity during the foaming cycle. A sensing and signal generating assembly detects the presence of the foam at a predetermined proximity to the at least one vent hole during the foaming cycle and generates a signal in response to the detection.
